Identification of biomarkers of renal ischemia-reperfusion injury by bioinformatics analysis and single-cell sequencing analysis combined with in vivo validation
CONCLUSION: cyp1a1 and pdk4 were identified to play important roles in renal IRI. This research provides a new perspective and basis for studying the pathogenesis of renal IRI and developing new treatments.PMID:37704087 | DOI:10.1016/j.trim.2023.101928

Potential of mesenchymal stem cell-derived conditioned medium/secretome as a therapeutic option for ocular diseases
Regen Med. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.2217/rme-2023-0089. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch has shown that the therapeutic effect of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is partially due to its secreted factors as opposed to the implantation of the cells into the treated tissue or tissue replacement. MSC secretome, especially in the form of conditioned medium (MSC-CM) is now being explored as an alternative to MSCs transplantation. Despite the observed benefits of MSC-CM, only a few clinical trials have evaluated it and other secretome components in the treatment of eye diseases. This review provides insight into the potential the...

Emerging therapeutic options for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: The data analyzed in this review showed clinically significant improvement in individual histological features of NAFLD in both animal and human trials for all four classes, as well as good safety profiles (P < 0.05). We believe this compilation of information will have positive clinical implications in obtaining an FDA-approved therapy for NAFLD.PMID:37701920 | PMC:PMC10494562 | DOI:10.4254/wjh.v15.i8.1001

Immune Dysfunction from Radiation Exposure
Radiat Res. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1667/RADE-22-00197.1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExposure to ionizing radiation causes acute damage and loss of bone marrow and peripheral immune cells that can result in high mortality due to reduced resistance to infections and hemorrhage. Besides these acute effects, tissue damage from radiation can trigger inflammatory responses, leading to progressive and chronic tissue damage by radiation-induced loss of immune cell types that are required for resolving tissue injuries. Understanding the mechanisms involved in radiation-induced immune system injury and repair will provide new insig...

Macrophage colony-stimulating factor as a weapon against cytomegalovirus
EMBO Mol Med. 2023 Sep 12:e18319. doi: 10.15252/emmm.202318319. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the severe opportunistic infections faced by severely immunocompromised patients. High viral loads cause tissue-invasive disease and expose to death or various indirect effects. Substantial progress was made in monitoring active infection, and antiviral drugs were developed. However, dose-limiting toxicities and genotypic resistance limit therapeutic efficacy and vaccine development is hampered by the complex biology of the virus. In this issue of EMBO Molecular Medicine, Kandalla et al (2...

Coating-Free Culture Medium for Establishing and Maintaining Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
In this study, we develop an innovative coating-free medium for expanding hPSCs. The xenofree medium supports the weekend-free culture and competitive growth of hPSCs on several cell culture plastics without an additional pre-coating process. The pluripotent stemness of the expanded cells is stably sustained for more than 10 passages, featured with high pluripotent marker expressions, normal karyotyping, and differentiating capacity for three germ layers. The expression levels of some integrins are reduced, compared with those of the hPSCs on Matrigel. This medium also successfully supports the clonal expansion and induced...
