A month of perennial change
Well, October was a month of change. And not just when it comes to clocks and seasons. It started off with the country due to leave the EU on Hallowe’en – “do or die”, deal or no deal. It ended with another Brexit extension and everyone gearing up for the third general election in four years. But some things are perennial and they’re always on UNISON’s agenda. The union’s month kicked off with our retired members and police and justice staff conferences in Southport. The service group conference saw assistant general secretary Christina McAnea tell delegates: “We need to get the message out about the need t...

Low-paid workers protest at UCL ’s ‘callous’ employment system
Hundreds of UCL cleaners, porters, security officers and catering staff will demand their outsourced jobs be returned to the university, so workers doing the same jobs receive the same pay, pension and annual leave, says UNISON today (Thursday). This afternoon (from 1pm to 3pm) support staff from across UCL will gather outside the university’s main entrance to draw attention to the campaign for their jobs to be taken back in-house. UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis will be there to hear how UCL’s outsourcing programme has affected their lives and to address the workers in the UCL Quad at 1.30pm. The 900 staff – a...

University staff in Edinburgh vote for strike action
UNISON members have voted for strike action – by 100% in a 75% turn-out – in a bid to keep Edinburgh’s Queen Margaret University as their employer. The members who voted are campus operations staff, including supervisors, security officers, facilities assistants and members of the grounds team. They are at risk of seeing their jobs outsourced as the university finalises a tendering exercise covering the whole ancillary workforce, some of whose work is already contracted out to private companies. Commenting on the ballot result today, UNISON Scotland head of higher education Lorcan Mullen said: “UNISON members in t...
