Sympathetic nerves suppress T-cell responses in infection and in cancer
Nature, Published online: 20 September 2023; doi:10.1038/d41586-023-02776-2T cells that are chronically stimulated in viral infection or cancer enter a dysfunctional state known as T-cell exhaustion. Sympathetic nerves in tissues and tumours drive T-cell exhaustion through the action of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline on the β1-adrenergic receptors of T cells, with implications for cancer treatment.

Management of paediatric benign bone tumour
Primary tumours of bone are a diverse group of lesions that range from benign to malignant neoplasms. While primary benign bone tumours are more prevalent than malignancies in children malignant bone tumours are the seventh most common type of malignancies in children, accounting for roughly 3% –5% of cancers between the ages of 0 and 14 years. Whilst certain aspects of benign bone tumours can be challenging to diagnose and differentiate recent research employing advanced molecular and genetic methodologies has expanded our understanding.

The Vital Role of the Endoscopic Oncologist
In 1993, I was recruited to be the Head of Gastrointestinal Oncology at the University of California, Irvine within our new NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Prior to accepting this position, I interviewed a few prominent figures who worked in this unique space where gastrointestinal (GI) intersects with Oncology —and I came to the conclusion that this was indeed an area of clinically unmet needs. This was further confirmed by my father’s diagnosis of locally advanced colon cancer and the journey we would travel together as a family.

Predictive factors and prognosis of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in gastric cancer: A large population-based study (UGIB-GC trial)
This study aimed to identify risk factors and overall survival rates of bleeding gastric cancer patients. MethodsThis retrospective cohort study was conducted between 2007 –2022 at tertiary care center in Thailand. Clinical information, endoscopic findings and histological type were extensively reviewed and were compared between bleeders and non-bleeders. Patients were monitored for at least 5 years. ResultsThere were 20,981 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy during study period. Total of 201 gastric cancer patients were included in this study, 21 were excluded due to incomplete medical records. 180 ...

Comparing the accuracy of positive and negative indocyanine green staining in guiding laparoscopic anatomical liver resection: protocol for a randomised controlled trial
Introduction Knowledge of the clinical liver anatomy has evolved with advanced imaging modalities and laparoscopic surgery. Therefore, precise anatomical resection knowledge has become the standard treatment for primary and secondary liver cancer. Segmentectomy, a parenchymal-preserving approach, is regarded as an option for anatomical resections in patients with impaired liver. Indocyanine green (ICG) staining is a promising method for understanding the anatomical borders of the liver segments. There are two methods of ICG staining (positive and negative), and the superiority of either approach has not been determined to ...

Increased rates of chronic physical health conditions across all organ systems in autistic adolescents and adults
ConclusionsThis study provides evidence of widespread, physical health comorbidity that spans nearly all major organ systems in autistic adults compared to non-autistic adults, using both binary logistic regression and network models. Healthcare professionals must be made aware of the range of co-occurring physical health conditions that may be more common among autistic people. However, our findings also point towards potential avenues requiring further exploration, such as the association of autism with both Coeliac ’s disease and EDS.

Heterogeneity of the tumor immune microenvironment and clinical interventions
AbstractThe tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) is broadly composed of various immune cells, and its heterogeneity is characterized by both immune cells and stromal cells. During the course of tumor formation and progression and anti-tumor treatment, the composition of the TIME becomes heterogeneous. Such immunological heterogeneity is not only present between populations but also exists on temporal and spatial scales. Owing to the existence of TIME, clinical outcomes can differ when a similar treatment strategy is provided to patients. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment of TIME heterogeneity is essential for developin...

Real ‐world experience of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in children, adolescents and adults with relapsed or refractory bone tumours: A Canadian Sarcoma Research and Clinical Collaboration (CanSaRCC) study
ConclusionOur real-world data show that TKIs have meaningful activity in recurrent BT with acceptable toxicities when started at modified dosing. Inclusion of TKIs in earlier lines of treatment and/or maintenance therapy could be questions for future research.

An effective disease diagnostic model related to pyroptosis in ischemic cardiomyopathy
J Cell Mol Med. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1111/jcmm.17957. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPyroptosis is involved in ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM). The study aimed to investigate the pyroptosis-related genes and clarify their diagnostic value in ICM. The bioinformatics method identified the differential pyroptosis genes between the normal control and ICM samples from online datasets. Then, protein-protein interaction (PPI) and function analysis were carried out to explore the function of these genes. Following, subtype analysis was performed using ConsensusClusterPlus, functions, immune score, stromal score, immune cell proportio...

Interactive effects of CDKN2B-AS1 gene polymorphism and habitual risk factors on oral cancer
J Cell Mol Med. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1111/jcmm.17966. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common malignant disease associated with a high mortality rate and heterogeneous disease aetiology. Cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 2B antisense RNA 1 (CDKN2B-AS1), is a long noncoding RNA that has been shown to act as a scaffold, sponge, or signal hub to promote carcinogenesis. Here, we attempted to assess the effect of CDKN2B-AS1 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the susceptibility to OSCC. Five CDKN2B-AS1 SNPs, including rs564398, rs1333048, rs1537373, rs2151280 and rs8181047, were analy...
