Ki67 and prostate specific antigen are prognostic in metastatic hormone na ïve prostate cancer
CONCLUSION: PSA and Ki67 immunoreactive scores are prognostic in the metastatic hormone-sensitive setting, with PSA being superior. The combination of Ki67 and PSA did not give additional prognostic value. The results suggest immunohistochemical scoring of PSA to have potential to improve identification of patients responding well to ADT alone.PMID:37713321 | DOI:10.1080/0284186X.2023.2254480

The Effect of Distributional Restrictions in Speech Perception: A Case Study From Korean and Taiwanese Southern Min
Lang Speech. 2023 Sep 15:238309231195263. doi: 10.1177/00238309231195263. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn Korean, voiced oral stops can occur intervocalically as allophones of their voiceless lenis counterparts; they can also occur initially as variants of nasal stops as a result of initial denasalization (e.g., /motu/→[bodu] "all"). However, neither [ŋ] nor [ɡ] (the denasalized variant of the velar nasal) is allowed in the initial position due to the phonotactic restriction against initial [ŋ] in Korean. Given the distribution of nasal and voiced stops in Korean, this study draws on the idea of cue informativeness, ...

A Nationwide Study on Mitral Valve Repair Versus Replacement for Active Endocarditis
CONCLUSIONS: Contemporary trends in mitral valve surgery for active infective endocarditis suggest growing patient complexity but slightly declining early mortality rates. A trend of decreasing mitral valve repair rates was seen. Our results suggest improved late outcomes of valve repair compared to replacement.PMID:37714504 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2023.08.032

The C-terminal tail of Rad17, iVERGE, binds the 9 ‒1‒1 complex independently of AAA+ ATPase domains to provide another clamploader interface
DNA Repair (Amst). 2023 Sep 6;130:103567. doi: 10.1016/j.dnarep.2023.103567. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe ATR pathway plays a crucial role in maintaining genome integrity as the major DNA damage checkpoint. It also attracts attention as a therapeutic target in cancer treatment. The Rad17-RFC2-5 complex loads the Rad9-Hus1-Rad1 (9-1-1) DNA clamp complex onto damaged chromatin to activate the ATR pathway. We previously reported that phosphorylation of a polyanionic C-terminal tail of human Rad17, iVERGE, is essential for the interaction between Rad17 and the 9-1-1 complex. However, the molecular mechanism has remained u...

Nanotechnology in Coronary Heart Disease
Acta Biomater. 2023 Sep 13:S1742-7061(23)00545-7. doi: 10.1016/j.actbio.2023.09.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCoronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the major causes of death and disability worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries and among older populations. Conventional diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have limitations such as low sensitivity, high cost and side effects. Nanotechnology offers promising alternative strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of CHD by exploiting the unique properties of nanomaterials. In this review, we use bibliometric analysis to identify research hotspots in t...

Preclinical activity of selinexor in combination with eribulin in uterine leiomyosarcoma
In this study, we evaluated the effects of selinexor in combination with doxorubicin and eribulin in the LMS tumor model in vitro and in vivo. Treatment of selinexor combined with eribulin showed synergistic effects on tumor growth inhibition in SK-UT1 LMS-derived xenografts. Immunohistochemical assessment of the tumor tissues showed a significantly reduced expression of proliferation (Ki67) and XPO1 markers following combination therapy compared to the control group. Global transcriptome analyses on tumor tissue revealed that the combination therapy regulates genes from several key cancer-related pathways that are differe...

Preservation of circadian rhythm in hepatocellular cancer
J Biol Chem. 2023 Sep 13:105251. doi: 10.1016/j.jbc.2023.105251. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCircadian rhythms are controlled at the cellular level by a molecular clock consisting of several genes/proteins engaged in a transcription-translation-degradation feedback loop. These core clock proteins regulate thousands of tissue-specific genes. Regarding circadian control in neoplastic tissues, reports to date have demonstrated anomalous circadian function in tumor models and cultured tumor cells. We have extended these studies by analyzing circadian rhythmicity genome-wide in a mouse model of liver cancer, in which mice tre...

Olaparib plus abiraterone versus placebo plus abiraterone in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (PROpel): final prespecified overall survival results of a randomised, double-blind, phase 3 trial
This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03732820, and is completed and no longer recruiting.FINDINGS: Between Oct 31, 2018 and March 11, 2020, 1103 patients were screened, of whom 399 were randomly assigned to olaparib plus abiraterone and 397 to placebo plus abiraterone. Median follow-up for overall survival in patients with censored data was 36·6 months (IQR 34·1-40·3) for olaparib plus abiraterone and 36·5 months (33·8-40·3) for placebo plus abiraterone. Median overall survival was 42·1 months (95% CI 38·4-not reached) with olaparib plus abiraterone and 34·7 months (31·0-39·3) with placebo plus a...

Plexiform neurofibroma (Hamartoma) of the median nerve: A two-case report
Hand Surg Rehabil. 2023 Sep 13:S2468-1229(23)00166-4. doi: 10.1016/j.hansur.2023.08.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlexiform neurofibroma is a benign peripheral nerve-sheath tumor, rarely involving major nerves of the extremities. In the literature, there are no clear treatment strategies for plexiform neurofibroma of major peripheral nerves. Our experience encountered two patients with plexiform neurofibroma of the median nerve, presenting with a palmar mass and symptoms of carpal tunnel compression. Preoperatively, plexiform neurofibroma was diagnosed on MRI and clinical examination. Both patients also experienced si...

Cardiac Tamponade Secondary to Hemorrhagic Pericardial Effusion: A Complication of STEMI
Conclusion: The differential for hemodynamic compromise in a patient with STEMI is broad, but quickly distinguishing pump failure from other life-threatening causes of shock is imperative to dictate time-sensitive management decisions. The presence of a hemorrhagic pericardial effusion in the setting of STEMI is a surrogate marker for a severe infarct and can help the bedside physician determine whether a patient will be better served in the catheterization lab for revascularization or in the operating room for surgical repair.PMID:37711482 | PMC:PMC10498953 | DOI:10.31486/toj.23.0023
