Multi-level biological responses of Daphnia magna exposed to settleable atmospheric particulate matter from metallurgical industries
Aquat Toxicol. 2023 Sep 9;263:106692. doi: 10.1016/j.aquatox.2023.106692. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetallurgical industries are a continuous source of air pollution due to the amount of settleable particulate matter (SePM) they release. This SePM is a complex mixture formed by metallic nanoparticles and metals, which reach terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and can be a significant source of contamination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adverse effects of SePM at different levels of biological organization in order to estimate its ecological impacts on aquatic ecosystems. For this purpose, the crustacean Da...

Efficient TNBC immunotherapy by dual reprogramming tumor-infiltrating dendritic cells and tumor-associated macrophages with stimulus-responsive miR155 nanocomplexes
In this study, pH/ROS-responsive microRNA-155 (miR155) nanocomplexes (MiR@PCPmP NPs) were developed to reprogram TIDCs and TAMs for efficient TNBC immunotherapy. This nanoplatform was based on a pH/ROS cleavable copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol)-carboxydimethyl maleate-poly(ethyleneimine)-peroxalate ester-poly(ε-caprolactone) grafted with mannose moieties (PEG-CDM-PEI[Man]-ox-PCL) which self-assembled with miRNA to form nanocomplexes. In the tumor microenvironment, the nanocomplexes showed selective cellular uptake by TIDCs and TAMs through PEG detachment and mannose exposure, followed by efficient endosomal escape, cyto...

Rotenone nanoparticles based on mesoporous silica to improve the stability, translocation and insecticidal activity of rotenone
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29842-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNanotechnology has been widely applied for pesticide carriers, which is an important way to improve the utilization, stability, and sustained release of pesticides. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are a nanomaterial with adjustable particle and pore sizes, with a high specific surface area and good biocompatibility. Rotenone is a non-systemic botanical insecticide that is easily degraded in the environment. We used a modified soft-template method to prepare MSNs, in which rotenone was loaded using the solvent evap...

Spinel ferrite nanoparticles as potential materials in chlorophenol removal from wastewater
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29809-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPersistent organic pollutants (POPs) including chlorophenols (CPs) are increasing in water effluents, creating serious problems for both aquatic and terrestrial lives. Several research attempts have considered the removal of CPs by functionalised nanomaterials as adsorbents and catalysts. Besides the unique crystal structure, spinel ferrite nanomaterials (SFNs) own interesting optical and magnetic properties that give them the potential to be utilised in the removal of different types of CPs. In this review, we highlight...

SERS-substrates based on ZnO nanoflowers prepared by green synthesis
Anal Biochem. 2023 Sep 16;681:115328. doi: 10.1016/j.ab.2023.115328. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with a flower-like morphology, synthesized by an affordable colloidal route using an aqueous fungi extract of Ganoderma lucidum as a reducing agent and stabilizer, are investigated as SERS-substrate. Each "flower" has large effective surface that is preserved at packing particles into a dense film and thus exhibits an advantageous property for SERS and similar sensing applications. The mycoextract used in our low-cost and green synthesis as surface stabilizer allows subsequent deposition of metal NPs o...

Folate conjugated nanomedicines for selective inhibition of mTOR signaling in polycystic kidneys at clinically relevant doses
Biomaterials. 2023 Sep 13;302:122329. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2023.122329. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough rapamycin is a very effective drug for rodents with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), it is not encouraging in the clinical trials due to the suboptimal dosages compelled by the off-target side effects. We here report the generation, characterization, specificity, functionality, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and toxicology profiles of novel polycystic kidney-specific-targeting nanoparticles (NPs). We formulated folate-conjugated PLGA-PEG NPs, which can be loaded with multiple drugs, including rapamycin (a...

PNIPAM-stabilized cubosomes as fusogenic delivery nanovectors for anticancer applications
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2023 Sep 9;231:113532. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2023.113532. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn recent years, lipid cubic nanoparticles have emerged as promising nanocarriers for drug delivery, due to the several advantages they exhibit with respect to other lipid systems. Here, we report on lipid cubic nanoparticles stabilized by PNIPAM-based amphiphilic block copolymers, specifically, poly(N, N-dimethylacrylamide)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PDMA-b-PNIPAM), as a new class of drug delivery systems (DDS). In vitro studies on the internalization efficiency of the DDS towards two types of h...

Chem Asian J. 2023 Sep 18:e202300537. doi: 10.1002/asia.202300537. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerein, the synthesis of a novel composite photocatalyst, Co/CoO@Fe2 V4 O13 , is reported by the deposition of CoO metal oxide nanoparticles on the surface of Fe2 V4 O13 bimetallic oxide. The synthesised photocatalyst exhibited a band gap of roughly 1.8 eV, rendering it responsive to the complete visible light spectrum of the sun, thereby enabling optimal absorption of solar radiation. The Co/CoO@Fe2 V4 O13 composites demonstrated an enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation capacity compared to pristine Fe2 V4 O13 when exp...
