Associations Between Volunteering, STEM Backgrounds, and Information-Processing Skills in Adult Populations of the United States
AbstractVolunteering, STEM education and occupation, and information-processing skills such as literacy, numeracy, and digital problem-solving skills are important indicators of a nation ’s well-being as they represent civic engagement, economic development, and the human capital of the population. Although these critical social indicators have been previously examined in silos, the interrelationships are yet to be examined in the adult populations in the United States. The curren t study analyzed the 2012/2014/2017 U.S. Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) data of adults aged between 25...

Cutting cartel recruitment could be the only way to reduce Mexico ’s violence
For decades, the Mexican government has been fighting a losing war against dozens of cartels involved in drug trading, human trafficking, extortion, and other crimes. Even though thousands of cartel members land in prison each year, cartel-related violence has continued to grow: The number of homicides resulting from the organizations fighting one another—including thousands of innocent bystanders caught in their crossfire each year—tripled between 2006 and 2018. Now, researchers have developed a mathematical model of cartel recruitment and losses that hints at a better way out of this cycle of violence. The study...

Results from Human Clinical Trials Do Not Support Metformin as a Longevity Drug
The SENS Research Foundation staff have carried out the public service of extensively discussing and dismantling the evidence commonly cited in support of metformin as a way to modestly slow aging, showing that said evidence is problematic, to say the least. Metformin might make life modestly better for diabetics, but it doesn't slow aging. This view of the human data matches the poor quality of the animal model data, in which metformin makes a poor showing in comparison to the robust data for a modest slowing of aging that is produced by the use of, say, mTOR inhibitors, or the practice of calorie restriction. Rega...

ALDH2 activation attenuates oxygen –glucose deprivation/reoxygenation-induced cell apoptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis and autophagy
ConclusionsCollectively, our results implied that ALDH2 attenuated OGD/R-induced cell apoptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis and autophagy to promote cell viability in HT22 cells and mouse cortical neurons.

AKAP12 promotes cancer stem cell-like phenotypes and activates STAT3 in colorectal cancer
ConclusionThis study suggests Colorectal CSCs overexpress AKAP12 and maintain stem cell characteristics through the AKAP12/PKC/STAT3 pathway. AKAP12 may be an important therapeutic target for blocking the development of colorectal cancer in the field of cancer stem cells.

MTF1 has the potential as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for gastric cancer and is associated with good prognosis
ConclusionMTF1 is relatively lowly expressed in gastric cancer. MTF1 is also an independent prognostic factor for gastric cancer patients and is associated with good prognosis. It has the potential to be a diagnostic and prognostic marker for gastric cancer.

Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor reduces tumor-associated macrophages and enhances anti-PD-L1-mediated tumor suppression in non-small cell lung cancer
ConclusionsAnagliptin can enhance PD-L1 blockade efficacy in NSCLC by inhibiting macrophage differentiation and M2 macrophage polarization, and combination therapy may be a promising strategy for treating PD-L1 blockade therapy-resistant patients with NSCLC.
