Mental illness and cardiovascular health: observational and polygenic score analyses in a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows widespread associations of (genetic liability to) mental illness (primarily depressive disorder) with CVD, even after confounder adjustment. Future research should focus on clarifying potential causal pathways between mental illness and CVD.PMID:37706306 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291723002635

Male kidney-specific BMAL1 knockout mice are protected from Potassium-deficient, high salt diet-induced blood pressure increases
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00126.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe circadian clock protein BMAL1 is a transcription factor that impacts kidney function, including blood pressure (BP) control. Previously, we showed that male, but not female, kidney-specific cadherin Cre positive BMAL1 knockout mice (KS-BMAL1 KO) exhibit lower BP compared to littermate controls. The goal of this study was to determine the BP phenotype and immune response in male KS-BMAL1 KO in response to a low potassium, high salt diet (LKHS). BP, renal inflammatory markers and immune cells were measured in male mic...

Comparison of hyperoxia or normoxia resolution of intermittent hypoxia and intermittent hyperoxia episodes on liver histopathology, IGF-1, IGFBP-3, and GHBP in neonatal rats
CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to IH or intermittent hyperoxia during the first few weeks of life regardless of resolution in RA or hyperoxia is detrimental to the immature liver. These findings may suggest that interventions to prevent frequent fluctuations in oxygen saturation during early neonatal life remain a high priority.PMID:37708588 | DOI:10.1016/j.ghir.2023.101559

Reporting of blood pressure levels and self-monitoring practices: a survey among outpatients diagnosed with hypertension in Bogot á, Colombia
CONCLUSION: A minority of hypertensive patients seen in Bogotá were aware of their own BP levels. Those in such capacity were in a better social position, more often seen by the same doctor, knew their condition better and handled more complex treatments. Hypertensive patients from Bogotá may benefit from a more continuous medical care, patient education programs and promoting BP home monitoring.PMID:37710151 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02111-8

Impact of obesity on female puberty and pubertal disorders
Best Pract Res Clin Obstet Gynaecol. 2023 Aug 10;91:102400. doi: 10.1016/j.bpobgyn.2023.102400. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe worldwide epidemic of obesity appears to be one of the crucial health problems. One-third of children and adolescents in the United States are classified as either overweight or obese and 6% of adolescents are severely obese. With the development of high technology, children, and adolescents, spend more time in sedentary life. Together with the availability of consuming fast caloric food, it is almost unavoidable to get an imbalance between caloric intake and caloric expenditure of energy, resul...

Extracorporeal Life Support in Pulmonary Hypertension: Practical Aspects
Semin Respir Crit Care Med. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1055/s-0043-1772752. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExtracorporeal life support (ECLS), in particular veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, has emerged as a potentially life-saving treatment modality in patients presenting with pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure refractory to conventional treatment. Used mainly as a bridge to lung transplantation, ECLS is also being used occasionally as a bridge to recovery in patients with treatable causes of right heart failure. This review article describes indications, contraindications, techniques, and outcomes o...

Pulmonary Hypertension Associated with Left Heart Disease
Semin Respir Crit Care Med. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1055/s-0043-1772754. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common complication of diseases affecting the left heart, mostly found in patients suffering from heart failure, with or without preserved left ventricular ejection fraction. Initially driven by a passive increase in left atrial pressure (postcapillary PH), several mechanisms may lead in a subset of patient to significant structural changes of the pulmonary vessels or a precapillary component. In addition, the right ventricle may be independently affected, which results in right ventricular t...

Establishment and Validation of Risk Prediction Model for Postpartum Hemorrhage for Pregnant Women ≥35 Years of Age in Natural Delivery
CONCLUSIONS: The PPH risk-prediction model for vaginal delivery for pregnant women ≥35 years of age showed that a greater age, pregnancy-induced hypertension, a lower prelabor FIB, a longer third stage of labor, and a higher birth weight for the newborn were significantly related to the incidence of PPH and that its use could be clinically helpful.PMID:37708560

Serum branch-chained amino acids are increased in type 2 diabetes and associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
CONCLUSION: Overall, our results indicated that plasma levels of LMWMs measured by 1H-NMR could be potential biomarkers associated with T2D. Moreover, alanine and valine can help in the early detection of the cardiovascular risk associated with this metabolic disease.PMID:37710233 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-023-01958-6

Impaired vascular β-adrenergic relaxation in spontaneously hypertensive rats: The differences between conduit and resistance arteries
In conclusion, attenuated β-adrenergic vasodilatation of conduit arteries of SHR but similar β-adrenergic relaxation of resistance mesenteric arteries from WKY and SHR and their similar BP response to β-adrenergic agonists do not support major role of altered β-adrenergic vasodilatation for high BP in genetic hypertension.PMID:37708986 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2023.176045
