Alterations of learning and memory are accompanied by alterations in the expression of 5-HT receptors, glucocorticoid receptor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in different brain regions of an animal model of depression generated by neonatally male treatment with clomipramine in male rats
Behav Brain Res. 2023 Sep 14;455:114664. doi: 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114664. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDepressive illness has been associated with impaired cognitive processes accompanied by reduced neurotrophin levels, especially brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and dysfunctions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In addition, depression is characterized by a decreased functioning of the serotonergic system due to changes in the activity or expression of its receptors including, most significantly, 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, and 5-HT3 in brain regions that regulate mood, emotions, and memory, such as the prefr...

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for Depersonalization Derealization Disorder (DDD): a self-controlled cross-over study of waiting list vs. active treatment
We report on a clinical audit of 36 participants with a diagnosis of chronic DDD who were sequentially recruited from a specialist DDD National Health Service clinic in London, United Kingdom, and who completed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy specifically adapted for DDD. The sample population had a mean age of 38.7 years (s.d. = 13.4), 61% were male and 69% were of White ethnicity. Three outcomes were assessed (Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale [CDS], Beck Depression Inventory [BDI], and the Beck Anxiety Inventory [BAI]) at three time points in a naturalistic, self-controlled, cross-over design. Hierarchical longitudinal an...

Efficacy of Low-dose Olanzapine in Combination with Sertraline on Negative Symptoms and Psychosocial Functioning in Schizophrenia: A Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that low-dose OLA in combination with sertraline had clinically meaningful improvements not only in the negative and depressive symptoms but also in psychosocial functioning in patients with FE-SCH, while not affecting positive symptoms.PMID:37711125 | DOI:10.2174/1570159X21666230913152344

Emotion dynamics of clients with test anxiety before and after an imagery-based treatment
CONCLUSION: These results provide first evidence for the idea that emotion dynamics may be associated with response to treatment for TA. Furthermore, effective imagery-based treatments may be tied to changes within these dynamics.PMID:37714799 | DOI:10.1016/j.jbtep.2023.101909

Negative mood and optimism bias: An experimental investigation of sadness and belief updating
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that momentary fluctuations in mood affect how individuals integrate information to form beliefs.PMID:37714798 | DOI:10.1016/j.jbtep.2023.101910

The Combination of Depression and Obesity was Associated with Increased Incidence of Subsequent Total Knee Arthroplasty
CONCLUSION: The incidence of subsequent TKA was greatest for those with the combination of obesity and depression when compared to the Control group and those with individual diagnosis of obesity or depression.PMID:37714551 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-0367

Role of Minocycline as an Adjunct Neuroinflammatory Modulator in Treatment-Resistant Depression: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials
Conclusions: The results were inconsistent regarding the clinical and neuroprotective role of minocycline in TRD. More study is needed to clarify the pathophysiologic and clinical role of minocycline as an immunomodulator in TRD.Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2023;25(5):22r03467.Author affiliations are listed at the end of this article.PMID:37713730 | DOI:10.4088/PCC.22r03467

VPS13A knockdown impairs corticostriatal synaptic plasticity and locomotor behavior in a new mouse model of chorea-acanthocytosis
Neurobiol Dis. 2023 Sep 13:106292. doi: 10.1016/j.nbd.2023.106292. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc) is an inherited neurodegenerative movement disorder caused by VPS13A gene mutations leading to the absence of protein expression. The striatum is the most affected brain region in ChAc patients. However, the study of the VPS13A function in the brain has been poorly addressed. Here we generated a VPS13A knockdown (KD) model and aimed to elucidate the contribution of VPS13A to synaptic plasticity and neuronal communication in the corticostriatal circuit. First, we infected primary cortical neurons wit...

The relationship of food addiction with binge eating disorder and obesity: A network analysis study
Appetite. 2023 Sep 13:107037. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2023.107037. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFood addiction (FA) has been associated with binge eating disorder (BED) and obesity at varying levels of severity and treatment outcomes. Despite much debate and scientific interest in FA, the mechanisms that underlie its co-occurrence with both conditions are not yet well understood. In order to understand this relationship, this study explores FA in a clinical sample of individuals with BED and obesity using network analysis (NA). A total of 303 patients (151 with BED and 152 with obesity) completed a battery of tests that inve...

The SOFIA pilot study: assessing feasibility and fidelity of coordinated care to reduce excess mortality and increase quality of life in patients with severe mental illness in a general practice setting; a cluster-randomised pilot trial
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that delivering the coordinated care program in a fully powered trial in primary care is likely feasible. However, the recruitment methodology requires improvement to ensure sufficient recruitment and minimize selective inclusion.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The date of pilot trial protocol registration was 05/11/2020, and the registration number is NCT04618250.PMID:37715123 | PMC:PMC10504748 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02141-2

Mental Health Screening Differences in Non-English Speaking Patients: Results From a Retrospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Results highlight the inequities between the language groups that are probably the result of the challenges to access multilingual depression and anxiety screening instruments. Furthermore, providers may be prone to bias about who they think "needs" a mental health screening. We suggest that measures are implemented to ensure consistency in mental health screening regardless of a patients' preferred language.PMID:37714820 | PMC:PMC10504842 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231200304
