Report: Sen. Durbin blasts Abbott over layoffs, separation agreement
Senator Dick Durbin (Ill.-D) is laying into Abbott (NYSE:ABT) after the company announced it’s laying off approximately 150 workers and sending their jobs overseas, according to The Chicago Tribune. The Illinois senator said he sent a letter last Thursday to Abbott CEO Miles White over the lost jobs, which the paper says are being outsourced to India-based information technology services firm Wipro. Durbin was most concerned with the separation agreement he claims laid-off Abbott workers are required to sign as a condition for severance benefits. In the letter, the Senator said the workers are being asked to “...

An unheralded story of medtech success – How Sapheon went from an idea on the back of a napkin to a $240 million exit to Covidien
Welcome to the Medsider interview series, a special new feature at MassDevice, which will appear regularly. All interviews are conducted by Scott Nelson, Founder of Medsider and Partnership Lead at Touch Surgery. We hope you enjoy them! I’ll be candid. This is an interview I’ve wanted to do for quite some time. During my time at Covidien, I considered myself fortunate to be involved with the acquisition of Sapheon, a startup company that manufactured a disruptive therapy for venous reflux. The more I learned about Sapheon through the diligence process (as well as the post-acquisition activities), the more enamored I be...

Privatisation: one of the greatest scourges of our NHS
Privatisation is one of the greatest scourges of our National Health Service. Sold off. Outsourced. Divided into profitable chunks. However the privatisation deed is done, it invariably hurts patients, services and staff alike. We’ve seen in recent years – under very different governments – that the dogma of privatisation has been allowed to creep into the NHS. At a time of austerity and squeezed budgets the privatisation drum is being beaten ever louder. But this is not an issue which is confined to our borders. Privatisation of health services is a global problem. That’s why today the European Federation of Publi...

The steady and successful climb of BaroNova
Hugh Narciso, CEO of BAROnova Welcome to the Medsider interview, a special new feature at MassDevice, which will appear regularly. All interviews are conducted by Scott Nelson, Founder, Medsider. We hope you enjoy them. Henry Ford is famous for stating, “If I had asked people what they wanted, I would have built a faster horse.” Although it’s arguable whether he ever uttered those words, the statement is still very powerful. And it’s one that Hugh Narciso has taken to heart. In fact, in the early days of BAROnova, when Hugh and his team were getting feedback from KOL’s, they utilized this framework to help propel...

Beach barbecues, feminist craft, prostitution talks and hula hooping…
“The union needs you” was the message from delegates at UNISON’s women’s conference in Brighton this afternoon as they debated engaging women in the union. As part of this week’s Love UNISON campaign, Jackie Lewis from the union’s LGBT committee urged delegates to recruit and organise in order to keep the union strong. The week is part of UNISON and the TUC’s response to the Trade Union Bill which attacks union funding, facility time and campaigning ability. The government “wants us to give in, give up and go quietly,” said Ms Lewis. “But we’re not giving in and we’re not going anywhere.” ...

Our Services Our Say – and UNISON members at the sharp end
We are living through unprecedented times of enormous public service funding and cuts job losses, with UNISON members at the sharp end. What makes a difficult situation even worse are the actions of a government determined to hoodwink people into thinking that further privatisation of public services can somehow give us better quality services – without the cost. UNISON has always argued that public services must stay public unless there is an evidenced ‘public interest case’ to prove otherwise. So we welcome the Our Services Our Say campaign which puts the case forward about the fundamental importance of public se...
