Global hydrocephalus epidemiology and incidence: systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS For the first time in a global model, the annual incidence of pediatric hydrocephalus is estimated. Low- and middle-income countries incur the greatest burden of disease, particularly those within the African and Latin American regions. Reliable incidence and burden figures for adult forms of hydrocephalus are absent in the literature and warrant specific investigation. A global effort to address hydrocephalus in regions with the greatest demand is imperative to reduce disease incidence, morbidity, mortality, and disparities of access to treatment. The clinical spectrum of hydrocephalus in adults: report of the first 517 patients of the Adult Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network registry.
CONCLUSIONSThe clinical spectrum of hydrocephalus in adults comprises more than iNPH or acquired hydrocephalus. Only 39% of patients had suspected iNPH, whereas 43% had childhood onset (i.e., those in the transition and unrecognized congenital groups). The severity of symptoms and impairment was worsened when the etiology of the hydrocephalus or complications of treatment caused additional neurological injury or when multiple comorbidities were present. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy for pediatric tumor-associated hydrocephalus.

Long-term Outcomes and Risk Factors Related to Hydrocephalus After Intracerebral Hemorrhage
AbstractHydrocephalus after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a common and treatable complication. However, the long-term outcomes and factors for predicting hydrocephalus have seldom been studied. The goal of this study was to determine the long-term outcomes and analyze the risk factors of hydrocephalus after ICH. A consecutive series of 1342 patients with ICH were reviewed from 2010 to 2016 to identify significant risk factors for hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus treatment in patients with craniosynostosis: an analysis from the Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network prospective registry
CONCLUSIONS: This is the largest prospective study reported on children with craniosynostosis and hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus in children with craniosynostosis most commonly occurs in syndromic patients and multisuture fusion. It is treated at varying ages; however, most patients undergo surgery for craniosynostosis prior to hydrocephalus treatment. While VPS treatment is performed more frequently, VPS and ETV are both reasonable options, with decreasing revision rates with increasing age, for the treatment of hydrocephalus associated with craniosynostosis.PMID:33794488 | DOI:10.3171/2021.1.FOCUS20979
