What Clinical Signs Can Be Associated With Benign External Hydrocephalus?
Discussion Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles and/or subarachnoid spaces. External hydrocephalus is a communicating hydrocephalus often defined as the patient having a rapidly enlarging head circumference (HC) and enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces especially over the frontal lobes with normal or moderately enlarged ventricles. Benign external hydrocephalus (BEH) is a self-limited external hydrocephalus that occurs during infancy and resolves spontaneously in childhood, usually by age 2 years, that is felt to not cause significant problems. It was first described by...

Improving health care transition and longitudinal care for adolescents and young adults with hydrocephalus: report from the Hydrocephalus Association Transition Summit.
Authors: Abstract The health care needs of children with hydrocephalus continue beyond childhood and adolescence; however, pediatric hospitals and pediatric neurosurgeons are often unable to provide them care after they become adults. Each year in the US, an estimated 5000-6000 adolescents and young adults (collectively, youth) with hydrocephalus must move to the adult health care system, a process known as health care transition (HCT), for which many are not prepared. Many discover that they cannot find neurosurgeons to care for them. A significant gap in health care services exists for young adults with hydroce...

Myelomeningocele-associated hydrocephalus: nationwide analysis and systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: From 1998 to 2014, hydrocephalus treatment has become more delayed and the number of hydrocephalic MMC patients not treated on initial inpatient stay has increased. Meta-analysis demonstrated that shunt malfunction and infection rates do not differ between delayed and simultaneous hydrocephalus treatment. PMID: 31574479 [PubMed - in process]

Prognostic Utility of Disproportionately Enlarged Subarachnoid Space Hydrocephalus in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Treated with Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis ADULT BRAIN
CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis demonstrated a relatively low prevalence of disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus and a poor diagnostic performance for treatment response.

Hydrocephalus Associated with Posterior Fossa Tumors: How to Manage Effectively ?
Conclusions: Hydrocephalus associated with PFT affects the quality of life of patients with such lesions. Routine preoperative CSF diversion is not necessary for the vast majority of patients with posterior fossa tumor-related hydrocephalus. A high index of suspicion and aggressive surveillance is required for the early identification and appropriate management of postresection hydrocephalus. Future studies are needed to address several unanswered questions pertaining to the management of this condition.

Can Shunt Response in Patients with Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Be Predicted from Preoperative Brain Imaging? A Retrospective Study of the Diagnostic Use of the Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Radscale in 119 Patients ADULT BRAIN
CONCLUSIONS: The Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Radscale showed moderate discrimination for shunt response but cannot, on its own, be used for selecting patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus for shunt surgery.

Rates Of Childhood Squint Surgery Have Plummeted Over Past 50 Years
But there's still inexplicable fivefold difference in rates across England, similar to wide discrepancies in tonsil removal Rates of surgery to correct childhood squint in England have tumbled over the past 50 years, finds research published online in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. But there's still a fivefold difference between the areas with the lowest and highest rates of the procedure, similar to the wide variations in tonsil removal, and it's not clear why, say the authors...

Sensors, Vol. 15, Pages 3750-3765: Modified Omega-k Algorithm for High-Speed Platform Highly-Squint Staggered SAR Based on Azimuth Non-Uniform Interpolation
In this work, the staggered SAR technique is employed for high-speed platform highly-squint SAR by varying the pulse repetition interval (PRI) as a linear function of range-walk. To focus the staggered SAR data more efficiently, a low-complexity modified Omega-k algorithm is proposed based on a novel method for optimal azimuth non-uniform interpolation, avoiding zero padding in range direction for recovering range cell migration (RCM) and saving in both data storage and computational load. An approximate model on continuous PRI variation with respect to sliding receive-window is employed in the proposed algorithm, leaving ...

Hydrocephalus in cerebral venous thrombosis
We examined the frequency, pathophysiology and associated clinical manifestations of hydrocephalus in patients with CVT admitted to our hospital between 2000 and 2010 (prospectively since July 2006). Hydrocephalus was defined as a bicaudate index larger than the 95th percentile for age, and/or a radial width of the temporal horn of ≥5 mm. We excluded patients in whom hydrocephalus was caused by a disease other than CVT or if it was iatrogenic. 20 out of 99 patients with CVT had hydrocephalus. 6 patients with hydrocephalus were excluded from the analysis. Patients with hydrocephalus more often had focal neurological defi...

Girl, 5, to have her eye REMOVED and put back in place by surgeons to fix squint
Chloe Strudwick, from Ifield, West Sussex, has a squint which leaves her seeing everything as 2D rather than 3D. Doctors believe surgery to remove her eye and shorten the muscles will cure it.

A 4-year-old girl with malaise, squint and restricted neck movement
Case history A 4-year-old girl presented with lethargy and anorexia, increasing in severity over the last few days. The child had been complaining of generalised joint pains and felt unable to move her neck. Also she complained of episodes of blurred vision, headaches and her mother reported a new onset squint. On further questioning, her mother said she had a circular rash on her forehead about 6 weeks previously, which had self-resolved. On examination, all observations were stable. She was irritable with restricted neck movement, neck stiffness and photosensitivity. Her pupils were equal and reactive but there was ...

Hydrocephalus caused by unilateral foramen of Monro obstruction: A review on terminology.
CONCLUSION: In unilateral FM obstruction hydrocephalus, an in-depth review on terminology application is critical to avoid mistakes that may compromise comparisons among different series. This terminology review suggests that Type B hydrocephalus, i.e., the hydrocephalus confined to just one lateral ventricle with no other sites of cerebrospinal fluid circulation blockage, are best described by the terms unilateral hydrocephalus (UH) and monoventricular hydrocephalus, the first being by far the most popular. Type A hydrocephalus is best represented in the literature by the terms uniloculated hydrocephalus and loculated ven...
