Does who you live with matter for your health? The influence of partners' socioeconomic characteristics on self-rated health in Norway
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that health is affected by the resources (or lack thereof) in one's immediate networks. To reduce social inequalities in health, health personnel might customise interactions to account for household resources. Such knowledge could also be used in health-promoting activities to enhance participation and health competency.PMID:37705349 | DOI:10.1177/14034948231197453

The effect of postoperative hepatic fibrosis factors on morbidity in mitral valve replacement surgery: A single center ten years' experience
CONCLUSION: The AST/ALT ratio, which has been shown to be a predictor of cardiovascular mortality in various studies, was not useful in predicting mortality and morbidity in our study. However, a high FIB-4 index, another hepatic fibrosis index, was found to be associated with increased perioperative bleeding, duration of mechanical ventilation, and cardiac intensive care unit stay, which are important criteria in the prediction of morbidity in cardiovascular surgery.PMID:37706385 | DOI:10.4103/aca.aca_55_22

Three ways of organising general practitioner's medical services in sheltered housing. A qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Residents in round-the-clock staffed sheltered housing constitute a varied group that generally has substantial medical assistance needs. Given that many residents lack autonomy to manage their own care needs and make decisions, models with fewer GPs like models ii and iii seem to provide a better medical professional offer. Moving towards such an organising of the medical services for sheltered housing residents could have implications for GPs' workload and competence needs. Future studies are needed to test models and assess implications.PMID:37706637 | DOI:10.1080/02813432.2023.2256381

Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) modified cellulose nanocrystals and their PBAT-based nanocomposites
In this study, chemical modification of CNC through grafting poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) with various degrees was implemented. Wettability of the modified CNCs (mCNCs) were controlled and their structure was characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The nanocomposites of polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) with 3 wt% CNC and mCNC were prepared using an internal melt mixer. To differentiate the effects of CNC and PGMA mole...

Effect of the magnetic core in alginate/gum composite on adsorption of divalent copper, cadmium, and lead ions in the aqueous system
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 12:126884. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126884. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe change of composition of an adsorbent material has been widely used as a method to increase its adsorption capacity, particularly concerning adsorbents made of polysaccharides. Introducing magnetic adsorbents into contaminated water treatment systems is a highly promising strategy, as it promotes the metal ions removal from water. Considering this, gum Arabic (GA) was associated with alginate (Alg), when magnetite nanoparticles were present or absent, to produce beads that were utilised to take up Cu(II), Cd(II),...

Differences in diffusion tensor imaging parameters of brain white matter tracts between patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 and type 2 - a retrospective single-centre study
CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate diffuse disintegration of white matter pathways in DM patients, especially in the DM1 group. The damage to all types of fibres (association, commissural, and projection) may explain the diversity of clinical symptoms, which were more severe in the DM1 group of patients than in the DM2 group.CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: DTI in patients with DM may help us to understand the neural mechanisms underlying brain involvement during the disease. In future, it may help to identify biomarkers for disease progression and treatment response.PMID:37706668 | DOI:10.5603/pjnns.95587

Routine MRI Among Patients With a Suspected Scaphoid Fracture Risks Overdiagnosis
CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of signal changes that are distracting and potentially misleading, the low prevalence of signal changes that clearly represent a scaphoid fracture, and the low pretest odds of a true fracture among patients with a suspected scaphoid fracture illustrate that routine MRI of suspected scaphoid fractures carries a notable risk of overdiagnosis and potential overtreatment. Two alternative strategies are supported by preliminary evidence and merit additional attention: more-selective use of MRI in people deemed at higher risk according to a clinical prediction rule and strategies for involving the...
