Systematic Review of Multidisciplinary Chronic Pain Treatment Facilities.
This study reviewed the published literature evaluating multidisciplinary chronic pain treatment facilities to provide an overview of their availability, caseload, wait times, and facility characteristics. A systematic literature review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines following a search of MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases. Inclusion criteria stipulated that studies be original research, survey more than one pain treatment facility directly, and describe a range of available treatments. Fourteen articles satisfied inclusion criteria. Results showed little consistency in the research design used to describe pain...

Pregabalin for Refractory Radicular Leg Pain due to Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: A Preliminary Prospective Study.
Abstract We investigated the efficacy of pregabalin (PGB) for neuropathic leg pain in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) patients with disturbed activities of daily living (ADL)/quality of life (QOL) in a prospective observational study. Subjects were a total of 104 LSS patients with neuropathic pain (NeP) in leg and neurological intermittent claudication (IMC) refractory to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for at least a month. NeP was identified using screening tool, Pain DETECT questionnaire. Visual analog scale (VAS) scores and responses to the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Back Pain Evaluation Quest...

Gender Differences in Pain-Physical Activity Linkages among Older Adults: Lessons Learned from Daily Life Approaches.
Conclusions. Findings highlight that pain is significantly associated with physical activity in old age. The nature of this association depends on the time scale that is considered and differs between women and men. PMID: 27445599 [PubMed - in process]

Finding Peace Beyond the Pain: Sunder's Journey in the Hospice.
Authors: Rao S Abstract Dame Cicely Saunders revolutionized the concept of pain by coining the term "total pain", the sum of the physical, psychological, social, spiritual, emotional components that make up the total pain experience. Optimal pain relief may not be possible until all elements of the pain and suffering are addressed. This narrative describes the journey of Sunder in the hospice. A caring husband, and a doting father, he came to the hospice by force, in immense pain and suffering. He stayed on by choice and found the peace he was looking for beyond his pain and sufferings, ably supported by the dedica...

The Perception and Estimation of Others' Pain according to Children.
Abstract Accurate interpretation of pain expressed by others is important for socialization; however, the development of this skill in children is still poorly understood. Empathy for pain models propose two main components (affective and cognitive), which develop at different stages of life. The study's objective was to investigate the children's ability between 3 and 12 years of age to detect and assess the pain intensity in others using visual stimuli depicting either facial expressions of pain or hands in painful contexts. 40 preschool children and 62 school-aged children were recruited. Children observed seri...

Successful Treatment of Opioid-Refractory Cancer Pain with Short-Course, Low-Dose Ketamine.
Authors: Waldfogel JM, Nesbit S, Cohen SP, Dy SM Abstract Opioids remain the mainstay of treatment for severe cancer pain, but up to 20% of patients have persistent or refractory pain despite rapid and aggressive opioid titration, or develop refractory pain after long-term opioid use. In these scenarios, alternative agents and mechanisms for analgesia should be considered. This case report describes a 28-year-old man with metastatic pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer with severe, intractable pain despite high-dose opioids including methadone and a hydromorphone patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). After treatment with...

Results from 10 Years of a CBT Pain Self-Management Outpatient Program for Complex Chronic Conditions.
Discussion. The PMGs improved pain self-management for patients with complex pain. Future research should use a randomized controlled design to better understand the outcomes of PMGs. PMID: 27891062 [PubMed - in process]

Healthcare Providers' Knowledge and Current Practice of Pain Assessment and Management: How Much Progress Have We Made?
Abstract Context. Despite improvement in pain management and availability of clinical treatment guidelines, patients in Jordan are still suffering from pain. Negative consequences of undertreated pain are being recognized as a reason for further illnesses and poor quality of life. Healthcare providers (HCPs) are responsible for relieving pain of their patients. Objective. To evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of HCPs toward pain management in Jordan. Methods. A 16-item questionnaire with agree or disagree options was given to 662 HCPs in seven hospitals in Jordan who volunteered to participate in the study. Fo...

Chronic Abdominal Pain in Children and Adolescents: Parental Threat Perception Plays a Major Role in Seeking Medical Consultations.
Conclusions. Parental pain-related threat perception is strongly related to health care seeking in childhood CAP. Addressing threat perception might be a fruitful parent-centered approach in clinical practice. PMID: 28003776 [PubMed - in process]

Entropy of Masseter Muscle Pain Sensitivity: A New Technique for Pain Assessment.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that manipulation of MPS of the masseter muscle with painful glutamate injections can increase the diversity of MPS, which is reflected in entropy measures. Entropy allows quantification of the diversity of MPS, which may be important in clinical assessment of pain states such as myofascial temporomandibular disorders. Localized Pain Hypersensitivity in Older Women with Cervicogenic Headache: A Quantitative Sensory Testing Study.
CONCLUSION: Older women with cervicogenic headache have localized pain sensitivity to cold stimuli, suggesting peripheral mechanisms underlie the hyperalgesia. PMID: 28118424 [PubMed - in process]

Rapid and Delayed Effects of Pulsed Radiofrequency on Neuropathic Pain: Electrophysiological, Molecular, and Behavioral Evidence Supporting Long-Term Depression.
CONCLUSIONS: Low-voltage bipolar PRF produces LTD through selective suppression on the C-component, but not on the A-component. It also inhibits ERK activation within neurons and astrocytes in SDHs. The findings suggest that PRF alleviates long-lasting neuropathic pain by selectively and persistently modulating C-fiber-mediated spinal nociceptive hypersensitivity.Key words: Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF), dorsal root ganglion (DRG), neuropathic pain, ERK activation, evoked field potential, ATF-3, long-term depression (LTD), spinal nerve ligation (SNL).
