Characteristics and Predictors of Apparent Treatment Resistant Hypertension in Real-World Populations Using Electronic Health Record-Based Data
CONCLUSIONS: In two large, diverse real-world populations, we observed similar comorbidities and predictors of aTRH as prior studies. In the future, these results may be used to improve healthcare professionals' understanding of aTRH predictors and associated comorbidities.PMID:37712350 | DOI:10.1093/ajh/hpad084

Cardiovascular risk in axial spondyloarthritis —a systematic review
AbstractCardiovascular manifestations are common in patients suffering axial spondyloarthritis and can result in substantial morbidity and disease burden. To give an overview of this important aspect of axial spondyloarthritis, we conducted a systematic literature search of all articles published between January 2000 and 25 May 2023 on cardiovascular manifestations. Using PubMed and SCOPUS, 123 out of 6792 articles were identified and included in this review. Non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis seems to be underrepresented in studies; thus, more evidence for ankylosing spondylitis exists. All in all, we found some tra...

Male kidney-specific BMAL1 knockout mice are protected from Potassium-deficient, high salt diet-induced blood pressure increases
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00126.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe circadian clock protein BMAL1 is a transcription factor that impacts kidney function, including blood pressure (BP) control. Previously, we showed that male, but not female, kidney-specific cadherin Cre positive BMAL1 knockout mice (KS-BMAL1 KO) exhibit lower BP compared to littermate controls. The goal of this study was to determine the BP phenotype and immune response in male KS-BMAL1 KO in response to a low potassium, high salt diet (LKHS). BP, renal inflammatory markers and immune cells were measured in male mic...

SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitors suppress the activities of the RVLM neurons in newborn Wistar rats
In this study, we examined the effects of SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitors on the bulbospinal neurons of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). To investigate whether bulbospinal RVLM neurons are sensitive to SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitors, we examined the changes in the neuronal membrane potentials (MPs) of these neurons using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique during superfusion of the cells with the SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitors. A brainstem-spinal cord preparation was used for the experiments. Our results showed that superfusion of the RVLM neurons with SGLT2 and SGLT1 inhibitor solutions induced hyperpolarization of the neuro...

Thymoquinone attenuates olanzapine-induced metabolic disorders in rats
CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates the effectiveness of TQ on OLZ-induced metabolic abnormalities related to its antioxidant activity and regulation of glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism.PMID:37707771 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-023-08726-5

Mental illness and cardiovascular health: observational and polygenic score analyses in a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows widespread associations of (genetic liability to) mental illness (primarily depressive disorder) with CVD, even after confounder adjustment. Future research should focus on clarifying potential causal pathways between mental illness and CVD.PMID:37706306 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291723002635

Probiotics for pancreatic β-cell function: from possible mechanism of action to assessment of effectiveness
Crit Rev Microbiol. 2023 Sep 13:1-21. doi: 10.1080/1040841X.2023.2257776. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia because of insulin resistance (IR) and\or pancreatic β-cell dysfunction. Last century research showed that gut microbiota has a direct effect on metabolism and metabolic diseases. New studies into the human microbiome and its connection with the host is making it possible to develop new therapies for a wide variety of diseases. Inflammation is a well-known precursor to metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of hypertension, viscera...

Impact of obesity on female puberty and pubertal disorders
Best Pract Res Clin Obstet Gynaecol. 2023 Aug 10;91:102400. doi: 10.1016/j.bpobgyn.2023.102400. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe worldwide epidemic of obesity appears to be one of the crucial health problems. One-third of children and adolescents in the United States are classified as either overweight or obese and 6% of adolescents are severely obese. With the development of high technology, children, and adolescents, spend more time in sedentary life. Together with the availability of consuming fast caloric food, it is almost unavoidable to get an imbalance between caloric intake and caloric expenditure of energy, resul...

Depressive Symptoms and Blood Pressure in African American Women: A Secondary Analysis From the Intergenerational Impact of Genetic and Psychological Factors on Blood Pressure Study
CONCLUSION: Depressive symptoms were not associated with hypertension prevalence at T4, but they were associated with higher estimated marginal SBP and DBP. Future research is needed to elucidate mechanisms and implications for clinical care and prevention.PMID:37707976 | DOI:10.1097/JCN.0000000000000800

Outcome of obstructed total anamalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) repair patients with milrinone versus milrinone and inhaled nitric oxide (INO): A prospective randomized observational study
CONCLUSION: Most of the patients with obstructed TAPVC had severe PAH. Management of severe PAH with a combination of milrinone with iNO had a better outcome than milrinone alone.PMID:37706383 | DOI:10.4103/aca.aca_56_22

Current and emerging pharmacotherapies for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in infants
Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 14:1-12. doi: 10.1080/14656566.2023.2257598. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a complex condition that encompasses an array of underlying disease processes and affects a diverse population of infants, including those with congenital heart disease, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, persistent PH of the newborn, and those with lung disease such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia. While there are treatments available to adults with PH, limited data exists for infants, especially for the newer medications. Therapies that target the three main pathophysiolog...
