Polystyrene micro- and nanoplastics cause placental dysfunction in mice1
In this study, we investigated the placental and fetal hemodynamic responses to plastics exposure in mice using high-frequency ultrasound. Healthy, pregnant CD-1 dams were given either 106 ng/L of 5 μm polystyrene MPs or 106 ng/L of 50 nm polystyrene NPs in drinking water throughout gestation and compared with controls. Maternal exposure to both MPs and NPs resulted in evidence of placental dysfunction that was highly dependent on the particle size. The umbilical artery blood flow increased by 48% in the MP-exposed group and decreased by 25% in the NP-exposed group compared to controls (p < 0.05). The MP- and NP-expose...

Low progesterone concentration in early pregnancy is detrimental to conceptus development and pregnancy outcome in horses
In conclusion, reduced progesterone concentration in the early luteal phase leads to delayed conceptus growth beyond placentation and increased pregnancy loss.PMID:37725863 | DOI:10.1016/j.anireprosci.2023.107334

Thyroglobulin antibodies in women with recurrent pregnancy loss: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions: Women with RPL were significantly more often TgAb-positive than women without RPL. Although there was a lack of studies reporting prospective outcomes, the findings of this study support the significance of awareness about the strong association between RPL and thyroid autoimmunity.PMID:37725583 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0292

Prediction of large-for-gestational age at 36  weeks' gestation: two-dimensional vs three-Dimensional vs magnetic resonance imaging
CONCLUSION: At 36 WG, MRI performs better than 2D-US and 3D-US in predicting birthweight > 95th percentile at birth, especially in patients at high-risk for macrosomia, while 2D-US and 3D-US are comparable. For low-risk patients, the three modalities perform similarly. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.PMID:37725758 | DOI:10.1002/uog.27485

Externally validated prediction models for pre-eclampsia: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Existing externally validated prediction models for any-, early-, and late-onset pre-eclampsia have limited discrimination and calibration performance with inconsistent input variables. The triple test FMF model had excellent discrimination performance in predicting preterm pre-eclampsia in numerous settings, but the inclusion of specialised biomarkers may limit feasibility and implementation outside of high-resource settings. The association between labour epidural analgesia and postpartum depression in primiparous patients: a historical cohort study
CONCLUSION: This historical cohort study found an association between LEA and PPD among primiparous patients who subsequently had a second pregnancy in the same province. The findings call into question the hypothesis that LEA decreases the risk for PPD and further illustrates the complexities of PPD.PMID:37726496 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02568-2

Peripartum Depression: Detection and Treatment
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Sep;108(3):267-272.ABSTRACTPeripartum depression is one of the most common disorders of pregnancy. It has a higher morbidity and mortality risk than any other condition affecting pregnant people. The American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommend that pregnant patients be screened for depression with one of several validated tools and offered treatment with psychotherapy and medication. There are no validated tools available to identify who is at increased risk of...

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Update on Screening, Diagnosis, and Management
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Sep;108(3):249-258.ABSTRACTGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common condition of pregnancy with increasing prevalence in the United States. GDM increases risks of complications, including operative delivery, hypertensive disorders, shoulder dystocia, fetal macrosomia, large-for-gestational-age infants, neonatal hypoglycemia, and neonatal respiratory distress. In patients who are overweight or obese, prepregnancy weight loss and lifestyle modifications during pregnancy may prevent GDM. First-trimester screening can identify preexisting diabetes and early-onset GDM for prompt implementation of g...
