Children's Behavioral Pain Cues: Implicit Automaticity and Control Dimensions in Observational Measures.
Abstract Some pain behaviors appear to be automatic, reflexive manifestations of pain, whereas others present as voluntarily controlled. This project examined whether this distinction would characterize pain cues used in observational pain measures for children aged 4-12. To develop a comprehensive list of cues, a systematic literature search of studies describing development of children's observational pain assessment tools was conducted using MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Twenty-one articles satisfied the criteria. A total of 66 nonredundant pain behavior items were identified. To determine whether item...

Dentist Practice Patterns and Therapeutic Confidence in the Treatment of Pain Related to Temporomandibular Disorders in a Dental Practice-Based Research Network.
CONCLUSION: The most common treatments for TMD-related pain were reversible treatments; however, over half of the dentists performed occlusal adjustment for TMD-related pain. The results of this study suggest that an evidence-practice gap exists for occlusal adjustment for TMD-related pain. PMID: 28437512 [PubMed - in process]

Patient Perception of Acute Pain Management: Data from Three Tertiary Care Hospitals.
Conclusion. Pre- and postoperative pain remain a prevalent problem that requires a consensus and joint efforts for improvement. PMID: 28458592 [PubMed - in process]

Noradrenaline, Serotonin, GABA, and Glycine in Cerebrospinal Fluid during Labor Pain: A Cross-Sectional Prospective Study.
CONCLUSION: CSF serotonin and glycine were significantly correlated with labor pain scores. These findings suggest that the serotonergic and glycinergic systems may play a role in spinal modulation of visceral pain. PMID: 28701860 [PubMed - in process]

Prevalence, Course, and Associated Factors of Pain in the Temporomandibular Joint in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis: Results of a Longitudinal Cohort Study.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of TMJ pain in patients with newly diagnosed RA is approximately 10% and decreases during follow-up, especially in the first year. Disease activity is a risk factor for TMJ pain in patients with newly diagnosed RA. PMID: 28738108 [PubMed - in process]

Chronic Pain Assessments in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Literature Review of the Selection, Administration, Interpretation, and Reporting of Unidimensional Pain Intensity Scales.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest these scales are selected, administered, and interpreted inconsistently, even in studies of the same type. Furthermore, methods of administration are rarely reported or justified making it impossible to compare findings across studies. This article concludes by recommending criteria for the future reporting of paediatric chronic pain assessments in studies. PMID: 28912638 [PubMed - in process]

The effects of regular exercise on capsaicin-induced pulpal pain and pain-induced changes in passive avoidance learning and memory in rats.
Conclusions: Taken together, the present data showed that regular exercise has inhibitory effects on capsaicin-induced pulpal pain as well as pain-induced cognitive dysfunction in rats. PMID: 29123620 [PubMed]

Double blind randomized control trial to evaluate the efficacy of ketoprofen patch to attenuate pain during venous cannulation.
Conclusions: Application of a ketoprofen patch at the proposed site of venipuncture one hour before the attempt is effective and safe for attenuating venipuncture pain. PMID: 29372024 [PubMed]

Interventional Spine and Pain Procedures in Patients on Antiplatelet and Anticoagulant Medications (Second Edition): Guidelines From the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the International Neuromodulation Society, the North American Neuromodulation Society, and the World Institute of Pain
The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) 2012 survey of meeting attendees showed that existing ASRA anticoagulation guidelines for regional anesthesia were insufficient for their needs. Those surveyed agreed that procedure-specific and patient-specific factors required separate guidelines for pain and spine procedures. In response, a guidelines committee was formed. After preliminary review of published complications reports and studies, the committee stratified interventional spine and pain procedures according to potential bleeding risk: low-, intermediate-, and high-risk procedures. The ASRA ...

Continuous Dentoalveolar Neuropathic Pain Response to Repeated Intravenous Ketamine Infusions: A Case Report.
This article describes a case of continuous dentoalveolar neuropathic pain in which relief was obtained following repeated administration of intravenous infusions of a subanesthetic dose of ketamine. A 50-year-old female presented in 2006 with a 1-year history of constant sharp pain in the gingiva surrounding the maxillary left second premolar and second molar rated as 10/10 on a pain intensity scale. After multiple systemic medications failed to adequately manage the patient's pain, partial pain reduction was obtained (4/10) with daily use of methadone 50 mg in combination with application of a topical compound including ...

The outcome of epiduroscopy treatment in patients with chronic low back pain and radicular pain, operated or non-operated for lumbar disc herniation: a retrospective study in 88 patients.
Conclusions: Epiduroscopy helps to improve the back and leg pain due to lumbar disc herniation in the early stage. At one year an improvement still exists, and the non-operated group seems to benefit most of the procedure. PMID: 29686809 [PubMed]

Migraine Pain Location and Measures of Healthcare Use and Distress: An Observational Study.
Conclusion: Although unilateral pain location can be helpful in making a migraine diagnosis, it does not appear to have additional clinical implications. Additionally, its absence does not rule out a diagnosis of migraine since more than half of migraineurs have bilateral head pain. PMID: 29973968 [PubMed - in process]

Emotional and Motivational Pain Processing: Current State of Knowledge and Perspectives in Translational Research.
Abstract Pain elicits fear and anxiety and promotes escape, avoidance, and adaptive behaviors that are essential for survival. When pain persists, motivational priority and attention shift to pain-related information. Such a shift often results in impaired functionality, leading to maladaptive pain-related fear and anxiety and escape and avoidance behaviors. Neuroimaging studies in chronic pain patients have established that brain activity, especially in cortical and mesolimbic regions, is different from activity observed during acute pain in control subjects. In this review, we discuss the psychophysiological and...

Pain Complaints in Patients Undergoing Orthognathic Surgery.
Abstract The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the frequency of orofacial (nonodontogenic, neuropathic, or atypical) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and/or masticatory muscle pain in orthognathic patients in a tertiary institution. A total of 286 consecutive patients undergoing sagittal split osteotomy from 2014 to 2016 were included. Thirty-nine (13.6%) patients presented with TMJ pain and 10 (3.5%) with orofacial nonodontogenic pain before orthognathic surgery; 79.6% (39/49) of these patients had no pain 1 year after surgery. Twenty-nine patients (12.2%) with no preoperative orofacial pain and 22 (...
