Whole exome sequencing identifies multiple novel candidate genes in familial gastroschisis
ConclusionConsidering the likely gene ‐disrupting prediction results and similar biological pattern of mechanisms, we propose a joint “multifactorial model” in gastroschisis pathogenesis.

Comparison of three risk stratification scores in gastroschisis neonates: gastroschisis prognostic score, gastroschisis risk stratification index and complex gastroschisis
ConclusionThere are three easily obtainable risk stratification scores for outcome prediction in gastroschisis patients, however, their predictive ability did not have a statistical difference in the present study. The Gastroschisis risk stratification index seemed to perform moderately well in mortality prediction.

Altered lipid metabolism in gastroschisis: A novel hypothesis
Abstract Gastroschisis is a congenital abdominal wall defect where there is herniation of abdominal organs. Optimal maternal nutritional intake, in particular, fatty acids, are vital for proper growth and development of the fetus. This pilot case–control study explored the association of several biomarkers of fatty acids and gastroschisis. Between 2008 and 2011, we recruited 13 pregnant women in mid‐gestation who were referred to the UCSD Prenatal Center for evaluation of an abnormal maternal serum alpha‐fetoprotein (MSAFP) test and subsequently identified as carrying a baby with gastroschisis. Nine controls were sel...

Gastroschisis Trends and Ecologic Link to Opioid Prescription Rates - United States, 2006-2015.
uis J Abstract Prevalence of gastroschisis, a serious birth defect of the abdominal wall resulting in some of the abdominal contents extending outside the body at birth, has been increasing worldwide (1,2). Gastroschisis requires surgical repair after birth and is associated with digestive and feeding complications during infancy, which can affect development. Recent data from 14 U.S. states indicated an increasing prevalence of gastroschisis from 1995 to 2012 (1). Young maternal age has been strongly associated with gastroschisis, but research suggests that risk factors such as smoking, genitourinary infections, ...

A case of traumatic rupture of a giant omphalocele and liver injury associated with transverse lie and preterm labor
We present a case of a baby delivered at 35 weeks with a known giant omphalocele, transverse lie, and the omphalocele downward in the birth canal who suffered rupture of the omphalocele and liver injury around the time of delivery. The pregnancy was complicated by one day of preterm labor, preterm premature rupture of the membranes, and the omphalocele was the presenting part. Despite pulmonary hypertension, rupture of the omphalocele, and a significant liver injury, individualized management with decompression of the liver hematoma allowed successful early closure with mesh followed by delayed reconstruction.

Omphalocele: national current birth prevalence and survival
ConclusionThe national birth prevalence for omphalocele in Sweden is 1/10,000 newborn, with high termination rates. Over half of the pregnancies with prenatally diagnosed omphalocele will be terminated. Among those who continue the pregnancy, 1-year survival rates are high.Type of studyNational register studyLevel of evidenceIII.

Fetal Omphalocele: Review of Predictive Factors Important for Antenatal Counseling?
Conclusions and Relevance A multidisciplinary approach should be encouraged after the diagnosis of fetal omphalocele. In addition to clinical team experience, antenatal counseling should be based on objective and gestational age-dependent criteria and should include long-term outcomes. Target Audience Obstetricians and gynecologists, family physicians. Learning Objectives After completing this activity, the learner should be better able to propose management of antenatal investigations and fetal surveillance; identify antenatal factors predictive of fetal and neonatal outcomes; and explain the different a...

Genetic variants conferring susceptibility to gastroschisis: a phenomenon restricted to the interaction with the environment?
ConclusionsGenetic susceptibility in gastroschisis is not restricted to the interaction with the environment and should not be too narrowly focused on environmental factors. We found significant associations with four SNPs from three genes related to blood pressure regulation, which supports a significant role of vascular disruption in the pathogenesis of gastroschisis. Future studies considering gene –gene or gene–environmental interactions are warranted for better understanding the etiology of gastroschisis.

Ultrasound markers predicting complex gastroschisis and adverse outcome: a longitudinal prospective nationwide cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on this large prospective longitudinal study we found that intra-abdominal bowel dilation when repeatedly present during fetal development is the only variable to differentiate between simple and complex gastroschisis. However its positive predictive value and therefore the clinical usefulness is limited. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. PMID: 31613023 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Hispanic ethnicity and acculturation, maternal age and the risk of gastroschisis in the national birth defects prevention study
Conclusion:These results provide further evidence that gastroschisis risk is associated with ethnicity and some aspects of acculturation. Additionally, these associations were limited to the offspring of women who are ≥20 at the time of conception. Birth Defects Research (Part A), 2013. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Prenatal diagnosis of fetal gastroschisis – The experience of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Centre in Olsztyn
Conclusions Early diagnosis seems to be of particular importance, as it allows monitoring for potential complications of gastroschisis, which may affect prompt decisions of elective preterm delivery, delivery at a referral center, and hence the possibility of preparing neonatal and pediatric surgical team.

Clinical presentation and survival in a population‐based cohort of infants with gastroschisis in Utah, 1997–2011
This study evaluated the associated malformations, small for gestational age, and survival among a clinically well‐characterized population‐based gastroschisis cohort, delivered from 1997–2011. We used data from Utah's statewide population‐based surveillance system, which monitors major structural birth defects among all pregnancy outcomes (i.e., live births, stillbirths, pregnancy terminations, and miscarriages). Of the initial 387 gastroschisis cases, we excluded 51 (13.2%) for the following reasons: inadequately described or macerated fetuses, part of a specific malformation complex or sequence (limb‐body wall...
