Folic acid fortification and prevalences of neural tube defects, orofacial clefts, and gastroschisis in California, 1989 to 2010
ConclusionWe observed a slower decline in prevalence of NTDs, an emergence of a decline in orofacial clefts, and a slower increase in gastroschisis, during the postfortification period in central California, relative to the prefortification period. Gastroschisis and maternal intake of phytoestrogens
This study provides some evidence for association with certain phytoestrogens, after adjusting for covariates. The implications of our findings for clinical practice are uncertain pending other studies examining this association. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

HDlive imaging of a giant omphalocele sac
We report a case of fetal giant omphalocele with HDlive images of the giant omphalocele sac containing multiple small bowel loops and almost the entire liver. In our case HDlive view was complementary to 2‐D ultrasound in identifying the herniated viscera, particularly the contours of the herniated small bowel and liver which mimicked the post‐natal views.

Umbilical hernia following gastroschisis closure: a common event?
Conclusions There is a significant umbilical hernia incidence following sutureless and pursestring sutured gastroschisis closure. This has not led to complications and the majority have not undergone repair.

Development of a core outcome set for use in determining the overall success of gastroschisis treatment
Discussion Development of a core outcome set will help to reduce the heterogeneity of the outcome measure reporting in gastroschisis. This will increase the quality of research taking place and ultimately improve care provided to infants with gastroschisis.

Gastroschisis: Prenatal ultrasonography and obstetrical criteria for predicting neonatal outcome.
CONCLUSION: The birth weight less than 2000g seems to be associate with an increase gastrointestinal complications. It is important to fight against prematurity in case of gastroschisis. PMID: 27568409 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Tissue expansion in management of giant omphalocele parietal sequelae.
CONCLUSION: The cutaneous expansion in the parietal sequela management of the giant omphaloceles seems to be an interesting alternative. This technique should be realized remotely and except any septic context. PMID: 27569456 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Superior Vesical Fissure Concealed by Giant Omphalocele: A Case Report
Publication date: Available online 8 September 2016 Source:Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports Author(s): Danial Hayek, Eric Massanyi, Melissa Mancuso, Katherine Krepkovich, Aaron Garrison Omphalocele is an abdominal wall defect characterized by exteriorization of abdominal viscera that is covered by a membrane. Omphalocele has a well-known association with chromosome abnormalities. Here we present a case of a superior vesical fissure (SVF) initially disguised as a giant omphalocele in a newborn with trisomy 18. We also show unique prenatal imaging and discuss the importance and limitations of prenatal genetic testing.

Management of Patients with Gastroschisis Requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Concurrent Respiratory Failure.
Abstract Treatment of gastroschisis often requires multiple surgical procedures to re-establish abdominal domain, reduce abdominal contents, and eventually close the abdominal wall. In patients who have concomitant respiratory failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), this process becomes further complicated. This situation is rare and only five such cases have been reported in the ECMO registry database. Management of three of the five patients along with results and implications for future care of similar patients is discussed here. Two patients had respiratory failure due to meconium aspirat...

Is vacuolization in amniocytes really pathognomonic for fetal gastroschisis?
Cytoplasmic vacuolization in amniocytes reportedly is specific to gastroschisis, but documentation is anecdotal. To test this point, we compared 47 placentas from documented cases of gastroschisis to 48 placentas from patients without gastroschisis. We found amniocyte vacuolization is highly sensitive (0.94), but not nearly as specific (0.44) for gastroschisis even after accounting for extent or prominence of vacuoles (specificities

Maternal Antibodies to Herpes Virus Antigens and Risk of Gastroschisis in Offspring
Gastroschisis risk is highest in offspring of young women and is increasing in prevalence, suggesting that exposures that are increasingly common among younger females may be causal. Some infections by viruses in the herpes family are more common in the earlier childbearing years and have been increasing in prevalence over time. Data from the Finnish Maternity Cohort were linked to Finnish malformation and birth registers (1987–2012) for this study, a nested case-control study of mothers of offspring with gastroschisis and age-matched controls. Maternal antibody responses in early pregnancy (mean gestational age ...

Prenatal and Postnatal Management of Gastroschisis in German-Speaking Countries: Is There a Standardized Management?
Conclusions There is no gold standard in German-speaking countries on how to manage fetuses and babies with gastroschisis. Moreover, this report unveils some questionable elements of daily practice for which there is no evidence at all and which can jeopardize outcome and even prove fatal (fetal therapy, preterm delivery, lack of abdominal pressure monitoring). Prospective randomized-controlled multicenter studies are needed to set a standard. Gastroschisis in a developing country: poor resuscitation is a more significant predictor of mortality than postnasal transfer time.
CONCLUSION: Our high mortality rate was not due to lengthy transfer times. The poor clinical condition of the patients on arrival at our hospital, which relates to deficiencies in the neonatal transfer system, had a direct impact on the survival of neonates with gastroschisis.
