Interventions to help patients withdraw from depression drugs: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: The true proportion of patients on depression drugs who can stop safely without relapse is likely considerably higher than the 50% we found.PMID:37718853 | DOI:10.3233/JRS-230011

Osteoporosis and fracture as risk factors for self-harm and suicide: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Patients with vertebral fractures, a risk potential factor for suicide, may benefit from clinical case finding for mood disorders with personalised primary care management. However, because of the limited number and quality of studies and mixed findings, further examination of these associations is warranted.PMID:37722857 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0035

The role of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness in passive suicide ideation among Latinx and Black youth
CONCLUSION: These findings confirm the importance of examining the IPTS constructs and their relationship to passive SI in diverse populations. The relationship between TB and SI in Latinx and Black youth suggests it may be an important target for suicide prevention.PMID:37720934 | DOI:10.1111/sltb.13003

Specificity, frequency, and intent: Multiple characteristics of adolescents' suicide plan correlate with their history of suicidal behavior
CONCLUSIONS: It may not only be whether, but how, adolescents plan for suicide that relates to their tendency to engage in SB.PMID:37720928 | DOI:10.1111/sltb.13002

Paved with good intentions: How our systems intersect to create health disparities for multiply marginalized youth
CONCLUSIONS: This piece highlights the inaccessibility of dialectical behavior therapy for multiply marginalized youth, and outlines suggestions for improving access to high-quality care for minoritized youth engaging in suicidal behavior.PMID:37718961 | DOI:10.1111/sltb.13001

The heterogeneity of metabolic syndrome presentation and challenges this causes in its pharmacological management. A narrative review focusing on principal risk modifiers
Expert Rev Clin Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1080/17512433.2023.2259306. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Metabolic syndrome (MetS), i.e. the cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors comprising visceral obesity, impaired glucose metabolism, arterial hypertension and atherogenic dyslipidemia, is prevalent globally and exacts a heavy toll on health care expenditures.AREAS COVERED: The pathophenotypes of individual traits of the MetS in adults are discussed first, with strong emphasis on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and sex differences. Next, I discuss recent studies on phenotypic and outcome heteroge...

Programmed Cell Death in Unicellular Versus Multicellular Organisms
Annu Rev Genet. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1146/annurev-genet-033123-095833. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProgrammed cell death (self-induced) is intrinsic to all cellular life forms, including unicellular organisms. However, cell death research has focused on animal models to understand cancer, degenerative disorders, and developmental processes. Recently delineated suicidal death mechanisms in bacteria and fungi have revealed ancient origins of animal cell death that are intertwined with immune mechanisms, allaying earlier doubts that self-inflicted cell death pathways exist in microorganisms. Approximately 20 mammalian death...

Endocrine disruptors in Adansonia digitata (Linn) extract induce alteration of female Wistar rats' oestrous cycle, hormone and lipid profiles
CONCLUSION: AAMF fraction of A. digitata (L) root bark disrupts the endocrine activity in female Wistar rats. The oleic acid component of the AAMF fraction may be responsible for modulating the activities of reproductive hormones. The authors recommend further studies to ascertain the significance of Adansonia digitata extract's oleic acid in regulating the female reproductive cycle.PMID:37722461 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygcen.2023.114385

Assessing the association between probable posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and quality of life among emergency service workers using path analysis
CONCLUSION: Active coping in response to stressful situations is important for maintaining good mental health among emergency service workers. Active coping and social support may strengthen resilience, and resilience may improve QOL. Screening for mental health and QOL should include simultaneous assessment of stress-coping, social support, and resilience. Although the findings of this cross-sectional study are important, it could not confirm a causal relationship between PTSD and QOL.PMID:37718827 | DOI:10.3233/WOR-220551

The roles of readiness and dosage in predicting outcomes of a mindful sport performance enhancement intervention with U.S. college student-athletes
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Sep 15:102539. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102539. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch suggests that Mindfulness- and Acceptance-Based Interventions (MABIs) can impact sport performance and performance-relevant factors, though questions remain regarding when and for whom MABIs are effective. Specifically, inquiries into intervention engagement (i.e., dosage), potentially impacted by participant readiness, are needed. The present study utilized a non-randomized control group design with U.S. collegiate athletes to investigate MABI effects. Four teams from two universities in the Appalachian r...

Potential value of Interleukin-6 as a diagnostic biomarker in human MDD and the antidepressant effect of its receptor antagonist tocilizumab in lipopolysaccharide-challenged rats
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Sep 15;124(Pt B):110903. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110903. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDepression is a common mental disease with disastrous effect on the health and wealth globally. Focusing on the role for inflammation and immune activation in the pathogenesis of depression, many tries have been taken into effect targeting at the blockage of inflammatory cytokines, among which interleukin- 6 (IL-6) and its receptor antagonist tocilizumab attracts more attention, with inconsistent findings. Moderate to severe depressive disorder (MSDD) patients were enrolled and the serum concentrations of IL-...

Improvement of hedonic perception of odors as a marker of treatment response to Escitalopram - Olfactory changes through an open-label antidepressant trial
Braz J Psychiatry. 2023 Sep 17. doi: 10.47626/1516-4446-2023-3107. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study is to assess olfactory functions (Threshold, identification and hedonic valence) of depressed subjects before and after an 8-week Escitalopram trial, and compare the results of responders and non-responders to antidepressant. Fifty-two depressed subjects were recruited. Participants received Escitalopram with two evaluation visits, at baseline (V0) and at week 8 (V8). They were categorized as responders (MADRS score reduction of >50%) and non-responders to treatment. Participants were evaluated with the...
