Efficacy and Safety of Lidocaine Infusion Treatment for Neuropathic Pain: A Randomized, Double-Blind, and Placebo-Controlled Study
Conclusions Lidocaine infusion therapy (3 mg/kg of lidocaine administered over 1 hour) provided effective short-term pain relief, which was substantially prominent after repeated infusions were administered to patients with refractory NeP. Clinical Trial Registration This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT02597257.

Early Factors Associated with the Development of Chronic Pain in Trauma Patients.
Conclusions: We identified risk factors present on hospital admission that can predict trauma patients who will develop chronic pain. These factors should be prospectively validated. PMID: 29666666 [PubMed - in process]

Predictors of Long-Term Temporomandibular Disorder Pain Intensity: An 8-Year Cohort Study.
CONCLUSION: In participants with moderate to severe baseline TMD pain intensity, higher baseline physical HRQoL predicted lower TMD pain intensity at 8 years follow-up. PCS score could contribute to a multifactorial long-term TMD pain prediction model. PMID: 29694463 [PubMed - in process]

A Comparative Study between Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and Fentanyl to Relieve Shoulder Pain during Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery under Spinal Anesthesia: A Randomized Clinical Trail.
Conclusions: The findings indicated that TENS was not superior to fentanyl for pain relief in laparoscopic surgery. It seems that the correct use of TENS parameters might merit further investigation. This trial is registered with: IRCT2016031216765N3. PMID: 29743962 [PubMed - in process]

Changes in Pain Perception following Psychotherapy: The Mediating Role of Psychological Components.
Abstract Chronic pain is frequently associated with significant psychological issues, such as depression or anxiety. Psychological treatments, such as psychotherapy, can often alleviate both psychological and pain symptoms. However, there is limited research about the association between psychological symptoms and perceived pain in the context of psychotherapeutic interventions. We conducted a retrospective study that analyzed, in a hospital context, how changes in psychological functioning and well-being were associated with pain reduction. Thirty-seven records of patients with chronic pain attending psychotherap...

The Role of Nurses' Uncertainty in Decision-Making Process of Pain Management in People with Dementia.
Authors: Rababa M Abstract Pain in people with dementia (PWD) is underassessed and undertreated. Treatment of pain in people with dementia goes awry because of poor assessment, poor treatment, and factors related to nursing decision-making skills. Several theoretical models addressed the role of nurses' critical thinking and decision-making skills in pain treatment, like the cognitive continuum theory (CCT) and the adaptive pain management (APT). Only the Response to Certainty of Pain (RCP) model was the first model to posit relationships between nurses' uncertainty, pain assessment, and patient outcomes. Gilmore-B...

Characteristics of Glutamate-Evoked Pain in the Masseter Region: Differences Between Targeted Injections in Subcutaneous, Muscle, and Bone Tissues.
CONCLUSION: The subcutaneous injection was more painful and unpleasant than the intramuscular injection. The glutamate injection at the surface of the bone sensitized the deep pain tissues to pressure stimulation. Clinically, it may be difficult to differentiate between the source or site of pain originating from the masseter region, but the specific quality and word descriptors could assist in differential diagnosis.
