Update on the optimal management of patients with vascular extension of pheochromocytoma.
CONCLUSION: Surgeons need to be aware of this extremely rare characteristic feature of pheochromocytoma and indicated medical work-up in order to properly diagnose and manage this challenging group of patients. PMID: 25034038 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A Vascular Surgeon Plays a Critical Role in the Development of a Successful TAVR Program
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a Food and Drug Administration-approved means of treating symptomatic aortic stenosis in high-risk patients. A number of techniques to deliver valve prostheses are currently in practice, including transfemoral (TF), transapical, and transaortic approaches. Various disciplines are involved throughout this complex process. Our team includes a vascular surgeon, bringing greater experience in aortoiliac imaging, vascular access, and repair. We analyzed the role of a vascular surgeon during the selection process and throughout safe device delivery.

Perspectives on endovascular training in traditional 5+2 vascular surgery fellowship training programs.
In conclusion, incoming fellows in vascular surgery fellowship programs have high expectations of themselves, but may overestimate their actual pre-training endovascular skills. Fellows desire more structured endovascular training, which is not recognized by faculty. Endovascular simulators are valued, but may not be a significant draw in the match process. Evaluation of illness severity scoring systems and risk prediction in vascular intensive care admissions.
CONCLUSION: The good discrimination of these scoring systems indicates their value as an adjunct to clinical assessment but should not be used on an individual basis as a clinical decision-making tool. PMID: 26482428 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The clinical applicability of an automated plethysmographic determination of the ankle-brachial index after vascular surgery.
In conclusion based on this study, the automated ankle-brachial index-method seems not to be clinically applicable for measuring ankle-brachial index postoperatively in patients with vascular disease. PMID: 26787657 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Xenopericardial self-made tube grafts in infectious vascular reconstructions: Preliminary results of an easy and ready to use surgical approach.
CONCLUSION: Self-made bovine pericardial tube grafts can be crafted to almost any size and adjusted to complex anatomic requirements. The use was feasible in various situations and was associated with good preliminary results concerning patency and reinfection. PMID: 27059764 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

V-Aware: The Impact of Patient-Centric Vascular Awareness and Education Initiatives
Patients often have limited understanding of vascular risk factors, vascular health, and the various specialties that manage vascular disease. To better understand these gaps in patients' awareness and education, we conducted a survey-based study among patients who have been diagnosed with vascular disease.

The Current State of the Vascular Low-Frequency Disease Consortium
Outcomes and management are traditionally best studied through prospective randomized trials or national registries when applicable; however, when clinicians encounter patients with rare vascular pathologies they are often left relying on small-series or case reports in determining the best care. Such vascular anomalies do not go unreported, but due to their rarity it can be difficult for surgeons to conclude what treatment modality provides the least risk and/or best outcomes. To target the shortcoming of contemporary, evidenced-based treatment guidelines, the Vascular Low-Frequency Disease Consortium (VLFDC) was created ...

Quality improvement initiative: Preventative Surgical Site Infection Protocol in Vascular Surgery.
Conclusions Preventative measures, in the form of a standardized protocol, to decrease surgical site infections in the vascular surgery population are effective and necessary. Our data suggest that there may be benefit in the incorporation of MRSA and Gram-negative coverage as part of the Surgical Care Improvement Project perioperative guidelines. Increasing the Number of Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Positions Is Necessary to Address the Impending Shortage of Vascular Surgeons in the United States
During the next two decades, the demand for vascular surgeons is expected to far exceed the current supply. Whereas the number of vascular fellowship programs/positions is stable, the number of vascular residency programs/positions has expanded dramatically. We sought to evaluate the qualifications of this new workforce and its ability to meet future needs.

Incidence and Outcomes of Vascular Injury in the Setting of Tibial Plateau Fractures: A Single-Center Review
Concern for vascular injury in the setting of tibial plateau fractures is a common consultation to the vascular surgery service. There is no algorithm to predict the likelihood of vascular injury based on fracture type or injury characteristics. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of vascular injury in patients with various types of tibial plateau fractures and clinical characteristics on presentation to guide management.

Black patients present with more severe vascular disease and a greater burden of risk factors than white patients at time of major vascular intervention
Although many studies have demonstrated racial disparities after major vascular surgery, few have identified the reasons for these disparities, and those that did often lacked clinical granularity. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate differences in initial vascular intervention between black and white patients.

Pediatric Vascular Surgical Practice Patterns
Vascular surgeons infrequently care for pediatric patients. As such, variability in operative management and available hospital resources at free-standing children ’s hospitals (CH) may exist. The study aims were: 1) determine vascular surgeon comfort level with pediatric vascular surgery, and 2) determine variations in pediatric vascular surgery practice patterns.

Routine Use of Ultrasound Guidance in Femoral Arterial Access for Peripheral Vascular Intervention Decreases Groin Hematoma Rates in High-Volume Surgeons
There is a documented learning curve when adopting ultrasound guidance (UG) to aid vascular access. In the Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE), routine UG during percutaneous femoral artery access was shown to protect against the complication of groin hematoma. We sought to confirm this finding in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI), a dataset with a larger sample size and broader geographic distribution, and evaluate the effects of ultrasound usage and interventionalist volume on hematoma rates following peripheral vascular interventions (PVI).
