Regionalization of services improves access to emergency vascular surgical care.
In conclusion, the vascular surgery centers at UHN and SMH have become provincial resources that enable the efficient transfer of patients with vascular surgical emergencies from across Ontario. Regionalization of services is a viable model to increase access to emergent care. PMID: 23508395 [PubMed - in process]

The Society for Vascular Surgery will participate in a new global vascular practice guidelines initiative
Recognizing the global nature of vascular care, the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) is joining the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) and the World Federation of Vascular Societies (WFVS) in a new initiative to create global practice guidelines. In this process, the SVS represents national, regional, and local vascular societies in North America; the ESVS represents national vascular societies from Europe; and the WFVS represents the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery, the Japanese Society for Vascular Surgery, the Vascular Society of India, the Vascular Society of Southern Africa, the Asi...

A survey of vascular specialists' practice patterns of inferior vena cava filter placement and retrieval.
CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores significant variability in vascular specialists practice patterns regarding IVCF. More studies and societal guidelines are needed to define best practices. PMID: 30501583 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Incidence of major complication following embolo-sclerotherapy for upper and lower extremity vascular malformations.
CONCLUSIONS: Embolo-sclerotherapy is relatively safe for upper and lower extremity vascular malformations in a high-volume experienced center where our major complication rates were 14.3% and 4.7%, respectively, which compare favorably or similar to those reported in most recent literature. These outcomes will direct treatment strategies to avoid local and systemic toxic complications in the upper and lower extremity, for both HFVM and LFVM, and to improve informed consent. Brazilian vascular surgeons experience during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
CONCLUSION: The COVID pandemic has greatly affected healthcare providers around the world. At the time of this survey, Brazilian vascular surgeons are reporting low anxiety levels during this time and are using mostly active coping mechanisms. PMID: 33019914 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The oral health status of patients with peripheral vascular disorders: A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: The scarcity of studies reporting on broader domains limited our ability to arrive at a conclusion regarding the oral health status of individuals with peripheral vascular disorders. Future studies ought to assess these domains in individuals with peripheral vascular disorders and controls to gain a more complete understanding of oral health and its potential association with peripheral vascular disorders. The Vascular Research Initiatives Conference and over 25 years of conversations on the science of vascular disease
The Vascular Research Initiatives Conference (VRIC) is an annual conference established in 1986. This conference has successfully provided a forum for the presentation and discussion of high-quality innovative and relevant research related to the scientific underpinnings of vascular surgery. We have accomplished this by bringing young and more accomplished vascular surgeon researchers together with a broad representation of other high-caliber vascular biologists. The VRIC provides a unique venue for the vascular surgery community to showcase research produced by vascular surgeon scientists—a group of physicians with an e...

Application of Porter's Five Forces Model and generic strategies for vascular surgery: should be stuck in the middle?
Abstract There are many stakeholders in the vascular marketplace from clinicians to hospitals, third party payers, medical device manufacturers and the government. Economic stress, threats of policy reform and changing health-care delivery are adding to the challenges faced by vascular surgeons. Use of Porter's Five Forces analysis to identify the sources of competition, the strength and likelihood of that competition existing, and barriers to competition that affect vascular surgery will help our specialty understand both the strength of our current competition and the strength of a position that our specialty wi...

The 2014 China meeting of the International Society for Vascular Surgery.
Abstract The 2014 meeting of the International Society for Vascular Surgery (ISVS) was held in Guangzhou, China, in conjunction with the fifth annual Wang Zhong-Gao's Vascular Forum, the eighth annual China Southern Endovascular Congress, and the third annual Straits Vascular Forum. Keynote addresses were given by Professors Christos Liapis, Wang Zhong-Gao, and Wang Shen-Ming. President Liapis presented the first ISVS Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor Wang Zhong-Gao for his multi-decade accomplishments establishing Vascular Surgery as a specialty in China. Faculty presentations were made in plenary sessions ...

In-patient adult and pediatric vascular ultrasound: Distribution and rate of positive findings.
CONCLUSION: We had a higher yield of positive findings in the adult cases. We observed a higher proportion of more complex duplex exams in the pediatric cases suggesting that a higher level expertise is needed to perform the pediatric vascular duplexes. Extra-vascular findings in patients undergoing magnetic resonance angiography of the abdomen, pelvis and lower extremities: A retrospective study of 352 patients.
Conclusions Extravascular findings are frequently encountered in magnetic resonance angiography performed for vascular indications. Clinically relevant findings are seen in a substantial part of patients and should prompt further diagnostic work-up. PMID: 28587578 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Vascular surgery: What increases the flow of students to the speciality?
CONCLUSIONS: A one-day conference can significantly impact students' perception especially when there is a lack of exposure within the undergraduate curriculum. This course helped to increase positive perception and dispute negative misconceptions about the speciality. The simulation workshops held at this conference increased students' confidence and awareness of relevant surgical skills. This conference provided a unique experience that positively impacted and inspired students and thus served as an important supplement to core medical curriculum. Trends of vascular surgery procedures in Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome differ from other patients undergoing vascular surgical procedures, with a significantly higher proportion of aortic procedures including open aneurysm repair and thoracic endovascular aortic repair. While they are younger with fewer comorbidities, due to the unique pathogenesis of their underlying connective tissue disorder, there is an overall higher rate of procedural complications and increased length of stay and cost for Marfan syndrome patients undergoing aortic surgery. Mesenteric vascular disease: A population-based cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: The reported death rates of mesenteric vascular disease in Scotland between 1979 and 2014 have nearly doubled. Mesenteric vascular disease affects twice as many women as men and is associated with social deprivation. The increased reporting of mesenteric vascular disease is likely due to increased recognition and incidence. These implications should be considered when planning healthcare provision in Scotland.
