A morphometric approach to morphology analysis of palatal rugae in sibling groups
This study aimed to determine whether there are significant differences in 3D palatal rugae shape between siblings. Digital casts representing 25 pairs of full siblings from each group, male-male (MM), female-female (FF), and female-male (FM), were digitized and transferred to a GM system. The palatal rugae were determined, quantified, and visualized using GMM computational tools with MorphoJ software (University of Manchester). Principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical variates analysis (CVA) were employed to analyze palatal rugae shape variability and distinguish between sibling groups based on shape. Additionally...

Differences in whole-brain metabolism are associated with the expression of genes related to neurovascular unit integrity and synaptic plasticity in temporal lobe epilepsy
DISCUSSION: Our findings, combined with the analysis of neuroimaging and transcriptional data, suggest that genes related to NVU integrity and synaptic plasticity may drive alterations to brain metabolism that mediate the genetic risk of TLE.PMID:37707571 | DOI:10.1007/s00259-023-06433-8

Three ways of organising general practitioner's medical services in sheltered housing. A qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Residents in round-the-clock staffed sheltered housing constitute a varied group that generally has substantial medical assistance needs. Given that many residents lack autonomy to manage their own care needs and make decisions, models with fewer GPs like models ii and iii seem to provide a better medical professional offer. Moving towards such an organising of the medical services for sheltered housing residents could have implications for GPs' workload and competence needs. Future studies are needed to test models and assess implications.PMID:37706637 | DOI:10.1080/02813432.2023.2256381

Cerebellar volumes and the  intrinsic cerebellar network in patients with obstructive sleep apnea
CONCLUSION: This study established that patients with OSA exhibited decreased total cerebellar volumes and particularly reduced volumes in subdivisions such as the left lobule VIIB compared to healthy controls. These findings suggest potential involvement of the cerebellum in the underlying mechanisms of OSA.PMID:37710027 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-023-02916-y

White matter hyperintensity volume modifies the association between CSF vascular inflammatory biomarkers and regional FDG-PET along the Alzheimer's disease continuum
Neurobiol Aging. 2023 Aug 10;132:1-12. doi: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2023.08.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn older adults with abnormal levels of Alzheimer's disease neuropathology, lower cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels are associated with lower [¹⁸F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) signal, but whether this association is (1) specific to VEGF or broadly driven by vascular inflammation, or (2) modified by vascular risk (e.g., white matter hyperintensities [WMHs]) remains unknown. To address this and build upon our past work, we evaluated whether 5...

The effect of postoperative hepatic fibrosis factors on morbidity in mitral valve replacement surgery: A single center ten years' experience
CONCLUSION: The AST/ALT ratio, which has been shown to be a predictor of cardiovascular mortality in various studies, was not useful in predicting mortality and morbidity in our study. However, a high FIB-4 index, another hepatic fibrosis index, was found to be associated with increased perioperative bleeding, duration of mechanical ventilation, and cardiac intensive care unit stay, which are important criteria in the prediction of morbidity in cardiovascular surgery.PMID:37706385 | PMC:PMC10284468 | DOI:10.4103/aca.aca_55_22

Phasic and tonic muscle synergies are different in number, structure and sparseness
This study aims at testing whether phasic and tonic components are generated by distinct phasic and tonic synergies or by the same set of synergies with phasic and tonic activation coefficients. The study also aims at characterizing the differences between the phasic and the tonic synergies. Using a comprehensive mapping of upper-limb point-to-point movements, synergies were extracted from phasic and tonic EMG signal separately, estimating the tonic components with a linear ramp model. The goodness of reconstruction (R2) as a function of the number of synergies was compared, and sets of synergies extracted from each datase...

Differences in diffusion tensor imaging parameters of brain white matter tracts between patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 and type 2 - a retrospective single-centre study
CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate diffuse disintegration of white matter pathways in DM patients, especially in the DM1 group. The damage to all types of fibres (association, commissural, and projection) may explain the diversity of clinical symptoms, which were more severe in the DM1 group of patients than in the DM2 group.CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: DTI in patients with DM may help us to understand the neural mechanisms underlying brain involvement during the disease. In future, it may help to identify biomarkers for disease progression and treatment response.PMID:37706668 | DOI:10.5603/pjnns.95587
