Efficacy and safety of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation on depression: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 20:1-36. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002052. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe aimed to investigate the effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation on the risk of developing depression, depressive symptoms and remission of depression. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to December 2022 to find randomized trials of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation in adults. We conducted random-effects meta-analyses to estimate standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for continuous outcomes and risk difference and 95%CI for binary outcomes. A total of 67 tr...

Investigating the potential effects of α-synuclein aggregation on susceptibility to chronic stress in a mouse Parkinson's disease model
CONCLUSIONS: Progressive bilateral α-syn aggregation might lead to compensatory activity increase and alterations in emotionally regulated behavior, without affecting stress susceptibility. Understanding how α-syn aggregation and degeneration in specific brain structures contribute to depression and anxiety in PD patients requires further investigation.PMID:37725330 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-023-00530-z

Turk Psikiyatri Derg. 2023 Fall;34(3):215-220. doi: 10.5080/u27015.ABSTRACTThe first episode of psychotic disorders often occurs in adolescence. Depressive symptoms are the most common symptoms in the prodromal period and the symptoms in this period are not specific to psychosis. Adolescence is a risky period in terms of suicidal behaviors. The risk of self-harm is further increased in the prodromal period and in the psychotic episode. Homicides in psychosis constitute a small part of all homicidal cases and homicidal thoughts have been associated with command hallucinations and delusions. In this article, an adolescent gi...

The Mediating Role of Early Maladaptive Schemas in the Relationship between Temperament and Depressive Symptoms
CONCLUSION: The findings supported the idea suggested by the schema theory that the temperament traits affect EMSs. We believe that these findings can support studies towards depression-prevention as well as the treatment of depressive individuals. Even without interfering with temperament characteristics of individuals, depressive symptoms might be reduced by working only with some of the EMSs.PMID:37724642 | DOI:10.5080/u26316

Exposure to Hazardous Substances and Their Health Effects Among Residents Living Near Three Industrial Waste Incinerators in Korea
CONCLUSION: The possibility of residents in Bugi-myeon being exposed to hazardous substances at incineration facilities cannot be ruled out. To prevent them from further exposure to hazardous substances, it is necessary to prohibit the expansion of additional incineration facilities in this area and to implement continuous monitoring projects for residents.PMID:37724494 | PMC:PMC10506904 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e289

The association between labour epidural analgesia and postpartum depression in primiparous patients: a historical cohort study
CONCLUSION: This historical cohort study found an association between LEA and PPD among primiparous patients who subsequently had a second pregnancy in the same province. The findings call into question the hypothesis that LEA decreases the risk for PPD and further illustrates the complexities of PPD.PMID:37726496 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02568-2

Delirium in Older Persons: Prevention, Evaluation, and Management
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Sep;108(3):278-287.ABSTRACTDelirium is an acute disturbance in attention, cognition, and awareness that fluctuates over time. Delirium is characterized by three subtypes: hyperactive, hypoactive, and mixed. It occurs in 11% to 25% of older adults in inpatient settings and is associated with a significant financial burden. Older age, multiple comorbidities, recent surgery, and polypharmacy are independent risk factors for delirium. The diagnosis is clinical but can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms with dementia and depression. The Confusion Assessment Method is a screening tool that is 94% t...

Peripartum Depression: Detection and Treatment
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Sep;108(3):267-272.ABSTRACTPeripartum depression is one of the most common disorders of pregnancy. The American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommend that pregnant patients be screened for depression with one of several validated tools and offered treatment with psychotherapy and medication. There are no validated tools available to identify who is at increased risk of...

Benzodiazepine Use Disorder: Common Questions and Answers
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Sep;108(3):260-266.ABSTRACTIn the United States, more than 30 million adults have reported taking a benzodiazepine within the past year. Misuse-use of a drug in a way that a doctor did not direct-accounts for 17.2% of all benzodiazepine use. Family physicians face challenges when balancing the patient's perceived benefits of benzodiazepines with known risks and lack of evidence supporting their use. Benzodiazepines cause significant central nervous system-related adverse effects including sedation, confusion, memory loss, depression, falls, fractures, and motor vehicle crashes. Factors that increase ...
