The role of bacteriophages in shaping bacterial composition and diversity in the human gut
The microbiota of the gut has continued to co-evolve alongside their human hosts conferring considerable health benefits including the production of nutrients, drug metabolism, modulation of the immune system, and playing an antagonistic role against pathogen invasion of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The gut is said to provide a habitat for diverse groups of microorganisms where they all co-habit and interact with one another and with the immune system of humans. Phages are bacterial parasites that require the host metabolic system to replicate via the lytic or lysogenic cycle. The phage and bacterial populations are r...

Plateau pika fecal microbiota transplantation ameliorates inflammatory bowel disease manifestations in a mouse model of colitis
In conclusion, Plateau pika feces was found to protect mice against colitis induced by dextran sodium sulfate by reducing inflammation and regulating microbial dysbiosis. These findings suggest the potential of Plateau pika feces as an alternative therapy for IBD.

Nomogram to predict feeding intolerance in critically ill children
Conclusion: The nomogram was verified to have a good prediction performance based on discrimination, calibration, and clinical decision analysis. What is Known:• Research has demonstrated that gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction is not only a fundamental element of Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS), but also the initiator of MODS.• Previous study has demonstrated a significant association between FI and poor prognosis in critically ill patients. What is New:• We excluded patients with primary gastrointestinal tract disease from our study, and we observed an incidence of FI of 25.2% in the Pediatric Intensive Car...

Ultrathin endoscope equipped with ultrasonic miniprobe for upper gastrointestinal ultrasonography in a porcine model
Ultrathin esophagogastroduodenoscopy (UT-EGD) is an ideal tool for unsedated upper gastrointestinal examination and pediatric gastroenterology but is rarely competent for endoscopic ultrasonography mini probe (EUS-MP). We developed a UT-EGD ultrasonography method(UT-EUS) and verified its clinical application value through animal experiments.

Perioperative and Oncological Outcomes of Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Peritoneal Metastasis of Rectal Origin
ConclusionsPatients with rectal carcinoma undergoing CRS/HIPEC for peritoneal metastasis had worse peri-operative and oncological outcomes. Overall survival was excellent in both groups. This data may be used for risk stratification when considering CRS/HIPEC for patients with rectal primary.

Extracellular matrix-induced signaling pathways in mesenchymal stem/stromal cells
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a crucial component of the stem cell microenvironment, or stem-cell niches, and contributes to the regulation of cell behavior and fate. Accumulating evidence indicates that d...

First randomised controlled study of two different approaches to treating retinoblastoma
Ninety nine percent of retinoblastomas occur in children less than 5 years and is the most common intraocular tumour. Archivist was fascinated to discover that most of today’s treatments for this tumour (unlike many other oncological tumours in children) have been implemented based on single-centre experiences in high-income countries and not the large randomised controlled trials (RCTs) from many centres that we know well from the large cancer networks. There is also an inequality in treatment when comparing to low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC) where there may be delayed diagnosis, difficulties in accept...

Care from Birth to Discharge of Infants Born at 22 to 23 Weeks ’ Gestation
We describe the approach taken at the University of Iowa Stead Family Child ren's Hospital neonatal intensive care unit with respect to preterm infants born at 22 weeks’ gestation. We have chosen to present our standardize care plan with respect to prenatal, neurologic, nutritional, gastrointestinal, and skin management. Respiratory and cardiopulmonary care will be briefl y reviewed, as these strategies have been published previously.

Hypericum sampsonii Hance: a review of its botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, biological activity, and safety
Conclusion: Collectively, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and safety of H. sampsonii, a valuable medicinal plant in China with various pharmacological activities. Based on pharmacological studies, H. sampsonii shows potential for treating gastrointestinal and gynecological disorders as well as traumatic injuries, which aligns with traditional medicinal use due to the presence of PPAPs, benzophenones, xanthones, and flavonoids. Therefore, further studies are needed to evaluate the pharmacological effects and elucidate the pharmacological mechanisms...

Report and follow-up on two new patients with congenital mesoblastic nephroma
ConclusionsThe finding of a fetal abdominal mass should prompt suspicion of CMN, especially if it is associated with polyhydramnios; it should also alert obstetricians and neonatologists to the risk of preterm delivery. Although being a usually benign condition, CMN may be associated with neonatal systemic-metabolic or postoperative complications. High-level surgical expertise, careful neonatological intensive care and histopathological/cytogenetic-molecular definition are the cornerstones for the optimal management of patients. This should also include an individualized follow-up, oriented to the early detection of any po...
