An Unusual Business Model
In the wide field of incubators, accelerators, co-working and wet lab spaces, and venture capital, Naglreiter Medical Device Development Organization (NMDDO) occupies a unique niche. The company, based in Miramar, FL, was started with the goal of reducing the time and resources that go into building a new medical device company or developing an innovative medical technology. Weeks or months, as well as millions of dollars can go into finding or building a facility, crafting a quality system, and hiring talent. NMDDO offers entrepreneurs a chance to skip to the fun stuff—developing the technology or product. The company...

UNISON welcomes West Sussex jobs move
UNISON has welcomed the decision to “insource” admin jobs at the West Sussex multi-agency safeguarding hub that deals with children and young people. Administration at the hub is currently covered by a county council contract with Capita. But now the council says it is bringing the admin jobs under direct management because “vulnerable children are at risk of harm due to insufficient numbers of assessments being undertaken within 24 hours”. UNISON south east regional organiser Caroline Fife (pictured) said that the union is pleased at the decision, adding: “The reality is it could do little else if it cannot meet...

Google Just Made a Big Move in Its War Against the iPhone
Google announced on Thursday that it would pay $1.1 billion to acquire certain employees from the Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC. The maneuver is a big play by Google to make its Pixel smartphone a more formidable opponent to Apple’s iPhone. Although Google controls the software that’s distributed on more than 2 billion Android phones worldwide, it doesn’t have much influence on how the actual devices are made. If you take a look at the world’s smartphone landscape, the market is clearly divided between Apple and Samsung. Apple’s iPhones account for 12% of global smartphone shipments, while Sa...

“We are strong and stable – even if the government isn’t.” That was the message from UNISON’s water, environment and transport (WET) service group executive chair Ruth Davis this morning, as she addressed the group’s conference in Brighton. “We live in difficult times, but we must carry on and not allow” people to make us change our lives,” she said of the recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester, together with the Grenfell Tower fire. Why Dave Markowitz's favorite room is the courtroom
Anyone who followed the epic Oregon v. Oracle battle knows how ugly it got. Oracle America sued the state to collect what it was owed for its work on the ill-fated Cover Oregon health insurance website. The state struck back with a fraud and racketeering suit against the software giant. All told, the dispute spawned seven separate legal actions. While Attorney General El len Rosenblum represented the state, she outsourced much of the work to Dave Markowitz and his team at the Portland law firm he…

Funding care can lift women workers out of poverty, Welsh councils urged
UNISON Cymru/Wales is asking for meetings with every Welsh council to talk about better funding for the care they commission from non-profit organisations – a more that would lift carers out of poverty. The union wrote to all the councils yesterday, International Women’s Day, warning that thousands of women across the country “are suffering the effects of in-work poverty, despite their dedication in caring for older people”. Extreme financial constraints in the non-profit care sector have seen carers’ supplements for sleep-ins at service users’ homes slashed, along with holiday pay, bank holiday pay rates and ...

Selling Bagels Off A Greek Donkey Could Be A Better Idea Than Looking For A Job At 57
Years ago ― before husband, kids, houses and pets came along ― my friend Cindy and I were enjoying our last day of vacation on a black sand beach on the Greek island of Santorini when a sun-weathered old man approached us selling cups of fresh fruit off his donkey. “How much for two?” I asked in the international language of finger-pointing and other gestures. It was perhaps my fifth trip to Greece and I knew how to play the bargaining game. I feigned disgust at his first price and shooed him away. But instead of lowering his price as I expected he would, he plopped himself down on the edge of my sun lounge...
