Chronotype, Unhealthy Lifestyle, and Diabetes Risk in Middle-Aged U.S. Women : A Prospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: Middle-aged nurses with an evening chronotype were more likely to report unhealthy lifestyle behaviors and had increased diabetes risk compared with those with a morning chronotype. Accounting for BMI, physical activity, diet, and other modifiable lifestyle factors attenuated much but not all of the increased diabetes risk.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Institutes of Health.PMID:37696036 | DOI:10.7326/M23-0728

Effect of Metformin Versus Placebo on New Primary Cancers in Canadian Cancer Trials Group MA.32: A Secondary Analysis of a Phase III Randomized Double-Blind Trial in Early Breast Cancer
J Clin Oncol. 2023 Sep 11:JCO2300296. doi: 10.1200/JCO.23.00296. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClinical trials frequently include multiple end points that mature at different times. The initial report, typically based on the primary end point, may be published when key planned coprimary or secondary analyses are not yet available. Clinical trial updates provide an opportunity to disseminate additional results from studies, published in JCO or elsewhere, for which the primary end point has already been reported.Metformin has been associated with lower cancer risk in epidemiologic and preclinical research. Accuracy of a Glycerol Dehydrogenase Assay for Ethylene Glycol Detection
CONCLUSIONS: The GDH assay provides a sensitive and specific method for the detection and quantification of EG that is comparable to a GC-based method. More widespread use of this rapid, inexpensive assay could improve the care of patients with suspected toxic alcohol exposure. Further study is needed to evaluate the test performance in real-time patient treatment decisions.PMID:37695470 | DOI:10.1007/s13181-023-00967-x

Identification of volatile compounds contained in the therapeutic essential oils from < em > Pogostemon cablin, Melaleuca leucadendra < /em > , and < em > Mentha piperita < /em > and their purified fractions
J Adv Pharm Technol Res. 2023 Jul-Sep;14(3):208-212. doi: 10.4103/JAPTR.JAPTR_161_23. Epub 2023 Jul 28.ABSTRACTPogostemon cablin, Melaleuca leucadendra, and Mentha piperita are three aromatic plants that have been reported to produce a high yield of volatile components with medicinal and therapeutic properties. This present study aimed to perform qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis on the volatile components present in the aforementioned aromatic plants. Essential oils from P. cablin and M. leucadendra were obtained from community-based enterprises in Aceh Province, Indonesia. The essential oils were further purifie...

Kartogenin-loaded polyvinyl alcohol/nano-hydroxyapatite composite hydrogel promotes tendon-bone healing in rabbits after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
In conclusion, these results suggest that the KGN/PVA/n-HA scaffolds can facilitate tendon-bone healing after ACL reconstruction and might be considered novel hydrogel biomaterials in cartilage tissue engineering.PMID:37694883 | DOI:10.1002/jbm.a.37605

The influence of various endocrine disruptors on the reproductive system
This article presents the current state of knowledge of the effect of EDCs and additional factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and cannabis on the gonads. The article is an overview of the impact of EDCs and their mechanism of action, with particular emphasis on gonads, based on databases such as PubMed, EMBASE and Google Scholar, and Web of Science available until May 2022. The impact of human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) is not fully understood, but it has been shown that phthalates show a negative correlation in anti-androgenic activity in the case of men and women for the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH). Smokin...

Alcohol-induced Conformational Changes and Thermodynamic Signatures in the Binding of Polyphenols to Proline-rich Salivary Proteins
Chemistry. 2023 Sep 11:e202302384. doi: 10.1002/chem.202302384. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe first contact of polyphenols (tannins) with the human body occurs in the mouth, where they are known to interact with proline-rich proteins (PRPs). These interactions are important at a sensory level, especially for the development of astringency, but affect also various other biochemical processes. Employing thermodynamic measurements, fluorescence and CD spectroscopy, we investigated the binding process of the prototypical polyphenol ellagic acid (EA) to different IB-PRPs and BSA, also in the presence of ethanol, which is kn...

Dietary habits among snus users: a population-based cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: We observed that snus users had an unhealthier diet than never tobacco users. Future studies on the association between snus use and health outcomes should, therefore, consider diet as a potential confounder.PMID:37691745 | PMC:PMC10492228 | DOI:10.29219/fnr.v67.9537

Wound healing potential of < em > Acacia catechu < /em > in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice using < em > in  vivo < /em > and < em > in silico < /em > approach
CONCLUSION: Phytochemically, EAC showed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and saponins, while the content of (-) epicatechin was reported to be 7.81% w/w. The maximum healing of wounds (91.84 ± 1.10%) was observed in mice treated with a combination of both topical (10% gel) and oral (extract at 200 mg/kg) followed by topically and orally treated groups respectively after 14 days of treatment. These groups also showed significant restoration of altered biochemical parameters, antioxidant enzymes and cytokines. The molecular docking studies confirmed the role of (-) epicatechin in stabilizing the huma...

Clinical, Gender, Socioeconomic Characteristics and Outcomes of Individuals Receiving Hepatitis B Treatment in Ethiopia: 18-Month Follow-Up
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Sep 11:tpmd230236. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0236. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is a lack of real-world data on hepatitis B (HBV) treatment in Africa. We conducted a single-center 18-month prospective cohort study in Ethiopia to understand clinical, laboratory, and demographic variables associated with HBV treatment. One hundred fifty HBV-positive patients were included: 51 on treatment, 99 with no treatment. Median age was similar between groups. Those on treatment were more likely to be male (86%), report higher coffee intake (90% versus 70%, P < 0.05), lower khat intake (0% versus 9%, P = 0...
