Neurodevelopment and Health-Related Quality of Life in Infants Born with Gastroschisis: A 6-Year Retrospective French Study
Conclusion Our analyses confirm the idea that cases of complex gastroschisis and preterm delivery may lead to poorer outcome. Such hindsight (40 months in mean) allowed for an interesting assessment of development long after the patient's initial hospitalization and to confirm these results, a standardized neuropsychological evaluation of patients should be done when at least 6 years old. An accurate assessment of the social environment and its impact on the development and QoL of children will be fundamental to avoid selection bias. Quality of life in patients with gastroschisis is comparable with the general population: A questionnaire survey.
CONCLUSION: The study has shown that the majority of patients after operation of gastroschisis have a very good quality of life without limitation in comparison with the general population. The presented anthropometric data confirm that the development of patients with gastroschisis is favourable. PMID: 27982137 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Early Commencement of Enteral Feeds in Gastroschisis: A Systematic Review of Literature
Conclusions Early CEF may be associated with early attainment of FEF in gastroschisis. RCTs comparing early versus delayed CEF are needed urgently. [...] Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals: Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  Full text

Vanishing gastroschisis visualized by antenatal ultrasound: a case report and review of literature
We report a case of vanishing gastroschisis visualized by antenatal ultrasound with a 7-year long term follow-up. Currently, the child is still dependent on daily parenteral nutrition with no signs of hepatotoxicity. To our knowledge, it ’s the fourth case with a long-term follow-up. Vanishing gastroschisis is a rare complication of gastroschisis. However, physicians should be aware of it because its prognosis is worse than classical gastroschisis. When a vanishing gastroschisis is visualized or suspected by antenatal ultrasound, prenatal counseling is required with explanations about the risk of short bowel syndrome, th...

Trends in incidence and outcomes of gastroschisis in the United States: analysis of the national inpatient sample 2010 –2014
ConclusionThe incidence of neonates with gastroschisis increased between 2010 and 2014. Incidence was highest in the West. No difference in mortality and resource utilization was observed.

Safety and usefulness of plastic closure in infants with gastroschisis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsCurrent results suggest that plastic closure may be beneficial for infants with gastroschisis requiring silo formation. However, this evidence is suboptimal and further studies are needed.

Direct hyperbilirubinemia in newborns with gastroschisis
Conclusion(s)DH is common in patients with gastroschisis and is unlikely to be associated with pathology aside from PN. Additional work-up may lead to unnecessary resource utilization.Levels of evidenceCase series with no comparison group, Level IV.

Factors that Influence Longitudinal Growth from Birth to 18 Months of Age in Infants with Gastroschisis
Conclusion Our study demonstrates that infants with gastroschisis experience a significant decline in weight z-score between birth and discharge, and start to catch up on all growth parameters after discharge. Prematurity in gastroschisis infants is associated with a greater risk for weight loss during this time. This information emphasizes the importance of minimizing weight loss prior to discharge in premature infants with gastroschisis and highlights the need for optimal management strategies for these infants. What is the main factor in predicting the morbidity and mortality in patients with Gastroschisis: Delivery time, delivery mode, closure method, or the type of Gastroschisis (simple or complex)?
CONCLUSION: This study indicated that simple GS, compared with complex GS, was associated with improved neonatal outcomes. We suggest that the main factor affecting the patients? outcomes is whether the patient is a simple or complex GS rather than the abdominal wall closure method. Influence of birthplace on gastroschisis outcomes in a state in the southeastern region of Brazil
CONCLUSION: Although outborn patients with gastroschisis were less likely to have an antenatal diagnosis and were more prone to a longer time to undergo surgical and feeding procedures, and to spend more time in mechanical ventilation, these disadvantages seemed not to reflect on the death rate and the length of hospital stay of patients from this group.PMID:33773959 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.02.004

Prenatal ultrasonographic markers for prediction of complex gastroschisis and adverse perinatal outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion Prenatal ultrasonographic markers, especially the second trimester IABD and EABD, can identify fetuses that develop complex gastroschisis. Furthermore, these specific ultrasonographic markers can identify those babies at the highest risk for severe complications of this congenital anomaly and hence selected for future antenatal interventions.

Predictors of length of stay for simple gastroschisis: analysis of ACS NSQIP-P database
ConclusionPrematurity and birth weight are significant predictors of length of stay in simple gastroschisis patients. Prenatal counseling should continue to be one of the main factors to improve the outcomes for patients with gastroschisis.Type of study Retrospective cohort study.Level of evidence Level IV.

Gastroschisis in Mozambique: current status and priorities for improving care from Hospital  Central de Maputo, the largest and referral hospital of the country
ConclusionWhile the mortality rate remains high for gastroschisis patients in Mozambique, there have been a few survivors when surgery is performed. Improvements in neonatal care are needed. Given the high mortality rates and limited resources, we plan to focus our surgical efforts on bedside closure techniques.
