Transversus Abdominis Plane Block for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Abdominal Wall Pain Following Surgery: A Case Series.
CONCLUSIONS: TAP blocks are a valuable addition to the diagnostic armamentarium of pain physicians confronted with abdominal pain of unclear origin. Although most patients responded to the LA injection, the varying degrees of response duration may have been influenced by the different etiologies underlying each condition and the variable expressions of placebo responses. Once the abdominal wall and/or its nerves are identified as pain generators, the optimal therapeutic management remains to be determined. Available literature as well as our case series show that long-term benefit may be obtained with 1 or more injections,...

Association between Pain in Adolescence and Low Back Pain in Adulthood: Studying a Cohort of Mine Workers.
Conclusions. There were no clear associations between self-reported pain in adolescence and LBP in adulthood. Self-reported daily ratings of LBP were associated with LBP from the health examination. Possible limitations for this study were the retrospective design and few participants. PMID: 28367328 [PubMed - in process]

Effects of Experimental Pain and Lidocaine on Mechanical Somatosensory Profile and Face Perception.
CONCLUSION: Short-lasting experimental muscle pain was capable of causing loss of tactile sensitivity as well as perceptual distortion of the face, regardless of preconditioning with a topical lidocaine patch. Short-term application of a lidocaine patch did not significantly affect the mechanical somatosensory profile. PMID: 28437507 [PubMed - in process]

Developing a Sense of Knowing and Acquiring the Skills to Manage Pain in Children with Profound Cognitive Impairments: Mothers' Perspectives.
Abstract Children with profound cognitive impairment (PCI) are a heterogenous group who often experience frequent and persistent pain. Those people closest to the child are key to assessing their pain. This mixed method study aimed to explore how parents acquire knowledge and skills in assessing and managing their child's pain. Eight mothers completed a weekly pain diary and were interviewed at weeks 1 and 8. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis and the quantitative data using descriptive statistics. Mothers talked of learning through a system of trial and error ("learning to get on with it"); th...

Use of a Dental Vibration Tool to Reduce Pain From Digital Blocks: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions: Our results show a statistically significant difference in mean injection pain score during digital block of the hand when the DentalVibe device is used for vibration anesthesia. Larger studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

Bone scintigraphy in patients with pain.
Authors: Shin SH, Kim SJ Abstract Nuclear medicine imaging is widely used in pain medicine. Low back pain is commonly encountered by physicians, with its prevalence from 49% to 70%. Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are usually used to evaluate the cause of low back pain, however, these findings from these scans could also be observed in asymptomatic patients. Bone scintigraphy has an additional value in patients with low back pain. Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is defined as a painful disorder of the extremities, which is characterized by sensory, autonomic, vasomotor, and trophi...

Headache Exacerbates Pain Characteristics in Temporomandibular Disorders.
CONCLUSION: Co-existence of headache further exacerbates clinical characteristics in patients with painful TMD, which implies involvement of common mechanisms and pathways of vulnerability in these patients. PMID: 28973049 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Are Pain-Related Temporomandibular Disorders the Product of an Interaction Between Psychological Factors and Self-Reported Bruxism?
CONCLUSION: These findings do not support the view that the effect of bruxism on TMD pain is stronger in patients who experience higher levels of psychological distress compared to those with lower levels of distress. PMID: 29019474 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of Sex and Stress on Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain-Like Behavior in Rats.
CONCLUSION: RS produced an increased bilateral sensitivity to stimuli applied to the vibrissal pad following infraorbital nerve injury, irrespective of sex. This observed sensitivity subsequently persisted in RS-sham female rats but not in RS-sham male rats. Stress induced a significant but moderate increase in pain-like behavior in female rats compared to male rats. RS had no significant sex effects on IFN-γ levels, EPM parameters, or body weight gain. This suggests that stress may have a selective effect on pain-like behavior in both sexes, but the possible mechanisms are unclear. PMID: 29073664 [PubMed - in process]

School Anxiety in Children and Adolescents with Chronic Pain.
This article reviews the cooccurrence of pediatric chronic pain and anxiety, identifies unique sources of heightened school anxiety among youth with chronic pain, and describes current approaches for assessing anxiety in pediatric pain settings. Highlighted by this review is the absence of a comprehensive evidence-based approach for assessing school anxiety in pediatric chronic pain. Given the psychometric limitations inherent to gathering data from a single source, recommendations for advancing measurement methods are provided. Novel approaches may be needed to shed more light on the way in which school anxiety is experie...

State of education regarding ultrasound-guided interventions during pain fellowships in Korea: a survey of recent fellows.
Conclusions: Instruction regarding US-guided pain management interventions varied among fellowship training hospitals, highlighting the need for the development of educational standards that mandate a minimum number of US-guided nerve blocks or injections during fellowships in interventional pain management. Interventional Pain Management in Multidisciplinary Chronic Pain Clinics: A Prospective Multicenter Cohort Study with One-Year Follow-Up.
Conclusions: IPM are seldom prescribed in Portuguese MCPC. Further studies on IPM safety and effectiveness are necessary for clear understanding the role of these techniques in CP management. PMID: 29163990 [PubMed]

Changes in Anxiety and Depression Are Mediated by Changes in Pain Severity in Patients Undergoing Lower-Extremity Total Joint Arthroplasty
Conclusions Presurgical affective symptoms not only have an effect on change in postsurgical pain, whereby lower preoperative scores on depression and anxiety were associated with lower postsurgical pain, but also postsurgical decreases in pain were associated with lower levels of depression and anxiety after surgery. Taking these points into consideration may prove useful in working toward better outcomes for TJA.
