Gastric schwannoma diagnosing gastric stromal tumor
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.17235/reed.2023.9919/2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 45-year-old male visited our hospital for a medical examination without any clinical complaints. The patient had an gastroscopy, which revealed a 30mm*30mm hemispherical submucosal tumor arising from the lesser curvature of the gastric body , suggesting a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) as a preoperative diagnosis;Endoscopic resection was determined to be the best choice and the patient underwent a endoscopic full-thickness resection and endoscopic purse-string suture. Except for a slight low fever, the patient was wel...

An unusual cause of abdominal pain in an older woman
We report an elderly woman who was diagnosed as toothpick penetrated the jejunal wall and successfully retrieval under DBE. To our best knowledge, there is currently only one report of removing toothpick from the small intestine using DBE. We figured that DBE is a feasible, safe, and effective treatment when toothpicks penetrate the small intestinal wall without other adverse events based on our presentation.PMID:37732347 | DOI:10.17235/reed.2023.9898/2023

Traumatic sigmoid colon rupture due to breast cancer metastasis: a case report
Clin J Gastroenterol. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s12328-023-01859-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe metastasis of breast cancer to the gastrointestinal tract is rare. Herein, we presented the case of an 85-year-old woman who had a history of invasive lobular carcinoma and experienced complete colon rupture due to relatively low-energy trauma. The patient underwent bilateral total mastectomy and axillary dissection following preoperative chemotherapy 6 years ago. She had a local recurrence 2 years after the surgery and underwent chemotherapy. Subsequently, the cancer metastasized to the thoracolumbar area and retroperiton...

Successful endoscopic hemostatic treatment for endotracheal bleeding
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.17235/reed.2023.9821/2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 42-year-old male patient experienced hemorrhagic shock after endotracheal intubation. Emergency gastroscopy showed no upper gastrointestinal bleeding, but active tracheal bleeding. After sedation, the tracheal bleeding was successfully stopped with gastroscopy. Post-intubation airway bleeding is a rare but fatal adverse event, and finding the exact bleeding site and quickly stopping the bleeding is the key to successful treatment.PMID:37732344 | DOI:10.17235/reed.2023.9821/2023

Coexistence of small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumor, small bowel adenocarcinoma, and ganglioneuroma in a patient with neurofibromatosis type I and caused intussusception
We report a synchronous case of small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumor, small bowel adenocarcinoma, and ganglioneuroma complicated by intussusception in an old woman with NF-I. The patient presented with a 2-month history of abdominal pain and multiple neurofibromas and café au lait macules was found all over the patient's body. The enhanced computed tomography revealed a terminal ileal tumor which was significantly enhanced with secondary intussusception. The tumor of the ileum was considered to be NF-I-associated intestinal neurofibroma.Postoperative pathology and immunohistochemistry showed that the terminal ileoce...

A Review on the Antimutagenic and Anticancer Effects of Cysteamine
In conclusion, regarding the high safety profile of cysteamine and the current literature data presented in this article, cysteamine might be considered as an interesting molecule for the prevention and the treatment of cancer. Further clinical studies should be performed to support these data in humans.PMID:37731680 | PMC:PMC10508993 | DOI:10.1155/2023/2419444

Oestrogen receptor-independent actions of oestrogen in cancer
Mol Biol Rep. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1007/s11033-023-08793-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOestrogen, the primary female sex hormone, plays a significant role in tumourigenesis. The major pathway for oestrogen is via binding to its receptor [oestrogen receptor (ERα or β)], followed by nuclear translocation and transcriptional regulation of target genes. Almost 70% of breast tumours are ER + , and endocrine therapies with selective ER modulators (tamoxifen) have been successfully applied. As many as 25% of tamoxifen-treated patients experience disease relapse within 5 years upon completion of chemotherapy. In such cases, t...

Effect of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation on Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction after abdominal operation
Background: Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction is one of the most common complications in patients undergoing abdominal general anesthesia. The incidence of PGD in patients undergoing abdominal surgery is 10% to 30%. PGD patients have a long hospital stay, heavy economic burden, high risk of infection and other complications. Maintaining normal gastrointestinal function is considered an important part of ERAS after abdominal surgery, reducing the pain of surgery, preventing organ dysfunction and complications, and speeding recovery.

Enteral tube feeding in functional gastrointestinal disorders: A game of chance?
We conducted a retrospective study on a random sample of inpatients (n=15) with Disorders of Gut Brain Interactions (DGBIs) who presented to our tertiary care Neurogastroenterology service between June 2015 and June 2018. All inpatients presented with refractory severe gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms leading to excessive food restriction, met criteria for malnutrition and were commenced and discharged on enteral tube feeding (ETF). All data was obtained from medical records, then descriptively and statistically analysed.

A service review of the long-term nutritional complications after admission for severe acute pancreatitis
Acute pancreatitis is the most common acute gastrointestinal disease requiring hospitalisation. Severe Acute Pancreatitis (SAP), is defined by persistent organ failure beyond 48 hours or with local or regional complications1. Patients often experience weight loss, exocrine and endocrine insufficiency which may persist beyond hospital admission. Biochemical markers may become deranged secondary to pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI). Clinical guidelines in acute pancreatitis lack recommendations regarding long-term nutritional monitoring2.

Identifying Malnutrition in Emergency General Surgery
Emergency general surgery (EGS) is a surgical subspecialty whereby patients can require complex care for an acutely dysfunctional gastrointestinal tract including perforation and obstruction. Surgery is a key part of treatment, with resultant catabolic stress and frequent need for nutritional support.

Improved Post Operative Outcomes with ERAS protocol in the Pediatric Ambulatory Surgical Population
Background: Currently, there are no enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols standardized in the pediatric population. An international study showed that children undergoing gastrointestinal surgery with ERAS protocols have improved bowel function recovery time, duration of postoperative hospital stay, and lower hospital costs.1 Few studies exist that establish the best practices in pediatric surgery; however, some cite the use of IV acetaminophen, regional anesthesia, multidisciplinary communication, tailored post op nausea and vomiting therapy, prevention of hypothermia, and early initiation of ad libitum feeds a...
