Partnerships between podiatrists and vascular surgeons in building effective wound care centers
This practice memo, a collaborative effort between the Young Physicians' Program of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Young Surgeons Committee of the Society for Vascular Surgery, is intended to aid podiatrists and vascular surgeons in the early years of their respective careers, especially those involved in the care of patients with chronic wounds. During these formative years, learning how to successfully establish an interprofessional partnership is crucial to provide the best possible care to this important population of patients.

Evaluation of Near-Instant Noninvasive Optical Imaging of Tissue Perfusion for Vascular Assessment
Noninvasive vascular tests are critical for identifying patients who would benefit from surgical revascularization, yet are highly limited in diabetic patients. This case study evaluated the potential of spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) as a noninvasive vascular testing modality for lower limb assessment.

Preoperative Frailty Assessment Predicts Loss of Independence Following Vascular Surgery
In this study, we sought to evaluate whether the preoperative CFS score could be used to predict loss of independence after major vascular procedures.

Comparison of propaten heparin-bonded vascular graft with distal anastomotic patch versus autogenous saphenous vein graft in tibial artery bypass.
Conclusions Propaten grafts with distal anastomotic patch have similar clinical outcomes compared to the saphenous vein graft in tibial artery bypass. Our data support the use of Propaten graft with distal anastomotic patch as a viable conduit of choice in patients undergoing tibial artery bypass. PMID: 28835186 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Is the creation of a simplified multicentric database of activity in vascular surgery feasible?
To establish a database of activity in vascular surgery within an association of surgeons with the aim of collecting all procedures of vascular surgery in order to be able retrospectively to use them for studies and publications.

VascuRad: Qualitative study of the training in radiation protection of the young French vascular surgeons
In the last decade, endovascular techniques took a dominating place in the activity of the vascular surgeons. The result was an increase of the exposure of the surgeons and patients to ionizing radiation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of the training in radiation protection of the young French vascular surgeons.

Interest of surgical vascular reconstructions aiming at preserving hemodialysis accesses
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the surgical vascular reconstructions made to preserve vascular accesses for hemodialysis and to study their benefit in terms of safeguarding of the venous capital, use of catheters, time before cannulation, as well as patency and postoperative morbi-mortality, by comparing them with the creation of a new access.

Hospital readmissions after elective lower extremity vascular procedures.
Conclusions Readmission after lower extremity revascularization is associated with disease severity for both procedures. Factors associated with readmission following lower extremity bypass included heart failure, transfusions, hyponatremia, black race, and bronchodilator use. Risk factors for endovascular readmissions were often chronic conditions including coronary artery disease, kidney disease, hypertension, and hypertensive medications. Awareness of risk factors may help providers identify high-risk patients who may benefit from increased surveillance and programs to lower readmission. PMID: 28927349 [PubMed - as...

The Inside-Out Technique: A Vascular Surgeon's Guide to Complex Catheter Placement
Patients with multiple failed dialysis accesses and limited access sites can present a significant challenge to vascular surgeons. The presence of central venous occlusion and the need for temporary or permanent dialysis catheter placement are especially problematic. Previous reports have described an “inside-out” technique that avoids the need for subclavian or femoral catheter placement by placing a supraclavicular catheter through a percutaneous femoral vein. However, very few reports of its use in vascular surgery exist.

Utilization and in-hospital outcomes associated with atherectomy in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease: An observational analysis from the National Inpatient Sample.
Conclusion The use of atherectomy was associated with significantly decreased in-hospital mortality, adverse events, and length of stay. Though, cost associated with atherectomy use is increased, this is offset by decreased in-hospital adverse outcomes. Appropriate use of atherectomy devices is an important tool in revascularization of peripheral arterial disease in select patients. PMID: 29466936 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Aggressive Phenotype of Intravascular Lymphoma Relative to Other Malignant Intra-abdominal Tumors Requiring Vascular Resection with Grafting
Intra-abdominal and retroperitoneal malignancies may require vascular surgical assistance to remove safely, with grafting of the aorta and/or vena cava to achieve negative margins. The current report reviews such major vascular-associated tumors at a single tertiary referral center.

The Effect of Mentoring Relationships on Interest in Vascular Surgery and Match Rank among Integrated Vascular Surgery Residents
Mentoring relationships are encouraged for medical students interested in surgical specialties. Research on mentoring in other specialties indicates that while having a mentor does not show benefit, effective mentoring influences success in the residency match. We investigated the role of medical school mentoring relationships of integrated Vascular Surgery residents.

Predictors of Myocardial Infarction after Suprainguinal Bypass Using the Vascular Quality Initiative Cardiac Risk Index
Several models have been developed to estimate the risk of postoperative myocardial infarction (POMI). The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) Cardiac Risk Index (CRI) was developed specifically for vascular procedures; while suprainguinal bypass carried the second highest odds of POMI, the all-procedure-based model performance declined when applied to the suprainguinal subset. We sought to refine the VQI CRI for application in this high-risk group undergoing open revascularization for aortoiliac occlusive disease.
