Non-operative management of a rare diagnosis of splenic torsion in a child with a history of giant omphalocele: A case report and literature review
Conclusion: Although rare, splenic torsion should be considered in a child with a history of omphalocele presenting with abdominal pain. Non-operative management of an infarcted spleen can be a safe treatment option to avoid surgery in complex patients.

Prenatal Diagnosis of Cloacal Exstrophy: A Case Report and Differential Diagnosis with a Simple Omphalocele
We reported a case with cloacal exstrophy and reviewed previous literature on differentiating it from an omphalocele. A 33-year-old, pregnant female visited our outpatient center for prenatal care at the 22nd gestational week. The midtrimester ultrasound showed fetal anomalies including a protruding mass from umbilicus, absence of bladder, ambiguous genitalia, and bilateral renal hydronephrosis. The parents received prenatal genetic counseling and decided to continue the pregnancy. A female baby was delivered at the 37th gestational week via vaginal delivery, and cloacal exstrophy without omphalocele was diagnosed. Cloacal...

Prenatal Prediction of the Type of Omphalocele Closure by Different Medical Consultants
Discussion: The consultants did not differ in their prenatal judgment of the primary closure of an omphalocele. The consultants tended to be too negative in their assessment, since 75% assessed the probability of primary closure overall to be

Can omphalocele ratio predict postnatal outcomes?
The clinical course of patients with omphalocele is challenging to predict. There is no standard method to characterize omphalocele size. Previous studies suggest that the ratio of abdominal circumference to omphalocele defect in-utero is indicative of postnatal outcomes. We hypothesize that omphalocele ratio correlates with outcomes of primary closure versus staged closure.

Multilayered Flap Technique: A Method for Delayed Closure of Giant Omphalocele
We present 3 patients treated by a delayed closure technique for ventral hernia repair. In this technique, the epithelialized omphalocele sac and peritoneum are elevated as flaps, which are used to reconstruct the abdominal wall in multiple layers.

Wandering spleen associated with omphalocele in a neonate: An unusual case with non-operative management
Publication date: Available online 16 June 2017 Source:Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports Author(s): Daisuke Masui, Suguru Fukahori, Kimio Asagiri, Shinji Ishii, Nobuyuki Saikusa, Naoki Hashizume, Motomu Yoshida, Naruki Higasidate, Saki Sakamoto, Shiori Tsuruhisa, Yoshiaki Tanaka, Minoru Yagi Wandering spleen with a history of omphalocele is extremely rare. We encountered a male baby with wandering spleen associated with omphalocele. This case of wandering spleen in a neonate was diagnosed by ultrasound and computed tomography scans after surgery for omphalocele. Our case was able to be managed non-operatively due ...

A rare case of OEIS complex & #8211;newer approach to diagnosis of exstrophy bladder by color doppler and its differentiation from simple omphalocele
The objective of this article is to present a new approach to diagnose and differentiate similar ventral masses by color Doppler. Two cases of ventral masses, a rare case of OEIS complex (Omphalocele-exstrophy-imperforate anus-spinal defects) with unusual presentation of exstrophy bladder and another of simple omphalocele, were studied by color Doppler for diagnosis and differentiation between the nature of similar masses. Ventral mass with absent bladder, normal kidneys, and normal amniotic fluid index raised the suspicion of exstrophy bladder. Color Doppler depicting altered intrafetal course of umbilical arteries and um...

Bone mineral density is increased in the cadmium-induced omphalocele chick model by using three-dimensional micro-computed tomography
ConclusionsIncreased BMD may be associated with lordosis of the vertebral column in the Cd-induced omphalocele chick model, stimulating osteogenesis by activating the canonical Wnt signalling pathway.

Bronchogenic cyst presenting as content of omphalocele - A case report.
Abstract Bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a very rare congenital anomaly occurring due to budding of the primitive foregut, and its common location is the posterior mediastinum. BC when diagnosed prenatally can be treated if it is encroaching on the development of lungs. BC has been reported in other locations such as cervical, thoracic, abdominal sites and also as subcutaneous lesions. Omphalocele is a congenital malformation occurring due to a central defect in the abdominal wall with herniation of the viscera. The nonentity documented here was found in a female fetus with 20 weeks of gestational age. The mother was a ...

Comprehensive Echocardiographic Assessment of Ventricular Function and Pulmonary Pressure in the Neonatal Omphalocele Population
Conclusion Patients with omphalocele have increased pulmonary pressure, with GO being worse than non-GO. RV dysfunction at initial echocardiography was significantly associated with mortality. Bovine omphalocele: errors in embryonic development, veterinarian importance, and the way forward
AbstractOmphalocele is an embryonic developmental error presented as a neonatal visceral umbilical herniation. Epidemiological and embryological studies are reviewed that revise our understanding of midgut development and defects in cattle. Google Scholar and PubMed were searched for omphalocele, exomphalos, calves, calf, cattle, epidemiology, genetics, disease presentation, and omphalocele treatments of bovine neonates. Omphalocele contains small intestine and sometimes liver and/or pyloric abomasum. This condition may arise from inadequately expanded abdominal cavity, herniated midgut entrapment, or inappropriate umbilic...

Antiherpetic Medication Use and the Risk of Gastroschisis: Findings from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, 1997–2007
ConclusionsOur study raises the possibility of an increased risk of gastroschisis because of either antiherpetic medication use during early pregnancy or the underlying genital herpes infection for which it was indicated.

Metaanalysis of the prevalence of intrauterine fetal death in gastroschisis
Conclusion: The overall incidence of IUFD in gastroschisis is much lower than previously reported. The largest risk of IUFD occurs before routine and elective early delivery would be acceptable. Risk for IUFD should not be the primary indication for routine elective preterm delivery in pregnancies that are affected by gastroschisis.

Sonographic predictors of postnatal bowel atresia in fetal gastroschisis.
CONCLUSION: IABD >14 mm is associated with an increased risk for postnatal bowel atresia in fetal gastroschisis. This finding may be useful in counseling patients regarding the anticipated postnatal course for their neonate. PMID: 23893619 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Gastroschisis and the Risk of Short Bowel Syndrome: Outcomes and Counselling.
We present 4 cases with significant bowel shortening with very different ante- and postnatal presentations. Cases: Three of the cases demonstrated 'vanishing' gastroschisis with progressively worsening antenatal intra-abdominal bowel dilatation with no defect present at birth. The fourth case followed an uneventful course antenatally but developed SBS considered secondary to gastroschisis-related atresia and necrosis. All 4 cases were classified as having SBS and were enrolled within the paediatric Intestinal Rehabilitation Programme. This involves autologous gastrointestinal reconstruction following a period of bowel expa...
