Modeling Tumor Growth Using Partly Conditional Survival Models: A Case Study in Colorectal Cancer
CONCLUSION: The PC modeling approach offers flexible characterization of associations between longitudinal covariates, such as serially assessed tumor burden, and survival time. It can be applied to a variety of data of this nature and used as clinical trials are ongoing to incorporate new disease assessment information as it is accumulated, as indicated by an example from colorectal cancer.PMID:37713655 | DOI:10.1200/CCI.22.00203

Melanin-targeted < sup > 18 < /sup > F-PFPN PET imaging may shed light for clear cell sarcoma
CONCLUSION: Melanin-targeted [18F]-PFPN PET imaging is feasible for the diagnosis of CCS. Different imaging features were displayed on [18F]-PFPN and [18F]-FDG PET imaging, demonstrating the complementary role of the tracers. Combined use of the two imaging modalities would be preferred in patients with CCS.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT05963035.PMID:37714979 | DOI:10.1007/s00259-023-06439-2

Clinical improvement in early onset interstitial lung disease using rituximab in children with anti-MDA5 positive juvenile dermatomyositis
CONCLUSION: This is the first study to examine the use of RTX in children with JDM and anti-MDA5 antibodies, with notable improvements ILD, cutaneous and musculoskeletal manifestations. Further studies are needed to better understand the efficacy of RTX on JDM disease related complications.PMID:37714547 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-0544

Ring artifacts correction for computed tomography image using unsupervised contrastive learning
Phys Med Biol. 2023 Sep 15. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/acfa60. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTComputed tomography (CT) is a widely employed imaging technology for disease detection. However, CT images often suffer from ring artifacts, which may result from hardware defects and other factors. These artifacts compromise image quality and impede diagnosis. To address this challenge, we propose a novel method based on dual contrast learning image style transformation network model (DCLGAN) that effectively eliminates ring artifacts from CT images while preserving texture details. Approach: Our method involves simulating ri...

Computed tomography angiography-based radiomics model to identify high-risk carotid plaques
CONCLUSIONS: The combined model of the radiomics features of carotid plaques and PVAT and the traditional CTA features significantly contributes to identifying high-risk carotid plaques compared with traditional CTA model.PMID:37711840 | PMC:PMC10498225 | DOI:10.21037/qims-23-158

Guillain-Barr é syndrome in patients dying with COVID-19 in Italy: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Although the mechanism of GBS onset is still unclear in COVID-19, fatal cases may be more frequent than other virus-related GBS, so that strictly monitoring in high-risk patients could dramatically decrease the mortality of GBS.PMID:37712236 | DOI:10.4415/ANN_23_03_04

Fluoro-edenite non-neoplastic diseases in Biancavilla (Sicily, Italy): pleural plaques and/or pneumoconiosis?
CONCLUSIONS: Asbestosis-like features were substantiated in Biancavilla residents without known occupational exposure to asbestos. Further studies to estimate population respiratory health are required. Experimental studies on the fibrogenic potential of fluoro-edenite are needed.PMID:37712235 | DOI:10.4415/ANN_23_03_03

Investigation of uncertainty in internal target volume definition for lung stereotactic body radiotherapy
This study evaluated the validity of internal target volumes (ITVs) defined by three- (3DCT) and four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT), and subsequently compared them with actual movements during treatment. Five patients with upper lobe lung tumors were treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) at 48 Gy in four fractions. Planning 3DCT images were acquired with peak-exhale and peak-inhale breath-holds, and 4DCT images were acquired in the cine mode under free breathing. Cine images were acquired using an electronic portal imaging device during irradiation. Tumor coverage was evaluated based on the manner in ...

An in vivo study to investigate an original intramedullary bone graft harvesting technology
CONCLUSIONS: Here, we present the first results of an innovative concept for harvesting intramedullary BG. It is a prototype of a novel aspirator technology that enables the stepwise harvesting of first BM and subsequent bone chips from the intramedullary canal of long bones. Both the BG collected with the RIA 2 system and the aspirator prototype had the capacity to preserve the BG's osteoinductive microenvironment. Future in vivo studies are required to confirm the bone regenerative capacity of BG harvested with the innovative harvesting technology.PMID:37715198 | DOI:10.1186/s40001-023-01328-8

Cardiac Tamponade Secondary to Hemorrhagic Pericardial Effusion: A Complication of STEMI
Conclusion: The differential for hemodynamic compromise in a patient with STEMI is broad, but quickly distinguishing pump failure from other life-threatening causes of shock is imperative to dictate time-sensitive management decisions. The presence of a hemorrhagic pericardial effusion in the setting of STEMI is a surrogate marker for a severe infarct and can help the bedside physician determine whether a patient will be better served in the catheterization lab for revascularization or in the operating room for surgical repair.PMID:37711482 | PMC:PMC10498953 | DOI:10.31486/toj.23.0023
