N-doped carbon nanocage-anchored bismuth atoms for efficient CO < sub > 2 < /sub > reduction
Chem Commun (Camb). 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1039/d3cc02806b. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTElectrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) is a prospective but challenging method to decrease the CO2 concentration in the current atmosphere; in particular, the poor selectivity of the target product CO and large overpotentials limit its efficiency. Herein, we propose a top-down route to synthesize Bi single atoms (SAs) anchored by N-doped carbon (NCbox) nanoboxes starting from BiOCl nanoplates as the hard templates. In the CO2RR, the obtained Bi single-atom catalyst possesses remarkably-enhanced catalytic performance, achieving a maximal ...

Silver Nanoparticles as an Intracanal Medicament: A Scoping Review
ScientificWorldJournal. 2023 Sep 11;2023:9451685. doi: 10.1155/2023/9451685. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTSilver nanoparticles (AgNPs) release Ag ions with potent bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effects. They have shown promising results as an intracanal medicament for removing Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), a resistant bacterium associated with root canal failures. This review summarizes the role of AgNPs as an intracanal medicament. Original research articles on AgNPs as an intracanal medicament were searched in databases such as MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, and Embase, resulting in 24 studies. They showed that AgNPs e...

Adsorption performance and kinetics of Cr(VI) onto activated carbons derived from the waste leaves of invasive plants Rhus typhina and Amorpha fruticosa
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29833-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo maximize the potential of biomass from invasive plants, waste leaves from Rhus typhina (RT) and Amorpha fruticosa (AF) were used to prepare activated carbons (ACs) for the efficient removal of chromium from wastewater. Six ACs were prepared by CO2 activation at 850 °C with varying flow rates (500, 1000, and 1500 mL/min) and characterized by yield, pH, N2 adsorption isotherm, FTIR, SEM, TG, and XPS. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics for chromium removal were analyzed. The outcomes showed that the ACs had mesoporous...

PMN-incorporated multifunctional chitosan hydrogel for postoperative synergistic photothermal melanoma therapy and skin regeneration
In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan, oxidized fucoidan and polyphenol-metal nanoparticle (PMN) of tannic acid capped gold nanoparticles were used to fabricate multifunctional nanocomposite hydrogels through Schiff base reaction. The prepared hydrogel demonstrated outstanding photothermal effect, and the controlled high temperature will rapidly kill melanoma cells as well as bacteria within 10 min. Good injectability, self-healing and adhesion combined with high reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capacity, hemostasis and biocompatibility made this hydrogel platform perfect for the treatment of mice melanoma resectio...

Cytocompatibility, antibacterial, and corrosion properties of chitosan/polymethacrylates and chitosan/poly(4-vinylpyridine) smart coatings, electrophoretically deposited on nanosilver-decorated titania nanotubes
This study involved different surface treatments of titanium surface, mainly by electrochemical oxidation to produce a nanotubular oxide layer (TNTs), a subsequent electrochemical reduction of silver nitrate and decoration of a nanotubular surface with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and finally electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of a composite of chitosan (CS) and either polymethacrylate-based copolymer Eudragit E 100 (EE100) or poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) coating. The effects of each stage of this multi-step modification were examined in terms of morphology, roughness, wettability, corrosion resistance, coating-substrate ad...

Cerium oxide nanoparticles in diabetic foot ulcer management: Advances, limitations, and future directions
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2023 Sep 9;231:113535. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2023.113535. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is one of the most serious complications of diabetes, potentially resulting in wound infection and amputation under severe circumstances. Oxidative stress and dysbiosis are the primary factors that delay wound healing, posing challenges to effective treatment. Unfortunately, conventional approaches in these aspects have proven satisfactory in achieving curative outcomes. Recent research has increasingly focused on using nanoparticles, leveraging their potential in wound dressing...

Assessment of the Alga < em > Cladophora glomerata < /em > as a Source for Cellulose Nanocrystals
Biomacromolecules. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c00380. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNanocellulose is isolated from cellulosic fibers and exhibits many properties that macroscale cellulose lacks. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a subcategory of nanocellulose made of stiff, rodlike, and highly crystalline nanoparticles. Algae of the order Cladophorales are the source of the longest cellulosic nanocrystals, but manufacturing these CNCs is not well-studied. So far, most publications have focused on the applications of this material, with the basic manufacturing parameters and material properties receiving little a...
