Strict self-isolation did not protect Swedish cancer patients on active treatment from the risk of becoming seropositive for SARS-CoV-2
Conclusion: For Swedish patients on active cancer treatment, high self-assessed COVID-19-related anxiety or strict adherence to self-isolation guidelines were not associated with a lower risk of COVID-19. Patients with HM were less likely to develop serological antibody response after COVID-19 and were more likely to require advanced hospital care, but expressed less COVID-19-related anxiety than patients with SM.PMID:37729083 | DOI:10.1080/0284186X.2023.2257873

Efficient trapping and destruction of SARS-CoV-2 using PECO-assisted Molekule air purifiers in the laboratory and real-world settings
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Sep 18;264:115487. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115487. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is transmitted human-to-human via aerosols and air-borne droplets. Therefore, capturing and destroying viruses from indoor premises are essential to reduce the probability of human exposure and virus transmission. While the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems help in reducing the indoor viral load, a targeted approach is required to effectively remove SARS-CoV-2 from indoor air to address human exposure concerns. The present study...

Novel inflammatory biomarkers in the prognosis of COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, this meta-analysis provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive evidence for the role of the mentioned novel inflammatory biomarkers in the prognosis of COVID-19, especially in evaluating death and other poor prognoses, with most biomarkers showing a better discriminatory ability.PMID:37727063 | DOI:10.1177/17534666231199679

Barriers to the success of COVID-19 immunisation programs in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea
CONCLUSION: Vaccine hesitancy is a significant problem that has the potential to negatively affect population-level health. An urgent focused effort to strengthen immunisation programs in PNG is evident. Preventative primary health care is a national priority; however, for the successful delivery of vaccination initiatives, well-formed immunisation programs that include education that will dispel myths and misinformation are required.PMID:37730242 | DOI:10.22605/RRH7883

Children's Daily Living Routine Mediates the Relations Between Parent-Child Relationships and Child Adjustment Problems During School Suspension in Hong Kong
This study examines how children's routine mediated the associations between parent-child relationships and child adjustment problems during the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong, when schools were suspended. The study collected data from 937 parents (87.8% mothers) of children aged 5-12 (M = 7.35 years, SD = 2.09; 50.5% girls). Parents reported on parent-child relationships, children's daily living routine, and child adjustment problems in an online survey. Our findings from structural equation modeling indicate that parent-child closeness was negatively related to child adjustment problems, whereas conflic...

Physical activity and physical fitness among children and adolescents after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the WHO European Region: a systematic review protocol
Introduction The implementation of COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions resulted in limitations for physical activity (PA) opportunities, which may have initiated a longer-term behavioural change. The protocol describes the methodology for a planned systematic review that aims to summarise changes in PA and physical fitness (PF) in children and adolescents in the WHO European Region after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods and analysis The protocol adheres to the ‘Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis for Protocols’ (PRISMA-P) statement. Using a peer-reviewed search strat...

Resilience perspective on healthcare professionals adaptations to changes and challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic: a meta-synthesis
Conclusion Healthcare professionals demonstrated significant adaptive capacity when faced with challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Several adaptations were identified as beneficial for future organisational healthcare service changes, while others exposed weaknesses in healthcare system designs and capacity, leading to dysfunctional adaptations. Healthcare professionals’ experiences working during the COVID-19 pandemic present a unique opportunity to learn how healthcare systems rapidly respond to changes, and how resilient healthcare services can be built globally.

Reasons, Rewards, and Tips for a More Accessible and Inclusive Web
The following is a guest article by Ben Cash, Founding Partner and CEO at Reason One The end of September marks International Week of the Deaf, followed soon after by Blind Americans Equality Day. Both are reminders of the need to make online resources accessible to all. Supporting this is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), intended to protect the civil rights of persons with disabilities when it comes to areas like employment, government services, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications. For any organization – and particularly healthcare entities and systems – accessibility should...

A Review of Studies on the Covid-19 Pandemic and the Psychological Effects of Related Measures on Children, Youth and Parents
Turk Psikiyatri Derg. 2023 Fall;34(3):202-214. doi: 10.5080/u25936.ABSTRACTPandemics are social events that affect individuals' lives in many ways and have a significant impact on the mental health of masses. Pandemics and measures taken to combat these epidemics affect children and young people as well as adults. The purpose of the current review is to compile studies that have been conducted on the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and related measures on children, youth, and parents, and use the findings to shed light on future studies. In this review, 35 studies that were determined as a result of a compre...

Evaluation of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Cystic Echinococcosis Indirect Hemagglutination Test Dynamics: A Single-center Experience
CONCLUSION: A significant decrease was observed in the rate of IHA positivity during the pandemic period. The status of no increase in positivity rates despite a significant decrease in IHA tests makes us think that the diagnosis may be missed in some patients or that there could be disruptions in their follow-up. For this reason, in order to continue the fight successfully against CE, which is an important public health problem for our country, early diagnosis and regular follow-ups should be emphasized with educations, and the laboratory-clinician communication should be strengthened in order to use tests more efficientl...

Featured immune characteristics of COVID-19 and systemic lupus erythematosus revealed by multidimensional integrated analyses
CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate the immune response differences and immune characteristic similarities, such as the cytokine storm, between COVID-19 and SLE, which might pivotally function in the pathogenesis of the two diseases and provide potential intervention targets for both diseases.PMID:37725104 | DOI:10.1007/s00011-023-01791-3

Student Perceptions of a New Course Using Argumentation in Medical Education
CONCLUSION: These findings support evidence from educational scholarship outside of medicine showing argumentation as a learning tool is well received by students. Further work is needed to determine whether it improves critical thinking skills and enhances learning in medical education.PMID:37724185 | PMC:PMC10505381 | DOI:10.2147/AMEP.S394219

How does the Immunological System Change during the SARS-COV-2 Attack? A Clue for the New Immunotherapy Discovery
Curr Med Chem. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.2174/0929867331666230918092749. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-COV-2) is one of the biggest unsolved global problems of the 21st century for which there has been no definitive cure yet. Like other respiratory viruses, SARS-COV-2 triggers the host immunity dramatically, causing dysfunction in the immune system, both innate and adaptive, which is a common feature of COVID-19 patients. Evidence shows that in the early stages of COVID-19, the immune system is suppressed while it is overactive in severe p...
