Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5523: Fluorinated Polyimide/Allomelanin Nanocomposites for UV-Shielding Applications
min Yi Guangfu Liao A series of highly fluorinated polyimide/allomelanin nanoparticles (FPI/AMNPs) films were prepared with FPI as the matrix and AMNPs as the filler. Due to the formation of hydrogen bonds, significantly reinforced mechanical and UV-shielding properties are acquired. Stress–strain curves demonstrated a maximum tensile strength of 150.59 MPa and a fracture elongation of 1.40% (0.7 wt.% AMNPs), respectively, 1.78 and 1.56× that of pure FPI. The measurements of the UV-vis spectrum, photodegradation of curcumin and repeated running tests confirmed the splendid UV-shielding cap...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5519: Antimicrobial and Apoptotic Efficacy of Plant-Mediated Silver Nanoparticles
This article describes the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) using extracts from the flowers and leaves of tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.), which is known as a remedy for many health problems, including cancer. The reducing power of the extracts was confirmed by total phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant tests. The Ag-NPs were characterised by various analytical techniques including UV–vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and a dynamic light scattering (DLS) system. The obtained Ag-NPs showe...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5492: Single versus Double Coffee-Ring Effect Patterns in Thin-Layer Chromatography Coupled with Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Analysis of Anti-Diabetic Drugs Adulterated in Herbal Products
am Thi Thanh Ha In thin-layer chromatography coupled with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TLC-SERS), the coffee ring effect (CRE) describes the formation of a ring-shape spot (blank in the middle and darker on the edge) caused by the aggregation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), alone (single CRE) or with the analytes (double CRE). In this work, the SCRE and DCRE were investigated in two anti-diabetic drugs, hydrophobic glibenclamide (GLB) and more hydrophilic metformin (MET). The SCRE occurred in GLB analysis, as opposed to the DCRE that occurred in MET. It was proven that for optimization of the TLC-SERS analyti...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5446: The Enhanced Durability of AgCu Nanoparticle Coatings for Antibacterial Nonwoven Air Conditioner Filters
ward Sacher Antibacterial nonwoven fabrics, incorporated with Ag, have been applied as masks and air conditioner filters to prevent the spread of disease from airborne respiratory pathogens. In this work, we present a comparison study of Ag ions: Ag and AgCu nanoparticles (NPs) coated onto nonwoven fabrics intended for use as air conditioner antibacterial filters. We illustrate their color changes and durability running in air conditioners using antibacterial activity testing and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopic (XPS) analysis. We found that AgCu NPs showed the best antibacterial efficacy and durability. XPS analysis ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5425: Smartphone-Based Electrochemical Biosensor for On-Site Nutritional Quality Assessment of Coffee Blends
osaceleste Zumpano This work aimed to develop an easy-to-use smartphone-based electrochemical biosensor to quickly assess a coffee blend’s total polyphenols (Phs) content at the industrial and individual levels. The device is based on a commercial carbon-based screen-printed electrode (SPE) modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). At the same time, the biological recognition element, Laccase from Trametes versicolor, TvLac, was immobilized on the sensor surface by using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a cross-linking agent. The platform was electrochemically ch...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5434: Development and Characterization of Pickering Emulsion Stabilized by Walnut Protein Isolate Nanoparticles
This study was conducted to prepare walnut protein isolate nanoparticles (nano-WalPI) by pH-cycling, combined with the ultrasound method, to investigate the impact of various nano-WalPI concentrations (0.5~2.5%) and oil volume fractions (20~70%) on the stability of Pickering emulsion, and to improve the comprehensive utilization of walnut residue. The nano-WalPI was uniform in size (average size of 108 nm) with good emulsification properties (emulsifying activity index and stability index of 32.79 m2/g and 1423.94 min, respectively), and it could form a stable O/W-type Pickering emulsion. When the nano-WalPI concentration ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5413: An Estimation of the Antiviral Activity and Toxicity of Biologically Active Substances Obtained from the Raw Materials of Artemisia cina Berg. In Vitro and In Vivo
kezhanova Species of the genus Artemisia are well known for their use as ingredients in ancient medicine. The advantage of using plant extracts compared to individual pharmaceutical ingredients is the rate of adaptation of the pathogenic microorganisms to the drug. Due to the rapid development of multidrug-resistance in microorganisms in the field, it is essential to search for novel, effective drugs with low toxicity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to isolate and study the biologically active substances obtained from various substances in the raw materials of Artemisia cina Berg. The identification of the ma...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5383: Photocatalytic CO2 Conversion into Solar Fuels Using Carbon-Based Materials—A Review Molecules doi: 10.3390/molecules28145383 Authors: Dhivya Sundar Cheng-Hua Liu Sambandam Anandan Jerry J. Wu Carbon materials with elusive 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D nanostructures and high surface area provide certain emerging applications in electrocatalytic and photocatalytic CO2 utilization. Since carbon possesses high electrical conductivity, it expels the photogenerated electrons from the catalytic surface and can tune the photocatalytic activity in the visible-light region. However, the...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5368: Precise Molecular Engineering of Type I Photosensitizer with Aggregation-Induced Emission for Image-Guided Photodynamic Eradication of Biofilm
ok Ben Zhong Tang Biofilm-associated infections exert more severe and harmful attacks on human health since they can accelerate the generation and development of the antibiotic resistance of the embedded bacteria. Anti-biofilm materials and techniques that can eliminate biofilms effectively are in urgent demand. Therefore, we designed a type I photosensitizer (TTTDM) with an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and used F-127 to encapsulate the TTTDM into nanoparticles (F-127 AIE NPs). The NPs exhibit highly efficient ROS generation by enhancing intramolecular D–A interaction and confining molecu...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5352: An Electrochemical Sensor Based on a Porous Biochar/Cuprous Oxide (BC/Cu2O) Composite for the Determination of Hg(II)
Shangxing Chen Mercuric ion (Hg2+) in aqueous media is extremely toxic to the environment and organisms. Therefore, the ultra-trace electrochemical determination of Hg2+ in the environment is of critical importance. In this work, a new electrochemical Hg2+ sensing platform based on porous activated carbon (BC/Cu2O) modified with cuprous oxide was developed using a simple impregnation pyrolysis method. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was used to investigate the sensing capability of the BC/Cu2O electrode towards Hg2+. Due to the excellent conductivity and large specific surface area of BC, and...
