Two-year follow-up of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds in severe infra-popliteal arterial disease.
CONCLUSIONS: At 24 months, our study found that patients with predominantly advanced infra-popliteal PAD who were treated with Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold reported improved clinical status and a low and durable rate of clinically driven target vessel failure extending out to 24 months. Thirty-three vascular residency programs among 13 countries joining forces to improve surgical education in times of COVID-19: A survey-based assessment.
CONCLUSION: Globalization and technology provide an opportunity for international education, with the goal of building well-rounded and academic vascular surgeons. This group is just the beginning of a large collaborative group among Hispanic American countries, hoping that more residency programs will join, with the aim of breaking borders in the education of vascular surgery. Results from the International Silver Graft Registry for high-risk patients treated with a metallic-silver impregnated vascular graft.
Abstract The purpose of this postmarket surveillance registry was to document the efficacy of a vascular prosthesis coated with metallic silver in high-risk patients undergoing vascular reconstructions. Patency (primary endpoint) and freedom from graft infection (secondary endpoint) data were assessed at a minimum of 12 months in patients with significant co-morbidity and/or confirmed graft infections or infected native vessels. Between November 2006 and December 2009, 230 patients with high-risk factors underwent aortic, peripheral and/or extra-anatomic reconstructions with Silver Graft(®) (SG) in six German, on...

Recent trends in publications of US vascular surgery program directors.
ConclusionsThe decrease in the number of citations/program/year raises concern about the level of academic activity in vascular surgery. Overall, the annual distribution of the topic of these citations represents a continued shift from open to endovascular cases and decreasing basic science citations. Validated Assessment Tool Paves the Way for Standardized Evaluation of Trainees on Anastomotic Models
Conclusions: Performance on an open simulation model evaluated by a standardized global rating scale correlated to trainee experience level. This initial work confirms the ease and applicability of the grading tool among multiple expert observers and different platforms, and supports additional; research into applications translating this performance into the operating room.

The vacuum-assisted closure (V.A.C®) system for surgical site infection with involved vascular grafts.
CONCLUSION: We showed that the V.A.C.® system is valuable for managing specifically surgical site infection with involved vascular grafts. Using the V.A.C.® system, reoperation rates are reduced; 85% of patients avoided graft replacement. PMID: 24879657 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Using 7.5 frames per second reduces radiation exposure in lower extremity peripheral vascular interventions.
CONCLUSION: Using fluoroscopy at the rate of 7.5 fps during peripheral vascular interventions is associated with lower radiation dose compared to the standard 15 fps with comparable success rate without associated increase in the fluoroscopy time or the amount of the contrast used. Therefore, using fluoroscopy at the rate of 7.5 fps should be considered in peripheral vascular interventions. PMID: 25208902 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Aggressive venous thromboembolism prophylaxis reduces VTE events in vascular surgery patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The overall rate of VTE was reduced by 75% after the initiation of a standard protocol for pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis. These findings justify an aggressive approach to VTE prophylaxis in vascular surgery patients. PMID: 26123057 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Supply and demand: Will we have enough vascular surgeons by 2030?
Abstract The increase in prevalence of certain cardiovascular risk factors increases susceptibility to vascular disease, which may create demand for surgical intervention. In our study, data collected by the American Association of Medical Colleges Physician Specialty Databook of 2012, the United States Census Bureau, and other nationwide organizations were referenced to calculate future changes in vascular surgeon supply and prevalence of people at risk for vascular disease. In 2010, there were 2853 active vascular surgeons. By 2040, the workforce is expected to linearly rise to 3573. There will be an exponential...

Novel Open Vascular Surgery Skills Training Model Accurately Differentiates Level of Vascular Surgical Skills (Forceps Handling, Needle Driving, and Knot Tying) in General Surgery Residents, Vascular Surgery Residents, Fellows, and Faculty
The aim of this study was to determine if the use of a novel low-fidelity simulated vascular skills training model could differentiate levels of vascular surgical skills in general and vascular surgery residents, vascular surgery fellows, and vascular surgery faculty.

A survey of 0 + 5 vascular surgery residency candidates: Perceptions of an applicant pool.
CONCLUSION: Applicants remained positive about their planned training and career paths. Attending vascular surgeons were identified as the strongest mentors, yet most students decided only in their third and fourth years to pursue 0 + 5 residencies. Educational debt remains a concern, and there may be consideration for a concerted effort to recruit potential candidates sooner. PMID: 26864776 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Recent trends in publications of US vascular surgery program directors.
Conclusion There seems to be a significant decline in the number of publications over the last 15 years. Yet, the subject of the publications has progressed from Open to TEVAR with an increase in endovascular publications. However, basic science publications reduced by half. Guidelines for hospital privileges in vascular surgery and endovascular interventions: Recommendations of the Society for Vascular Surgery
The Hospital Privileges Practice Guideline Writing Group of the Society for Vascular Surgery is making the following five recommendations concerning guidelines for hospital privileges for vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. Advanced endovascular procedures are currently entrenched in the everyday practice of specialized vascular interventionalists, including vascular surgeons, but open vascular surgery remains uniquely essential to the specialty. First, we endorse the Residency Review Committee for Surgery recommendations regarding open and endovascular cases during vascular residency and fellowship training.
