Young Adult Women and Sexual Awareness in the Digital Age: Examining Pathways Linking Online Dating Debut and Mindfulness with Sexual and Mental Health
Arch Sex Behav. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s10508-023-02692-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSexual awareness is an understudied phenomenon, despite its known effects on mental health. Little is known about the predictors of sexual awareness, including how early sexual debut and early engagement with online dating and hookup apps might impact the development of sexual mindfulness. Given the conceptual overlap between mindfulness and sexual awareness, this study tested a model that hypothesized that general mindfulness and early sexual and online dating debuts may be associated with mental health outcomes and sexual behavior...

The effects of low-intensity resistance training with blood flow restriction versus traditional resistance exercise on lower extremity muscle strength and motor functionin ischemic stroke survivors: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: LIRT-BFR produced a significant improvement in muscle strength, balance, walking capacity, and anxiety and depression in ischemic stroke patients, and the improvement are comparable to HIRT.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT05281679.PMID:37724785 | DOI:10.1080/10749357.2023.2259170

Investigating the potential effects of α-synuclein aggregation on susceptibility to chronic stress in a mouse Parkinson's disease model
CONCLUSIONS: Progressive bilateral α-syn aggregation might lead to compensatory activity increase and alterations in emotionally regulated behavior, without affecting stress susceptibility. Understanding how α-syn aggregation and degeneration in specific brain structures contribute to depression and anxiety in PD patients requires further investigation.PMID:37725330 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-023-00530-z

Non-pharmacological Management of Postoperative Delirium
Anasthesiol Intensivmed Notfallmed Schmerzther. 2023 Sep;58(9):494-512. doi: 10.1055/a-2065-3764. Epub 2023 Sep 19.ABSTRACTPostoperative delirium is common especially in the elderly and is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Non-pharmacological multicomponent interventions are effective in reducing the incidence and to a degree the duration of postoperative delirium and are recommended in international guidelines on postoperative delirium as first line intervention for management of delirium. Non-pharmacological management of postoperative delirium consists of strategies for risk stratification, risk red...

Efficacy of a music-based intervention in a preclinical model of traumatic brain injury: An initial foray into a novel and non-pharmacological rehabilitative therapy
Exp Neurol. 2023 Sep 17:114544. doi: 10.1016/j.expneurol.2023.114544. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTraumatic brain injury (TBI) causes neurobehavioral and cognitive impairments that negatively impact life quality for millions of individuals. Because of its pernicious effects, numerous pharmacological interventions have been evaluated to attenuate the TBI-induced deficits or to reinstate function. While many such pharmacotherapies have conferred benefits in the laboratory, successful translation to the clinic has yet to be achieved. Given the individual, medical, and societal burden of TBI, there is an urgent need for alte...

The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma Experience and Complicated Grief: The Importance of Psychological Support for Individuals Coping With Pet Loss in Korea
CONCLUSION: People who experienced pet loss had significant psychological symptoms, ranging from 32% to 55%. Childhood trauma experiences affect complicated grief, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, insomnia and prolonged grief disorder after pet loss. After pet loss, people with childhood trauma may require more psychological help than those without trauma.PMID:37724498 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e305

Impact of noscapine on halting the progression of pentylenetetrazole induced kindling epilepsy in mice
Clin Exp Pharmacol Physiol. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1111/1440-1681.13825. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpilepsy is caused by an excessive recurrent excitatory neuronal firing, characterized by motor, psychomotor, and sensory impairments. Current therapies fail to produce 100% outcomes because of the complexity of the disease, poor diagnosis, and upsurge to drug-resistant epilepsy. The study repurposed the drug 'noscapine' mainly known for its anti-tussive properties. For the management of epilepsy and its associated secondary complications. To confirm the effect of noscapine, adult mice were injected with pentylenetetrazole ...

The association between labour epidural analgesia and postpartum depression in primiparous patients: a historical cohort study
CONCLUSION: This historical cohort study found an association between LEA and PPD among primiparous patients who subsequently had a second pregnancy in the same province. The findings call into question the hypothesis that LEA decreases the risk for PPD and further illustrates the complexities of PPD.PMID:37726496 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02568-2

Benzodiazepine Use Disorder: Common Questions and Answers
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Sep;108(3):260-266.ABSTRACTIn the United States, more than 30 million adults have reported taking a benzodiazepine within the past year. Misuse-use of a drug in a way that a doctor did not direct-accounts for 17.2% of all benzodiazepine use. Family physicians face challenges when balancing the patient's perceived benefits of benzodiazepines with known risks and lack of evidence supporting their use. Benzodiazepines cause significant central nervous system-related adverse effects including sedation, confusion, memory loss, depression, falls, fractures, and motor vehicle crashes. Factors that increase ...
