Proximity hybridization regulated dual-mode ratiometric biosensor for estriol detection in pregnancy serum
Anal Chim Acta. 2023 Oct 16;1278:341689. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2023.341689. Epub 2023 Aug 4.ABSTRACTSensitive and accurate determination of estriol level is vastly significant for the fetal growth and development. Herein, we constructed a dual-mode ratiometric biosensor for estriol assay combining the competitive immunoreaction, proximity hybridization with a two-step resonance energy transfer (RET) strategy. Estriol antibody and goat anti-rabbit antibody labeled DNA probes (Ab1-DNA1-Pt NPs and Ab2-DNA2) both hybridized with silver nanoclusters labeled DNA strands (H1-Ag NCs). Thus, the formed proximity hybridization enabled ...

The role of a multidisciplinary team in managing variants of uncertain clinical significance in prenatal genetic diagnosis
CONCLUSION: In this study three out of nine VUS could be re-classified as likely pathogenic after clinical follow-up. In order to protect pregnant couples from the burden of uncertain results, the genetic professionals have to take the responsibility to limit the reporting of VUS. This can be done not only by automated filtering of data, by following professional guidelines and by building standardized decision flows, but also by discussing individual cases considering personal situations and the involved disease and by sharing professional experience and responsibility in a multidisciplinary prenatal team setting.PMID:377...

Risk factors for postpartum urinary incontinence: The impact of early-onset and late-onset Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in a nested case-control study
CONCLUSION: After a planned C-section, we observed a 6-18 months postpartum UI higher occurrence after GDM, either in early-onset GDM or late-onset GDM. In addition, being overweight (BMI > 25) among women with early-onset GDM was associated with postpartum UI.PMID:37708658 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2023.09.007

Outcomes following elective cerclage versus ultrasound surveillance in women with one prior preterm event
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, this study shows that in women with one prior preterm event, both history-indicated cerclage and ultrasound surveillance are appropriate management options. The majority of women undergoing ultrasound surveillance did not require a cerclage and so avoided the potential perioperative complications of cerclage insertion. However, those that did require an ultrasound-indicated cerclage were at high risk of preterm birth so should be followed up closely to enable adequate preterm birth preparation. Further prospective studies comparing history indicated cerclage and US surveillance in women with one...

Single cell insights into development of the bovine placenta †
Biol Reprod. 2023 Sep 14:ioad123. doi: 10.1093/biolre/ioad123. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA central determinant of pregnancy success is proper development of the conceptus (embryo/fetus and associated extraembryonic membranes including the placenta). Although the gross morphology and histology of the bovine placenta has been well studied, the cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating placenta development and trophoblast differentiation and function remain essentially undefined. Here single cell transcriptome (scRNA-seq) analysis was performed on the day 17 bovine conceptus and chorion of day 24, 30 and 50 conceptuses...

Temporal trends and predictors of gestational exposure to organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers
We examined biomarker concentrations, their variability during pregnancy, and temporal trends over the study period. In addition, we identified sociodemographic and pregnancy characteristics associated with biomarker concentrations. Analyses were conducted using both the within-subject pregnancy geometric means and biomarker concentrations measured at individual study visits.RESULTS: Five OPE biomarkers were detected in at least 60% of the study participants. Biomarkers were not strongly correlated with one another and intraclass correlation coefficients, measuring within-subject variability during pregnancy, ranged from 0...

Prenatal Diagnosis and Molecular Cytogenetic Analyses of a de novo Deletion on Chromosome 4p16.3p15.33
Altern Ther Health Med. 2023 Sep 15:AT8915. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) (OMIM 194190) is a contiguous gene syndrome with an estimated prevalence of around 1 in 50,000 births. The syndrome is caused by the deletion of a critical region (Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome Critical region-WHSCR) on chromosome 4p16.3. Its core features are typical facial gestalt, growth retardation, intellectual disability, developmental delay, and seizures. Prenatal diagnosis of WHS helps clinicians and parents make informed decisions about pregnancy management. In this research, a 31-year-old woman (gravida 1, para 0) ...

Establishment and Validation of Risk Prediction Model for Postpartum Hemorrhage for Pregnant Women ≥35 Years of Age in Natural Delivery
CONCLUSIONS: The PPH risk-prediction model for vaginal delivery for pregnant women ≥35 years of age showed that a greater age, pregnancy-induced hypertension, a lower prelabor FIB, a longer third stage of labor, and a higher birth weight for the newborn were significantly related to the incidence of PPH and that its use could be clinically helpful.PMID:37708560

Music as a health resource in pregnancy: A cross-sectional survey study of women and partners in Ireland
CONCLUSION: This study is the first to explore the experience and perspectives of women and partners in Ireland on using music during pregnancy. The findings highlight the need for more music-based resources and education on this topic and suggests an openness amongst women and partners towards the implementation of music therapy in maternity care to promote perinatal health and wellbeing.PMID:37708586 | DOI:10.1016/j.midw.2023.103811

Maternal impacts of pre-conceptional glyphosate exposure
Toxicol Appl Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 12:116692. doi: 10.1016/j.taap.2023.116692. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMaternal glyphosate (GLY) impacts remain unclear despite associations between urinary GLY and birth outcomes. Whether maternal pre-conceptional GLY exposure would have phenotypic and molecular impacts in the dam and offspring was tested. Female C57BL6 mice (6 wk) were exposed to saline (CT; n = 20) or GLY (2 mg/kg; n = 20) per os five d per week for 20 wk. Females were housed with males and on gestation day (GD) 14, divided into: CT non-pregnant (CNP), CT pregnant (CP), GLY non-pregnant (GNP), GLY pregnant (GP). Anoth...

A 10-Year Observational Study on Twin Pregnancy: Role of Fetal Sex Pairing on Obstetric Outcome
Twin Res Hum Genet. 2023 Sep 14:1-7. doi: 10.1017/thg.2023.38. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFetal sex contributes to the determination of obstetric outcome, as pregnancies carrying male babies seem to have an increased risk of maternal-fetal complications. Most studies have been conducted on singleton pregnancies, whereas less evidence is available for twins. A 10-year retrospective observational study was conducted on a cohort of 1180 women with twin pregnancy delivered at a single tertiary hospital. Clinical data on maternal characteristics, and obstetric and neonatal outcomes were collected, and the analysis was perfor...

Dispensary Staff Perceptions About the Benefits, Risks, and Safety of Cannabis for Medical Purposes
CONCLUSIONS: Cannabis dispensary staff generally view medical cannabis as beneficial and low-risk. However, improvements in dispensary staff training, an increased role for certifying clinicians, and interventions to reduce dispensary staff concerns (e.g., cost, judgment) may improve evidence-based staff recommendations to patients seeking medical cannabis.PMID:37706479 | DOI:10.1177/08897077231186677
