Title: The Role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist Multiple Sclerosis, the patients’ and families’ and carers’ perspective: an integrative review
Conclusion: It can be argued that MS CNSs are best placed to meet the complex, variable needs individuals with MS, their families and carers. Further evidence is required to explore the variability of the disease and the progressive effect and impact of cognitive decline on MS patient, families’ and carers’ in order to meet their fluctuating and often complex needs. Findings from the review suggest a multifaceted role, and additionally, the needs of patients, families and carers are difficult to define as they vary over time as the disease progresses.

Multiple Sclerosis Book Club: DREAMS by Kristie Salerno Kent
“The word ‘DREAMS’ may end in MS but MS didn’t end my dreams, don’t let it end yours” lives large as a theme throughout Kristie Salerno Kent’s new book, DREAMS. Many of us first came know Kristie through a short film she produced in conjunction with that National MS Society’s Moving Forward Film Festival a few years back.  We find out through this tome, that she had been reaching out to people with MS for a number of years prior to that. The precursors to diagnoses that are mentioned in the first chapter, Dreaming of the Spotlight, can be all too familiar to someone living with multiple sclerosis.  Kristi...

Prolactin in multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is more common among women than men. MS often goes into remission during pregnancy, when prolactin (PRL) levels are known to be high. In an animal model of demyelination, PRL promoted myelin repair, suggesting it has potential as a remyelinating therapy in MS. In this systematic review, we examined the known associations between PRL and MS, in order to elucidate its potential role in the pathophysiology and treatment of MS. A systematic search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed and EMBASE, using the keywords "prolactin" AND "multiple sclerosis." The inclusion criteria were met by 23 st...

Studying Immune Cells In The Search For Therapeutic Targets For Treating Multiple Sclerosis
Misguided killer T cells may be the missing link in sustained tissue damage in the brains and spines of people with multiple sclerosis, findings from the University of Washington reveal. Cytoxic T cells, also known as CD8+ T cells, are white blood cells that normally are in the body's arsenal to fight disease. Multiple sclerosis is characterized by inflamed lesions that damage the insulation surrounding nerve fibers and destroy the axons, electrical impulse conductors that look like long, branching projections. Affected nerves fail to transmit signals effectively...

Explaining temporal trends in annualised relapse rates in placebo groups of randomised controlled trials in relapsing multiple sclerosis: systematic review and meta-regression
Conclusion: The observed decline in trial ARRs may result from decreasing pre-trial ARRs and a shorter time period over which pre-trial ARRs were calculated. Increasing patient age and duration of illness may also contribute.
