It ’ s all about protecting members and services
Protecting members and their welfare at work and beyond was a key theme of debates at UNISON’s higher education conference in Nottingham. On pensions, delegates condemned repeated attacks on university support staff’s retirement funds – particularly attempts to end their defined benefit schemes and move them onto worse  pensions. Conference stressed the need for a “whole-union approach” as individual universities try to pick off one branch after another. “Make no mistake, they are coming for you,” warned a delegate from Staffordshire University, where staff had been removed from the Local Government Pension ...

Body parts stockpiling shows why crucial NHS services should never be privatised
Commenting on the discovery that the contractor Heathcare Environmental has been stockpiling tonnes of human body parts and clinical waste and has failed to dispose of them properly, UNISON head of health Sara Gorton said: “This is simply horrific. It’s unlikely that such a distressing situation would have happened had the service remained in-house. “Ethics and decent behaviour aside, it begs the question as to why services that are such a crucial part of the NHS are ever outsourced in the first place.” Notes to editors: – UNISON is the UK’s largest union, with more than 1.3 million members providing pub...

Blog: Low pay? No way
This morning, I joined UNISON members on the picket line in Camden. They’re on strike because their employer – NSL, an outsourced parking firm – won’t pay them the salary they deserve. Their call is a simple one – low pay, no way – and it’s one that resonates across our union. Wherever you work, whatever you do and whoever your employer is, UNISON members deserve dignity, respect and a fair wage. Considering the vast sums that NSL takes in from parking in Camden – and the bumper salaries earned by their top executives – we know they can afford to meet UNISON’s reasonable demands for proper pay. All thes...

How a vending machine company may help dementia patients
A vending machine company that microchips willing employees so they can ditch their microchipped company ID cards is working on a GPS-enabled chip to track  Alzheimer’s patients and others with serious medical conditions. Three Square Market (River Falls, Wis.) will be seeking 510(k) approval of its GPS tracking chip from the FDA in early 2019, according to company president Patrick McMullan. It also started a new company for its chip business, Three Square Chip. “The good news is that the folks who are par...

Understanding the Medical Device Single Audit Program (MDSAP) audit process
Eamonn Hoxey, BSI Group The Medical Device Single Audit Program–MDSAP–was developed by the International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF) to conduct regulatory audits of quality management systems (QMS). Health Canada’s decision to require an MDSAP audit to maintain Canadian Device Licenses is leading to a rapid increase in use of the program. There is a set formula to calculate the time allotted for an audit, based on the number of processes that are carried out. The MDSAP Consortium have recently updated the procedures for calculating the duration of an MDSAP audit. As a result, there could be reductions...

The fight to save Chesterfield hospital
UNISON members are campaigning to stop their jobs being outsourced from Chesterfield Royal Hospital Foundation, with a key decision on their futures being made at a board meeting next week (Wednesday 25 July). The board at the hospital are meeting to decide whether to transfer services such as estates and facilities to a wholly owned subsidiary company, a move that could mean staff losing the benefits and protections of working for the NHS. A similar situation recently occurred at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust, until a UNISON campaign meant the trust dropped their plans to transfer more than 900 workers in...

UNISON vows greater support for private sector members
UNISON is fine-tuning its response to the growing back-door privatisation of public services. The union will continue to campaign against outsourcing, while also addressing the needs of its members – existing and new – who suddenly find themselves working for private companies. Activists attending the National Delegate Conference in Brighton last week heard that those working for private contractors are the fastest growing group of UNISON members. In 2017 over 30% of new members recruited by UNISON worked work for private or community employers. Many of these members face zero-hours contracts and the minimum wage, whil...
