Left-sided gastroschisis: A case report and review of the literature
Publication date: September 2018Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports, Volume 36Author(s): Ethan A. Litman, Tyler D. Robinson, Upender K. Munshi, Christine WhyteAbstractThe fetus of a 29 year old G2P1 was diagnosed on routine prenatal ultrasound in the early second trimester with gastroschisis. Classically, gastroschisis is a right-sided periumbilical abdominal wall defect. Our case is highly unusual because the gastroschisis defect was on the left. None of the current theories of the embryogenesis of right sided gastroschisis adequately explain how the defect can arise on the left. Associated congenital anomal...

High prevalence of gastroschisis in Brazilian triple side border: A socioenvironmental spatial analysis
by Suzana de Souza, Oscar Kenji Nihei, Cezar Rangel Pestana This research investigated the spatial association between socioenvironmental factors and gastroschisis in Brazilian triple side border. A geographic analysis for gastroschisis prevalence was performed considering census sector units using Global Moran Index, Local Indicator of Spatial Association Analysis and Getis Ord statistics. Sociodemographic factors included rate of adolescent and parturients over 35 years; population with no income and above 5 minimum wages; rate of late prenatal; and proximity to power transmission lines. Logistic regression models were ...

Gastroschisis annual incidence, mortality, and trends in extreme Southern Brazil
CONCLUSION: Similar to what has been described in several regions/countries, there was a trend showing an 85% increase in the annual incidence of gastroschisis (p = 0.003) and the mortality was 33% with a trend of decreasing (p = 0.002).PMID:34115974 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.04.007

Gastroschisis and late-onset neonatal sepsis in a tertiary referral center in Southeastern Brazil
CONCLUSIONS: Newborns with gastroschisis have a higher risk of evolving with late-onset sepsis, despite this study did not calculate the risk of sepsis statistically, and the main germs detected by cultures were gram-positive bacteria, specifically Staphylococcus epidermidis.PMID:34153237 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.05.003

Outcome and management in neonates with gastroschisis in the third millennium —a single-centre observational study
Conclusion: Management of gastroschisis according to our protocol was successful with a high survival rate, no deaths in neonates born after 2005, and favourable results in LOS, duration on PN, and time on mechanical ventilation compared to other reports. Multicentre registry with long-term follow-up is required to establish the best management of gastroschisis. What is Known:• Gastroschisis is one of the most common congenital malformations in paediatric surgery with increasing incidence.• There is no consensus among clinicians regarding the optimal management of gastroschisis. What is New:• Although primary closure w...

Gestational Age at Delivery and Neonatal Outcomes among Infants with Gastroschisis in the Children's Hospitals Neonatal Consortium (CHNC)
Conclusion: Premature infants with gastroschisis had more neonatal complications including respiratory interventions, longer NICU stay, longer time to full enteral feeds, and higher need for tube feeds at discharge as compared with those delivered at term. Differences were greatest for those <35 weeks GA. While overall mortality remains low, these results provide additional information about GA at birth in gastroschisis, with no evidence of benefit from preterm delivery. Retrospective review of antimicrobial use for gastroschisis patients in Kigali, Rwanda: can improved stewardship reduce late inpatient deaths?
Conclusion: We identified frequent late deaths, prolonged antibiotic courses, and regular use of second-line antibiotic agents in this retrospective cohort of Rwandan gastroschisis patients. Future studies are needed to evaluate antimicrobial resistance in pediatric surgical patients in Rwanda. What is Known:• Global disparities in gastroschisis outcomes are extreme, with<4% mortality in high-income settings and 75-100% mortality in low-income settings.• Antimicrobial surveillance data is sparse across Africa, but existing evidence suggests high levels of resistance to first-line antibiotics in Rwanda. What is New:•...

Evolution of the completeness and consistency of the gastroschisis registry in the Brazilian Live Birth Information System, from 2005 to 2020
This study aimed to evaluate the evolution of the completeness and consistency of the gastroschisis registry in the Brazilian Live Birth Information System (SINASC). It is a time-series study on the completeness of the variable "occurrence of congenital anomaly" and the consistency of gastroschisis diagnosis in SINASC, in biennia from 2005 to 2020, for federative units, region, and Brazil. The consistency was estimated by the ratio between deaths from gastroschisis registered in the Brazilian Mortality Information System (SIM) and the total number of cases recorded in SINASC. Temporal trend was analyzed by joinpoint regres...
