‘ We ’ ve been stabbed in the back by Boris Johnson ’
Pay dominated the second day of UNISON’s virtual health conference, with delegates discussing the crisis now facing members’ finances. Conference heard of the huge number of health workers earning below the living wage, of hardworking colleagues forced to use food banks, of the student nurses who fell behind in their training as they were enlisted to help fight COVID and now without the investment and support to get back on track. Thousands of exhausted NHS staff – including healthcare assistants, ambulance workers and hospital porters – are facing what is predicted to be the worst winter in history for the NHS, a ...

UNISON has today welcomed the news that private company Sodexo, working within the Doncaster & Bassetlaw hospital sites, has agreed to implement and honour the NHS 3% pay deal for 2021 for Sodexo staff that were TUPE transferred over to them from the Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2018. UNISON wins outsourcing battle at London medical university
UNISON has won a decision to bring outsourced workers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) back in house at the end of the current contract in August 2022. The move follows months of negotiations, after the union submitted a claim for the insourcing of staff employed by Samsic UK in 2019 on behalf of the dedicated cleaners and security staff at the school. In a huge win for the outsourced workers, parity of terms and conditions will now be offered to the staff, many of whom have worked tirelessly on the front line throughout COVID-19 to keep the researchers safe and the school open to help combat ...

Privatised Health Services Worsen Pandemic
By Anis Chowdhury and Jomo Kwame SundaramSYDNEY and KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 2021 (IPS) Decades of public health cuts have quietly taken a huge human toll, now even more pronounced with the pandemic. Austerity programmes, by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, have forced countries to cut public spending, including health provisioning. ‘Government is the problem’ “India’s COVID crisis: A deadly example of government failure”, “Government failures still hamper [UK] Covid-19 response”. Such headlines have become commonplace as the pandemic rages on, with no sign of ending soon. Their godparents d...

Blog: Fighting for pay across the union
UNISON is now fighting high profile pay battles across our public services and across the UK to get the fair pay rise you deserve. We, in UNISON, didn’t need reminding about the value of our public service workers, but COVID-19 has woken the world up to the unrelenting efforts of low-paid workers. Keeping people and communities safe and cared for, delivering vital vaccination programmes, and keeping children and young people educated and supported has been your daily mission. And let’s be clear, all our vital public services rely on valued and supported workers. But when we can’t count on the Westminster government a...

Outsourcing as a threat to public health: the case for insourcing public sector cleaners and facilities management, New Economics Foundation

The COVID experience: difficult to talk about, but vital that we do
Post-traumatic stress disorder, exhaustion, the demands of a backlog of non-COVID care during a staff exodus – these are just some of the issues currently facing the NHS workforce, UNISON’s special delegate conference heard yesterday. Linda Hobson from Newcastle Hospitals branch opened Wednesday afternoon’s business by moving a motion from the Northern region on The NHS after the pandemic. “It’s difficult to talk about what we’ve experienced, but it’s important that we do talk about it,” she told delegates. And as an NHS worker and branch secretary of a busy and acute hospital that saw some of the UK’s fi...

Health pay rise must be for everyone in the  NHS
Thousands of health service staff employed by private companies must not lose out on the wage rise that’s expected to be announced soon for their NHS colleagues, says UNISON today (Thursday). Porters, cleaners, catering assistants and other healthcare workers in NHS jobs outsourced to private contractors have performed tirelessly throughout the pandemic, says UNISON. But the union fears most will be excluded from the coming pay increase unless private firms, the government and NHS trusts act now. UNISON is calling on all private companies running health service contracts to pledge at least to match any governm...

This represents a major weakness in the UK ' s ability to cope with subsequent waves of Covid-19. As a matter of public health, this paper recommends that: the government should launch an urgent and independent inquiry into the outsourcing of key workers, including cleaners, to assess whether, as the literature suggests, there is a link between outsourcing and higher rates of infection; and as a pandemic precautionary measure, all local authorities and NHS trusts should immediately assess their p...

Calling all outsourced members in the NHS
UNISON is seeking feedback from members who work for private contractors in healthcare, as the union works to improve pay and terms and conditions for all NHS contracted staff. The short survey is part of UNISON’s One Team Us2 pay campaign, which is calling for contracted staff to be paid the same rates and benefits as their colleagues who are directly employed by the NHS. It covers such areas as salary, personal finances and cost of living. So whether you are a cleaner, porter, housekeeper, security officer, or have any other role delivering NHS services to the public, for a private company, the union wants to hear from...
