Healthy lifestyle promotion via digital self-help for mental health patients in primary care: a pilot study including an embedded randomized recruitment trial
CONCLUSIONS: Recruitment routines seemed to be decisive for reaching as many patients as possible. The relatively low rate of unhealthy lifestyle behaviors and small effect sizes suggests that the intervention may only suit patients at risk.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03691116 (01/10/2018), focusing on the embedded trial. Retrospectively registered for the first clinic and prospectively for the second clinic.PMID:37728142 | DOI:10.1017/S146342362300049X

The Association Between Depression and Substance Use Among Primary Care Patients With Comorbid Medical and Behavioral Health Conditions
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that substance use disorder is associated with depression severity cross-sectionally and over time. Primary care clinics and health systems might consider implementing substance use screening in addition to the more common screening strategies for depression. Especially for patients with severe depression or those who do not respond to frontline depression treatments, the undermining presence of a substance use disorder should be explored.PMID:37728047 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231200302

Association between frailty and depression: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study
Sci Adv. 2023 Sep 22;9(38):eadi3902. doi: 10.1126/sciadv.adi3902. Epub 2023 Sep 20.ABSTRACTFrailty and depression were linked in observational studies, but the causality remains ambiguous. We intended to explore it using Mendelian randomization (MR). We obtained frailty genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from UK Biobank and TwinGen meta-analysis, and depression GWAS data from Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) and FinnGen (respectively recorded as PD and FD). We performed univariable and multivariable-adjusted MR with adjustments for body mass index (BMI) and physical activity (PA). Frailty was significantly asso...

Health of people with selected citizenships in Germany: prevalence of non-communicable diseases and associated social as well as migration-related factors
DISCUSSION: Given the importance of subjective sense of belonging to the society in Germany and self-reported experience of discrimination for the health outcomes studied, the results point to health inequalities among people with selected citizenships that may indicate mechanisms of social exclusion.PMID:37728772 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-023-03767-4

Association between offensive behaviors and burnout and depression risks in health workers
CONCLUSION: the occurrence of offensive behaviors in health work is frequent and characteristic and burnout and depressive symptoms respectively increased 4.73 and 1.05 times the chances of workers suffering these offensive behaviors in the work environment.PMID:37729247 | DOI:10.1590/1518-8345.6683.3986

Increased hippocampal CREB phosphorylation after retrieval of remote contextual fear memories in Carioca High-conditioned Freezing rats
Neurobiol Learn Mem. 2023 Sep 18:107828. doi: 10.1016/j.nlm.2023.107828. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe participation of the hippocampal formation in consolidation and reconsolidation of contextual fear memories has been widely recognized and known to be dependent on the activation of the cAMP response element (CRE) binding protein (CREB) pathway. Recent findings have challenged the prevailing view that over time contextual fear memories migrate to neocortical circuits and no longer require the hippocampus for retrieval of remote fearful memories. It has also recently been found that this brain structure is important fo...

Ketamine: Mechanisms and Relevance to Treatment of Depression
Annu Rev Med. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1146/annurev-med-051322-120608. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMajor depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of suicide in the world. Monoamine-based antidepressant drugs are a primary line of treatment for this mental disorder, although the delayed response and incomplete efficacy in some patients highlight the need for improved therapeutic approaches. Over the past two decades, ketamine has shown rapid onset with sustained (up to several days) antidepressant effects in patients whose MDD has not responded to conventional antidepressant drugs. Recent preclinical studies have started ...

Submandibular suction lipectomy and single-hole inflator-free endoscopic thyroidectomy with a submental approach: a new surgical technique
Gland Surg. 2023 Jul 31;12(7):974-981. doi: 10.21037/gs-22-624. Epub 2023 Jun 30.ABSTRACTWe have successfully carried out single-hole inflator-free endoscopic thyroidectomy through a submental approach, which has the advantages of less trauma, fewer complications, and hidden incisions. However, for patients with submandibular fat accumulation, submental incisions are not easy to hide, which directly affects the cosmetic effect. We developed a new surgical strategy "submandibular suction lipectomy and single-hole inflator-free endoscopic thyroidectomy with a submental approach" for these patients. We initially used submandi...

In silico Strategy: A Promising Implement in the Development of Multitarget Drugs against Neurodegenerative Diseases
Curr Top Med Chem. 2023 Aug 31. doi: 10.2174/1568026623666230811113231. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMulti-target drug development (MTDD) is the demand of the recent era, especially in the case of multi-factorial conditions such as cancer, depression, neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), etc. The MTDD approaches have many advantages; avoidance of drug-drug interactions, predictable pharmacokinetic profile, and less drug resistance. The wet lab practice in MTDD is very challenging for the researchers, and the chances of late-stage failure are obvious. Identification of an appropriate target (Target fishing) is another challen...
