A foot structure study of new arch flexibility grading system based on three-dimensional arch volume
CONCLUSION: In cavus, rectus, and planus, different AVF accounts different percentage, but the difference is not statistically significant. AVF is evenly distributed in the arches of the feet at different heights. We further found the relationship between AHF and AVF is not significant. As a three-dimensional index, AVF may be able to describe the flexibility of the arch more comprehensively than AHF.PMID:37716873 | DOI:10.1016/j.cjtee.2023.09.002

Three-dimensional Anatomy of the Velopharyngeal Muscles in the Cleft Palate
CONCLUSIONS: With the help of Micro-CT technology, detailed anatomical features and the relationship between muscles could be visualized. In the specimen with cleft palate, muscles in the soft palate were associated with the pharyngeal muscles, which formed the 3D "velopharyngeal muscles complex." These findings provide anatomical evidence for muscle reconstruction in cleft palate repair.PMID:37715628 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231176867

Take a walk on the KRAB side
Trends Genet. 2023 Sep 14:S0168-9525(23)00185-3. doi: 10.1016/j.tig.2023.08.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCanonical Krüppel-associated box (KRAB)-containing zinc finger proteins (KZFPs) act as major repressors of transposable elements (TEs) via the KRAB-mediated recruitment of the heterochromatin scaffold KRAB-associated protein (KAP)1. KZFP genes emerged some 420 million years ago in the last common ancestor of coelacanth, lungfish, and tetrapods, and dramatically expanded to give rise to lineage-specific repertoires in contemporary species paralleling their TE load and turnover. However, the KRAB domain displays se...

Dynamics of γ-aminobutyric acid concentration in the human brain in response to short visual stimulation
CONCLUSION: The quick response of the observed GABA concentration to the short stimulus is most likely due to a release of GABA from vesicles followed by its packaging back into vesicles.PMID:37715877 | DOI:10.1007/s10334-023-01118-7

A Case of Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma in Neck Lymph Nodes Without Primary Tumor in Thyroid Gland
We report the case of a 63-year-old male who had a left neck level II palpable mass. A left cervical mass had previously undergone 2 central needle biopsies, but only atypical cells had been identified. His prior medical history included surgical treatment for prostate cancer 11 years ago. There was no suspicious primary tumor in the endoscopic examination. After the excisional biopsy, the pathologic finding was metastatic papillary carcinoma from the thyroid, and there were no aberrant findings in the thyroid sonography. The patient underwent a complete thyroidectomy, bilateral central neck dissection (CND), and left leve...

Cardiac Insulin Resistance in Subjects With Metabolic Syndrome Traits and Early Subclinical Atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: Apparently healthy individuals without cardiac 18F-FDG uptake have higher HOMA-IR and higher prevalence of MetS traits, cardiovascular risk factors, and early atherosclerosis. An improvement in cardiometabolic profile is associated with the recovery of myocardial 18F-FDG uptake at follow-up.PMID:37713581 | DOI:10.2337/dc23-0871

Guillain-Barr é syndrome in patients dying with COVID-19 in Italy: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Although the mechanism of GBS onset is still unclear in COVID-19, fatal cases may be more frequent than other virus-related GBS, so that strictly monitoring in high-risk patients could dramatically decrease the mortality of GBS.PMID:37712236 | DOI:10.4415/ANN_23_03_04

Fluoro-edenite non-neoplastic diseases in Biancavilla (Sicily, Italy): pleural plaques and/or pneumoconiosis?
CONCLUSIONS: Asbestosis-like features were substantiated in Biancavilla residents without known occupational exposure to asbestos. Further studies to estimate population respiratory health are required. Experimental studies on the fibrogenic potential of fluoro-edenite are needed.PMID:37712235 | DOI:10.4415/ANN_23_03_03

Assessment of early anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity using segmental strain of cardiac magnetic resonance compared with global strain and functional parameters: an animal study
CONCLUSIONS: Based on experimental evidence, the peak segmental strain of the apical lateral and anterior wall, as determined by CMR, demonstrated an earlier detection of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity compared to peak global strain and cardiac function.PMID:37711795 | PMC:PMC10498243 | DOI:10.21037/qims-22-1374
