Which Seems to Be Worst? Pain Severity and Quality of Life between Patients with Lateral Hip Pain and Low Back Pain.
Conclusions: Patients who suffered from CLBP showed greater pain severity and HRQoL discomfort with regard to patients with GTPS. Despite greater scores for CLBP, the PRS did not seem to be different between both conditions. PMID: 30425756 [PubMed - in process]

Neuropathic Pain Prevalence of Older Adults in an Urban Area of Iran: A Population-Based Study.
Conclusions: In addition to neuropathic pain, other subtypes of pain prevalence and the comorbidities are determined in the community-dwelling elder adults. This study highlights the importance of neuropathic pain and its adverse consequences and can be used to manage this populations' needs in Iran effectively. PMID: 30719350 [PubMed]

Pain incidence, assessment, and management in Vietnam: a cross-sectional study of 12,136 respondents.
Conclusion: Pain severe enough to impact patients' daily lives is common in Vietnam. Treatment costs are a significant economic burden and may help explain why only a minority of patients seek treatment. Access to lower cost, effective treatment for pain should be improved. PMID: 30881090 [PubMed]

Characteristics of Chronic Pain among Head and Neck Cancer Patients Treated with Radiation Therapy: A Retrospective Study.
Abstract Pain is common among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). However, there are very limited data on chronic pain among HNC patients treated with radiation therapy (XRT). In this retrospective study, we focused on the characteristics of chronic post-XRT pain in such patients. Post-XRT pain is common among HNC patients; however, we found discrepancy between frequency of treatment and frequency of chronic pain, suggesting poor documentation of pain in the medical records. Among patients who reported to have chronic post-XRT pain, most of them described having severe pain and used descriptors of neuropathi...

A Prospective Six-Month Study of Chronic Pain Sufferers: A Novel OTC Neuromodulation Therapy.
Conclusion: Ninety-seven percent of the recruited subjects, all of whom had previously reported clinically significant pain relief using the 7-day PSWT device, sustained this relief for 6 months by using the device on an as-needed basis. PMID: 31687056 [PubMed - in process]

Pathophysiologic Approach to Pain Therapy for Complex Pain Entities: A Narrative Review.
Abstract Pain management is challenging for both clinicians and patients. In fact, pain patients are frequently undertreated or even completely untreated. Optimal treatment is based on targeting the underlying mechanisms of pain and tailoring the management modality for each patient using a personalized approach. This narrative review deals with pain conditions that have a complex underlying mechanism and need an individualized and frequently multifactorial approach to pain management. The research is based on previously conducted studies, and does not contain any studies with human participants or animals perfo...

Final Year Nursing Students' Knowledge and Attitudes regarding Children's Pain.
Abstract Pain is one of the commonest reasons why children visit the hospital. Inadequately treated pain in children can negatively affect their physical, psychological, and social well-being; it also places financial burden on families of affected children and healthcare systems in general. Considering the eventual suffering of vulnerable children and their families if nursing students are insufficiently educated and ill-prepared, the current study aimed at assessing final year nursing student's knowledge and attitudes pertaining to pediatric pain. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 final...

10  kHz Spinal Cord Stimulation for Combined Alleviation of Post-Laminectomy Syndrome and Chronic Abdominal Pain: A Case Report.
We describe the use of high-frequency SCS to alleviate the patient's post-laminectomy pain as well as his abdominal pain. Our case describes SCS use with multi-level lead placement targeting both post-laminectomy pain and abdominal pain. We describe a strategy that can be useful to patients with concurrent pain from more than one source. Our case also adds to the growing evidence supporting the use of SCS for treating chronic visceral pain syndromes. PMID: 32431535 [PubMed]

Episodic Cancer Pain: Patient Reporting, Prevalence, and Clinicodemographic Associations at Initial Cancer Pain Clinic Assessment.
Conclusions: Episodic or transient patient-reported CP flares often do not meet the more conventional criteria that define BTcP and IcP, the principal episodic CP types. Both BTcP and IcP occur frequently and both are associated with a NPC, higher pain intensity, and less opioid underuse in the management of CP. Further studies are warranted to both better understand the complex presentations of episodic CP and inform its classification. PMID: 32566062 [PubMed - in process]

Evaluation of a Pharmacist Managed Telephone Pain Clinic for Neuropathy Treatment.
Authors: Dumpit JR, McGuire CD, Wang FY, Crandall B, Chen TC Abstract Pain is prevalent in our society, affecting more than a quarter-million U.S. adults and leading to poor patient outcomes. At the Veteran's Affairs San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS), a Telephone Pain Clinic (TPC) was developed to improve these outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of TPC in improving neuropathic pain. A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the VASDHS comparing pre- and post- self-rated Numeric Rating Scale (NRS-11), an 11-point scale from 0 to 10 with 0 equaling no pain and 10 equaling mos...

Developing a Framework to Support the Delivery of Effective Pain Management for Children: An Exploratory Qualitative Study.
This study was built on previous work about key elements that support children's pain management, by exploring their relevance and practical application with 43 healthcare practitioners. We carried out focus groups with band 5 nurses (n = 6) and advanced nurse practitioners (n = 11) and semistructured interviews with pain nurses (n = 16) and consultants (n = 10). We also presented and discussed our findings with an advisory group. Findings demonstrated that the following elements were considered to be important: delivering pain management with confidence, supporting colleagues with protocols and guidance, e...
